Dynamic duo: Henderson & Fabinho

I almost never post fail comps as they can be misleading or mean. But in this case I will, as much as I hate to do it for a player I like. The signs of a physical decline were already present last season; I remember a game against City in particular (I think at home) where he was bypassed time and time again – but then it seemed like an outlier. Be warned, this is painful to watch:

Oh man. Someone who's sent out for lunch that often will never be hungry again.

If we were a well-run club we'd give him till the end of the season to recover his form, with a view to selling him in the summer if he hasn't.

Yeah, he has to be moved on in the summer. Clearly not up to it in this league anymore. 180k per week salary mean we'll be paying part of it for a while (3 years left on his current deal). Hopefully a decent team in France, Spain or Italy sees value in him and can afford most of his wages.

We're not getting more than 15-20 mill I reckon.

There is potentially a good CB in Fabinho though if it’s purely a legs problem. But if he’s going to be throwing in tackles like he did on Sunday there’s no place in defence either.

Someone needs to put an arm around him and Henderson and whisper to them a la Ronaldo that if things don't improve it might be better for them to find a new team at lower wages if necessary, or risk being kept out of the squad for the rest of their careers and potentially deregistered for the League and UCL.

Just cook up a story about how much they've always wanted to play for Juventus or something, save everyone some face...

[article]As you can see from the image above, the league's leaders have improved massively in their midfield progressive stats by taking their pass accuracy from 51% in the 2021/2022 season to 60% – that's an astounding increase of 9 percentage points, which places them at the top of ranking for this metric, and two percentage points above Man City (with a 58% success rate).

On the other hand, Liverpool have decreased their success rate in progressive passes by seven and five percentage points in the pitch's midfield and attacking areas, respectively.

Another key thing to note here is that Brighton have the third-highest overall progressive pass success rate in the league, just behind Arsenal and City – with De Zerbi's men improving significantly in their defensive progression accuracy stats by +10 percentage points![/article]

What happened to him though? He wasn't injured or anything since last season but the drop off is startling.

It's mind boggling.
Fernandinho was fine until he was 59 ... and his heir apparent at DM is finished at 29.

Not quite the same type of player… funnily Fernandinho was more of a runner then a take up the right positions kinda guy.

What about Arsenal’s Gilberto Silva - I think he was still good at 31-32. Lots of defensively-minded Brazilians stay at the top level well into their late 30’s: Thiago Silva, Dani Alves, Lucio, Fernandinho, Cafu etc. Fading early is more common with attackers, particularly those living a party lifestyle - Fabinho being a quiet family man and a good professional seemed a safe bet from something like that happening.

And yet… Was there some kind of injury we don’t know about (or one described as “minor,” that had long-term consequences of some sort)? That’s the only explanation I can think of.

He was offered a 5 year contract when he was 27-28, at the top of his game. Defensive midfielders stay on top well in their early 30s, and he could play a number of positions so it was a logical contract to give out. Can't really fault the club on this.

I can't recall another player who had such a huge drop-off in performance at 29. He was one of our best players and now he's a liability.

He had his first child in Dec 2022.

He's playing like a man whose focus has been elsewhere.

Perhaps a pregnant wife (and then first born child) would do that?
