Fuck, I can't stand much more of him running into space then cutting back and passing sideways. He's the most boring, predictable, gutless "proper winger" ever. It's clear that whereas he's previously played in counter-attacking teams where he's more often received the ball running 30 yards into space on a break (Villa, Boro), he's now struggling hugely to play in a side where he more often needs a trick and the confidence/ability to regularly beat his man and whip in a cross/drive into the box.

He's like sandwiches with the crust cut off. All neat and tidy but leaving you feeling unsatisfied and hungry.

I just can't see him getting any better.
 
If i had it my way he'd be the first out the exit door come the summer.

I've given up on him.

I'm fed up with him.

He needs confidence but he's not willing to gamble enough to get confidence back. But he won't gamble because he has no confidence.

He's in a catch 22 and because of that he's fucked.
 
I defended the signing for a while, but it's awfully worrying.

Again, if he'd have scored that one when he ran from his own half and hit the bar on his debut, who knows.

Alas, he didn't.

Best we can hope for might be a MON 8m bid in the summer.

I'm not usually one for giving up on players after 6 months but I just cannot see where the improvement will come from. I was hopeful in the summer that he'd thrive at a big club but the step up has only served to throw into acute highlight his limitations.

He does everything "quite well" but is nowhere near approaching "excellent" at anything.

The ultimate "meh" winger at a big club.

What he infuriates me the most about him is that he has no heart.

He could learn a thing or off spearing, another limited player who at least is willing to try things (mostly without success!)

We were completely mental for paying big money for him.

Last season he was pretty decent, but the season before? 0 goals, 1 assist.

Here's how it goes.

A target surfaces in the media. We all groan - surely it can't be true, no we don't want him. Then we start to get used to the idea - because we have to - we start to think, well he is "premiership proven", and face it we are ridiculously loyal. We think, maybe we were wrong, maybe he can step up? And then we realize, no - he can't and we were right to groan.

Time to cut our losses with Downing. Sell, and move on.
 
I'd be very disappointed if he was with us next year. He is really average. Well, that's a compliment. He's below average. Horrifiying signing.

He's getting a free ride from the press too because he's English.
If we spent 20 million on a foreigner and he performed like Downing the knives would have been out long ago.

Not true. He's getting a free ride because Carroll has been shit and cost more. If Carroll kicks on from his current "run of form" then the magnifying glass will inevitably fall on Downing.

I still think he is a good player.
