Anyone else?

Of course there are more players we can list, but it depends on whether we agree, amongst ourselves at least, what selection criteria is appropriate.

Mata is not an out and out winger, but has experience for example. Is that fine or are some suggesting we need a guy that has it in his locker to stay out wide and put crosses in a la Downing? Would an 18 year old attacking midfielder with a lot of promise be worthwhile considering?

What would people say if I told them we were still pursuing Mata even with Downing sewn up?
[/quote]

I wouldn't believe you, that would take our spending well past the 120m mark (including jan)

Haha. You'd think wouldn't you?

I'd believe it.

I can't imagine that Henderson, Downing and Adam will see us finished in the transfer market.

Our net spend is 44m currently. I think we'll buy more players yet

I might be inclined to believe considering we would have sold up to 80m quids worth of player also.

Yep, as I pointed out earlier on (& was roundly ignored), we've spent just 9m each NET on 5 players. Not too shabby.

We've been chasing Mata for months, as I've said before on here. We simply wouldn't be putting the time and immense effort in for a backup plan in my view.

People don't focus on net. They see big fees and get pissed off, which I can understand. If the fee is 20m for downing it is too much. But we're crying out for a left sided player and I'm willing to not argue with paying that fee for balance and a consistent threat on both sides of the pitch

The really top alternatives out there would probably cost in the same region as Downing or much more, the question is if they would want to join us. We cant offer CL footie at the moment and that is a big big factor for most players these days.

NZogbia is an option. Mental, but talented. 10 mill is the rumoured fee. Questionable attitude which isnt something KD and DC are to fond of if recent interviews are to be believed.

Bastos: Looks likely to join Juve, but his agent said there is a lot of interst. Barca, inter and chelsea. Older than Downing and would cost 13-14 mill. Good player though.

Di Maria: could be available. Will be very expencive. Id love him here, but would take ome convincing regarding to CL footie. Rumour is Chelsea are after him.

Mata: will be very expencive. Would be a great signing for whoever gets him, but looks likely to stay in Spain.

Payet: moved to Lille

Gervinho: moved to arsenal

Young: moved to utd

Hazard: looks likely to stay in france

Anyone else? Bastos is probably the closest one Id imagine.

This is a good list of options. And many would add more individual fire power than Downing, but while I am not the biggest Downing supporter, I think he likely would provide better service next season than any of those listed. This is especially true when compared with the most likely alternative - N'Zogbia. I like N'Zog, but his aerial service can be quite poor.

So, if Kenny wants to maximize Carroll with good aerial service, I understand Downing being a priority.

No, which is odd really because 'net spending' was all we were hearing about for years when Benitez was here. It only gets mentioned in the context of making out that the owners are tight.

downing henderson adam (whilst keeping hold of meireles and maybe cole and aqua)
I would expect us to challenge for a CL place

downing henderson adam + mata and a left back (whilst keeping hold of meireles and maybe cole and aqua)
I would expect us to challenge for the league

that would really signal the intent of the owners as I assumed the plan was to claw our way into a CL and then build from there.

That would be ACE if true Jon.

I agree with some of it Keni, but I dont think its entirely correct. We have no recognized natural left winger in the squad. As Kenny and Comolli have said there wont be signed any players that hampers the developmet of our acadamy players. We have one of the most talented lw in the country in sterling. As hes only 16, signing an established winger makes perfect sense to compliment the team, tactics, squad and long term perspective.

wingers are like buses, you wait ages for one and then three arrive at once*

*I realise we haven't signed any wingers yet 😛

Let's hope these Mata negotiations come to something.

He's already a very good player and will go onto get even better.

I'm hoping for a winger (which looks to be downing), anything above and beyond that (mata) is a bonus.

Looks like Villa continue to hold their ground. According to Bham Mail the reason Downing hasn't put in a transfer request is becasue he and his advisors feel it will make no difference in Villa's stance - i.e. Villa will reject it and not sell.

Aston Villa transfer latest: The challenges facing deals for Scott Parker and Charles N'Zogbia
By Mat Kendrick
Jul 11 2011
1ShareComments (5)Recommend (3) ALEX McLeish is continuing to monitor Scott Parker’s transfer situation – but the chances of Villa swooping for the popular West Ham midfielder are remote.

McLeish will not be drawn into a bidding war for Parker and any progress could depend on the sale of Stewart Downing, which is currently not an option for Villa.

Contrary to reports yesterday, Villa have not received – let alone rejected – an Arsenal offer for Downing to add to Liverpool’s two failed bids.

Nor are the club expecting a transfer request because Downing and his people are believed to understand it would make no difference to Villa’s stance.

Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia is yet to be seriously discussed by McLeish and the board, although Downing’s fate might have a bearing on that if a replacement is needed.

McLeish and soon-to-be new Villa scout Paul Montgomery are known admirers of N’Zogbia, who they nearly signed for Blues last year, but Villa would refuse to pay over the odds for the 25-year-old French winger.

Latics owner Dave Whelan could inflate the price way above £10 million after admitting N’Zogbia will almost certainly be sold with two years left on his contract.

Parker has been on Villa’s radar since as long ago as last summer when former manager Martin O’Neill was interested in the ex-Charlton, Chelsea and Newcastle man.

Back then Hammers owners David Sullivan and David Gold were demanding around £15 million for Parker who went on to shine despite the club’s woeful relegation.

Now, despite being contracted until 2014, the 30-year-old is available for half that price with West Ham resigned to losing him because of their Championship status.

Villa have carried on tracking Parker, who was last season’s Football Writers’ Association’s footballer of the year, following his all-action performances.

But there has been no bid from Villa for Parker, nor is one imminent, amid suggestions there could be a scramble for his signature.

The Hammers have reportedly accepted a £10 million offer from Turkish club Fenerbache, but Parker rejected the advances because he wants to stay in England.

Although Tottenham were widely expected to provide Parker with the opportunity to remain in London, they were reportedly put off by his £70,000 per week wage demands.

The salary package would also be a stumbling block for Villa if they decided to pursue their tentative interest in the revitalised England international.

Chairman Randy Lerner is determined to get the club’s wage-bill under control and is unlikely to sanction a move to boost an already well-stocked midfield department.

Villa will have captain Stiliyan Petrov, Jean Makoun, Fabian Delph and Stephen Ireland challenging for central places, along with young hopefuls Barry Bannan, Gary Gardner, Jonathan Hogg and Chris Herd.

Lerner is prepared to pay £3.5 million for Shay Given with the 35-year-old Manchester City goalkeeper set to complete his move to Villa Park this week.

But having been stung during the Martin O’Neill era, Villa are reluctant to pay transfer fees for others with little sell-on potential, hence their wariness about pursuing Parker.

Rumours Villa are preparing a bid for Tottenham’s Scottish international defender Alan Hutton, who played for McLeish at Rangers, are wide of the mark.

Villa hope left-back Stephen Warnock’s return to the first team fold will free up Luke Young to resume right-back duties with Habib Beye and Eric Lichaj providing cover.

brum not giving up without a fight.

If they get N'Zogbia I think they'll sell, it's probably what they're holding out for, to appease the fans when the inevitable happens. After selling Young you can see why they're reluctant to do anything until they secure replacements.

Excellent. That's good enough for me.

Rumours from an another site from pretty reliable people is that the deal will be concluded by wednesday.
Medical tonight or tomorrow.

Think this deal will go through wheter people like it or not. I for one is made up that we're finally getting a winger that can get to the byline and hit a decent cross. Fingers crossed.
