Like every other English journo who has tried to write about sabremetrics the article above fails to make the point that not all stats have value. The games played one has value, the most crosses one doesnt tell us much though - that was the stat used to highlight why we bought Pennant.

And how many of his assists came from crosses?

How is that downings fault? If the front men can't head it in
[/quote]
that's my thinking as well
nani - aims for berbatosh
downing - aims for heskey
you can see why one has 14 assists and the other has 7
Is it succesful cross if it clips the top of a guys head, or if it misses everyone in the box and lands at a guys feet standing on the sideline. A successful cross is not necessarily a good one.

Most prolific Premiership crosser to the Premiership's best header of a ball.
It sounds very simple.
I hope it is.

what's pleasing is downing can also cross right footed so if he isn't getting any joy out of the right fullback he can switch over to the right and have a go at the left fullback.

If I had Carew to aim crosses to, I'm pretty sure I would be high up the list of players with a most successful cross rate.
S'pose he's got Carroll to launch them at now, but it's by no means a persuasive stat.

Carew was on loan at Stoke wasn't he? At least for half a season
He delivered some very good crosses for Carew, and now he will do the same for Carroll. Watching the game today its obvious that we need a left winger. We are currently getting maybe 40 % of what Carroll is capable of. Not once did we hit a cross he coukd attack.
Weird fact from a Villa fan, apparantly Downing is able to run backwards very fast and it's kind of a joke in training where he races against some of the slower or less fit players (with him running backwards) and sometimes he even wins. I assume it's only over 50 metres or less.
Anyone else heard this? It was a feature in one of their match day programmes at Villa Park last year appaz.
Running backwards quickly is a very good attribute to have as a footy player. Running forwards quickly is a pretty good attribute to have as well though, but then i don't think downing is anywhere near as slow as most do.

Hahaha Big L's on form tonight
I don't want us to spend 20 mill on Downing but if he's the player Kenny wants then fair enough, I think teams will hold us over a barrel because they know we have the money and if we want a particular player then we have to pay the asking price as was the case with Carroll
