I'll never understand the policy of buying 10 x £10 million players and hoping one turns into a Sturridge or Coutinho. Yes, we should always try to bring through the next Gerrard or Carragher and in Flannagan, Ibe, Sterling, Sinclair etc we're doing it a bit, but why not spend £100 million on two proven world-class players?

Because, unless we offer them FFP breaching ridiculous wages, why would they join us? So they could carry us to success as a 1man band, or a 2man band? When they could go to more established teams that will still be successful if they have a period of out of form, and still get huge wages.
We have to accept we don't have the allure to the worlds top players that we used to have. We're now shopping in ASDA not Harrods.

I don't think much needs to change this summer, a very good striker, a very good midfielder and a replacement for Lovren will do wonders for this team.

Well, I wouldn't say wonders. There are question marks right across the back four. Will Flanagan be fit (there's something very mysterious about how little info has been given out about him this season when he should've returned much sooner). Manquillo will be sent back home. Skrtel might leave. Lovren might not. Moreno needs around ten years to grow a fully functioning brain. Enrique may finally retire from table tennis and realise he's crocked as a footballer.

Midfield: Coutinho and Hendo. Can may prove himself a fine midfielder. Still a need for another genuinely combative and clever central player.

Forwards: A Costa-quality striker, not false or half or part winger but a real ruthless goal scorer is needed.

So I'd say we need more than three before any wonders occur.

The Asda.

Obviously the assumption is that not much else will move, I expect and hope Skrtel stays, I think between him, Sakho, and the Lovren replacement, we'll be fine at centre back. I still have faith in Moreno, he's not the greatest yet, but he'll continue improving and has age on his side, also I'm sure Flannagan will finally be back in the first team next season, to provide proper competition. Manquillo still has another year with us, it's criminal he hasn't played more for me, as he looks a very solid right back, but maybe we can't rely on him for next season considering Brendan has thrown him into the void. We're also getting Wisdom back, but I'm not sure he's good enough yet, and also we're losing Johnson, so fair enough, maybe we need to invest in an additional full back, preferably someone who can play both sides.

I think we agree on the midfield and strikers though, it seems obvious we're going to get Danny Ings on top of Origi, I'm not sure that adds up to the Costa like forward you mention, which I agree we badly need.

To tell you the truth, Geoff, I usually shop in Waitrose, so I do. I like to use one of those mini trolleys that have more of a ledge than a deep bucket in front, because it fuels my creativity and my ability to change direction really quickly. Like, say, I'm shopping where the exotic fruits are and I suddenly want to go to the cooked meats - I can do that. That's no problem for me at all. I'm the sort of person who likes to shake things up like that. Not sticking to going up and down the usual channels. No, I'll suddenly swerve around and go back, or swing sideways. I read the supermarket very well. Sweets, savouries - I can go from one to another in an instant. That's me. And when I've finished, I like to go to where a real human being is at the checkout, so that I can pit my wits against her or him. Like I said, that's what I'm all about. I'm not afraid of that at all. She might offer me a bag, but I've always got one with me. That surprises her. Or maybe I'll produce some money off tokens. Another surprise. Maybe I'd prefer to buy different things, rather than get these things and then leave them to rot inside the fridge, but that's where I'm at, at the moment. I'd actually quite like a bigger fridge, if I'm honest, so that more things can be left to rot inside it. The one I've got is a bit on the small side, given all the shopping I need to do. Have I told you my PIN number by the way? I'm not afraid to do that. It's 3-4-2-1. If that doesn't work, try 4-3-2-1. And I keep my card in my top pocket on the left hand side...

Since that took some effort, I'll give it a like. Actually, quite good.

Somewhere there's an optimum balance between the two approaches which we've failed to find so far. We don't have the money or the pulling power to buy only proven world-class.

The above is second priority anyway. First priority is getting our whole transfer machinery right. Without that it won't matter a hoot what priorities we set.

Tony Evwns just tweeted that the owners apparently tnk the transfer committee is working well. I'd hate to see it doing badly.

I can't believe we repeated Spurs' mistake just a season later. Utterly retarded.

Well, he's never been in Rodgers' corner so he would say that, wouldn't he, because it places the blame for our underperformance totally on Rodgers' shoulders. Let's not forget also that this is the guy who "broke the news" that we were getting bought by the Chinese Govt.

