Downing

I think the only logical way to conclude this thread is to say anyone who opposes the signing of Downing is wrong and probably interferes with children.

Now that we've got Downing, it's going to be interesting to see who we go after for the left wing.

Ive been reading these forums for a while now so i thought i would get involved 🙂 as a first time poster i have to say signing downing is really starting to grow on me. He would give us that much needed width weve been crying out for, and him whipping balls in the box onto carroll`s head makes me look forward to the new season even more. I hope and pray we get mata aswell though because i thought last season we lacked that creative in the hole type of player that could open things up and make things happen when trying to break teams down, a bit like silva for man city. I cant see him coming personally, especially if downing comes in, fingers crossed tho 🙂

You're right Molby, the views are polarised.

Downing is what he is and personally I do think it is questionable that he is better than what we already have

Really? What, not better than Maxi or Joe Cole? Cos that's about all we've got, they've got about half a dozen good games between them in a Liverpool shirt. Both are inconsistent and the end product poor too often, and for all of our loathing of statistics, I'd wager Downings are alot more appealing. He's a good consistent performer who's comfortable with both feet and on both sides of the pitch.

And Ross:

Realistically he's a replacement for Maxi, but he's not going to produce much more than Maxi - he'll do it differently, but it will amount to around the same thing. I would have preferred to stick it out with Maxi for another season

I find it a bit rich that you guys are advocating Maxi as an arguably better player, based on a few games of good form from 18 months of football (while you both wax lyrical about us needing consistent quality), when Downing has just been Villa's player of the year and is up there in the goals and assists charts from midfield and is a proven consistent performer.

Mark
I would argue that an on form maxi, such as during his purple patch last season is the better footballer out of the two, as for his consistency yes its a fair point but i have always been a supporter of his. Bottom line is for the thick end of twenty million quid there should be a marked improvement to the first eleven or at least the prospect of a marked improvement after a few years of development such as in the case of a young player. Downing simply does not represent a 20M pound step up in quality to the team as is. IMO it's the consistency of Downing which is his main downfall, he will never be any better than he already is and will not be a new exciting 20M boost to our attacking prowess, he is consistently Downing he is just average.

FWIW I will be surprised if we do go ahead at such a fee, i'm sure from the enduring gossip that Kenny probably does want him but .... surely not for 18, 19, 20M or so, even you Downing fans would not argue that that is good business.

Shut up, if we bought a young shiny new LW we'd be stunting the growth of our best youth player, Downing was bought to transition us between having no winger at all until Sterling is the next Messi. And he provides everything you need from a winger when you have Suarez and Carroll in your team. Thank you very much, go home.

Is the right answer.

Also Downing will retain possession, deliver accurate crosses from wide, be able to beat most fullbacks in order to deliver a cross, work hard for the team and provide a reasonable goals from either side. Mata could provide more in total especially in creativity, but he is more risky as he isn't proven in a physical league. I want Mata also and maybe even personally I'm pretty confident he would justify the price tag but I completely understand the Downing deal in preference. And I also still think both are possible because both Mata and Downing can play on both sides with Mata being very good on the right. If we sell one for Aqua or Raul and sell a few from the reject pool we can justify the additional outlay,

So we're paying 20M for a stop gap.

Woohoo.

I still reminisce about the days I would stuff nicked Aztecs in my school shorts pockets ..... those were the days and Aztecs the best chocolate bars Cadbury's ever produced. Criminal they only had a short run.

Ross, you waxed lyrical about FSG & how they'd use stats to buy players like they had done in baseball & how good they were at using those stats.

Now they've decided on Downing you're unhappy with their decision. Surely they're using the techniques you yourself advocated. You recently linked a foreword that said overpaying for players makes sense in some circumstance. One would assume FSG would know when that was better than you?
[/quote]

I've outlined when it makes sense to overpay, it doesn't make sense now.

And FSG have made mistakes too - this is another.

Downing for 20m

No thanks.

I'd rather pay an extra 10-15 and great an exceptional player in.

Like who?

Haha... I'm surprised in such a long thread no one else has really picked up on this, he's versatile enough, what are the odds? It would be typical us, we wait ages for a left winger and then spend £20m to play one on the right wing.

Its just shite not correct comment from him though, as he played mainly on the left this season. Albrighton played 29 premier league games ffs.
Ryan just want to stir this even more...
