Downing

Henderson was £16M.

And the reason we're paying over the odds for Downing is because he's English, Villa have already lost a first choice winger already, and because of his contract.

We can't blame City for this, nor can we convince ourselves that there are no alternatives to Stuart Downing, priced at £20M, because it's ridiculous.

We paid 13 for Henderson. Regarding the Downing fee, hopefully its a bit under 20 mill. But what can you do when City have started this inflated transfer fees trend. And for all those against us signing Downing, who would you sign? That can play left wing and has the same qualites and would be interested in joining. Who?
[/quote]

If we sign him, by the end of the season those against the signing will have some serious egg on their faces and I'll bump this thread. Downing is a quality player with end product. Perhaps if he did some superfluous step overs, people would be more excited. He scored something like 9 goals and had 5 assists in a crappy Villa team, overshadowing Young. KK knows a good player when he sees one and knows how to build League winning teams lets trust him on this

In recent seasons we've lost mascher & alonso without adequately replacing them.

We've had owners who've driven us to the brink of bankruptcy.

Last season we bought poulsen & knockesky who were overpriced.

Now we're bitching about overpaying for quality players by a few million cos the manager wants them.

I know what I prefer.

Nobody.

Absolutely nobody else is left footed, paceless, trickless and can hit a decent cross.

Ha ha....if the rumor is true (still hoping it isn't), i hope he does well!

Highly doubt that.

I reckon that's our midfield sorted if we sign Downing. Just need to offload a few in that area - Poulsen, Cole, Jova and El Zhar hopefully and there's still question marks over Meireles' and Aquilani's future.

Henderson was 13 mill + 3 mill add ons. Confirmed by Comolli.
So you dont want us to improve then Ross? Continue with the same players we had for LW last season? Or are you just arguing for fun without having a clue about what other targets we can get? Do you know who has hit the most accurete crosses in total over the last 3 seasons? Downing. Not to bad when you're *shite* that..

Mentioning stats to Rosco, that's Immortal Sin that is..

I wouldn't be too quick to write off Joe Cole. He had a poor first season, but it sometimes happens that players don't come good straight away. I think he may just need a decent run of games to get match fit.

Hahaha, yeah I know mate. Good stat though..

Yes, signing Downing is preferable to losing Mascherano and Alonso. I'll concede that.

I love this logic, because I want to wait for good players to be available at sensible prices I must not want us to improve. I do want us to improve Hansern - I just don't want us to repeat the mistakes of years gone by when we've settled for average players and usually overspent on them so when better players become available all our money is spent and we're left moaning about not having ambition and all that other nonsense people talk about.

I happen to think Downing is decent and would add something to the side, just not enough to warrant a 20m pound transfer. Realistically he's a replacement for Maxi, but he's not going to produce much more than Maxi - he'll do it differently, but it will amount to around the same thing. I would have preferred to stick it out with Maxi for another season, or maybe pick up a cheap short term deal rather than handicap us for the future by committing about 35m+ to a deal for Downing. If our aim is to make the CL, it's all we'll ever get as we've found out for the last decade. If we have real conviction about our goals and what we do we can win the league. I'd prefer us to do that. The notion of there being a gradual way to do it is nonsense, by the time we're a settled CL regular again the players that got us there will need replacing because a lot of them will be past it, not good enough for a title winning team etc. So we need a massive outlay to improve again, which will probably be beyond us. I'll repeat what I said before, because of the natural improvement that is possible from the squad we have, we should be looking to add players who will be good enough for a spot in a title winning team, not next season but the season after that and for the few years after it. I don't think Downing will be up to that level at that time so I'd be happy to pass on him at 20m and exercise some restraint.

I am shocked at the deal, I really thought having Comolli would prevent this type of wastefulness. It's not fun watching a team with fuck up consistently when you can see it coming a mile off.

Re - the stats - how is an accurate cross measured ? I presume it takes a teammate to get on the end of it. Does it have to give them a chance on goal or is any touch by a player enough ? Are we sure that it's an indicator of good crossing ability or do Villa flood the box with players. Did they have players who were unusually good in the air ? etc etc. Don't take stats like that at face value.

And really if he's been so good for three years I'd be worried. I always think players like Downing have a three year window usually around mid to late twenties where they perform best. If Downing has just had those three years this deal gets worse. I don't think that's the case though I think he'll be slightly above average until he's 29/30.

The mistakes we've made is not signing the managers top target, and getting nr 2 or nr 3 instead. This is Kennys first choice for the left wing. He's the type of player Kenny wants thst can get this team to win some thropies. And if we do just that, I couldnt care less if we paid 12 or 19 mill for him. Even if he can contribute to a top 4 spot the fee doesnt matter.

Why bring in yet another short term option? And Maxi bar a 5-7 game spell was very average. Not having some ewith a left peg on the left side is hampering a lot of our attacking play. So we stick it out with Maxi for another year, miss out on CL and we're exactlt were we where... But with one more year gone and more ground to make up towards the top 4. Doesnt make sense mate.

Downing was one of the best wingers in the Premiership las season, but yet you still call him average. That baffeles me, and he seems to only get better with age. So we'll get the best years out of him as he now will hit his peek.

Ross, you waxed lyrical about FSG & how they'd use stats to buy players like they had done in baseball & how good they were at using those stats.

Now they've decided on Downing you're unhappy with their decision. Surely they're using the techniques you yourself advocated. You recently linked a foreword that said overpaying for players makes sense in some circumstance. One would assume FSG would know when that was better than you?

Fuck, all this belly aching over greatly improving our team play and balance. In addition I remember Comolli and Kenny mentioning how they didn't want our transfer dealings to stunt the production of our youth. Downing will be very productive for us for 3-4 years and then Sterling will be ready to make the position his own. Now that is settled be happy that we have smart football people making decisions instead of an Accountant. There is no reason to second guess Comolli and Kenny yet.

Robbie Keane was our top target.

This 'not getting our top targets' argument is absolute nonsense. It entirely depends on the player.

I don't think anyone on here can say with conviction that they know Downing is Kenny's first choice. For all we know we could of been turned down by a number of wingers we've been interested in.

Agreed, I don't think we've been linked with anyone else quite so heavily or for so long.

Well quite a few well respected posters on here have said we've been talking with Mata for months. It could be just as likely that hes turned us down and now we've firmed up our interest in Downing.

Kenny himself has said only a few days ago that we won't get all of our first choices.