If he *does* happen to be right about this, goodness only knows what criteria FSG are using to arrive at that view.

the owners are pretty fucking jarg. how the fuck we didn't get bought buy some super rich cunt when the club went for under 200 mill will always be a mystery to me. things would have been so different.

Brendan Rodgers has insisted he is “the best man for the job” at Anfield.

And he dismissed claims that Jurgen Klopp could be lined up to replace him as Liverpool manager in the summer by stating bluntly he has a great relationship with the owners, who know the strides he has made.

Rodgers was on the front foot on Thursday as he answered the inevitable questions over his future following the disappointing semi-final defeat by Aston Villa.

When asked if he was confident he would be there to take the club forward next season, he said: "Very much so, I don't think there's anyone better, that's the reality of it.

“Three months ago I was a tactical genius and performing to a good level. We lost a couple of games, some important ones, and now you’re not so good. But that’s football, people speculate.

“That’s why I don’t get carried away when we win and not too disappointed when we lose. I have a strong relationship with the owners.

“They understood this was going to be a process, not a group of ready made players used to winning. I din’t take over a 10 year machine which was used to winning.”

Rodgers was also bullish on the inevitable link with Klopp. The Dortmund manager will leave the club he steered to the German title and the Champions League final at the end of the season, and he has been installed as bookies favourite to be the next Liverpool manager.

Rodgers though, insisted he is not worried by the speculation. He said: “At a club like Liverpool you will have many names – in my time alone a lot have been mentioned.

“It’s part of being at a huge club which is respected worldwide. We've had former managers linked in the past and will continue throughout my time because it’s such a great job and great club.

“There was obviously a lot of money spent last summer with players coming in. Take the emotion out of last weekend and we probably over achieved last year and that same team had a world class striker in it and someone on fire in Daniel Sturridge.

Blackburn-Rovers-v-Liverpool-FA-Cup-Quarter-Final-Replay.jpg

“That team wasn’t deemed good enough for the top four and yet nearly won the title.

“We lost those players, brought in others to strengthen and improve the squad. We’re in the top five and reached two semis and in some ways have over achieved from last year.

“Obviously the ambition is to be greater than that and that of course means bringing in players in the summer. Last year was an opportunity and next will be an even greater one to kick on.”

Rodgers revealed that he doesn't know when Daniel Sturridge will return from a hip injury, which makes him a major doubt to face West Brom at the weekend, but Adam Lallana and Jordan Ibe will be back.

I'd have preferred if Rodgers had repeated what gkmacca posted rather than that bullshit. Maybe it's beacuse I've lost faith in him but that interview shows how fucking deluded he is. To claim that there isn't anyone better than him to lead the club just beggars belief. He STILL harps on about nearly winning the league which pisses me off when a Liverpool manager constantly claims second place as an achievement. I don't remember Benitez talking about nearly winning the league the season after we came second to United. Probably because he's won things and realises the difference.
And to top it all Rodgers then has the fucking cheek to say maybe we've overachieved this season. When you read his interviews rather than Watch the footage of them it really is hard to tell actual interviews from parodies as he's likely to say and claim all sorts of mad shite. No wonder i drink so much.

No one can do a better job than me at Liverpool - unless owners splash the cash, insists Roy Hodgson

The 'tactical genius' line is revealing. No one called him that or even implied it, but obviously in that puffed up ego of his he was thinking it himself.

This bit fucked me off more.

"I am super-ambitious in terms of wanting to win and there will be no greater place to do that than here, but of course in modern football there are lots of processes that go on behind the scenes that people will never be aware of.
“In terms of what we are trying to do, I do not see anyone better in terms of the hand we were given."

He's clever enough to throw little remarks like this into every press conference or interview, as if to casually remind everyone of the environment he's working in. Fucks me right off.

Not when he's winning a lot, then he's too busy discussing the subtleties of his brilliant the brilliant system, and the quality of the players who he specifically had work on their distance shooting in training and now its paying off.

But that's no different than any other manager we've seen.

Just know that if Rodgers is getting self congratulatory, your hope is about to be crushed.

“They understood this was going to be a process, not a group of ready made players used to winning. I din’t take over a 10 year machine which was used to winning.”

But the team of players he took over did win a trophy, reached the final of another and gave a creditable performance against a tough opponent.

Managers normally do talk bollocks when things are not going their way but the bollocks in this press conference is at dangerous level.

'I took over a team that had just won a trophy and was outside of the champions league places. I've kept them to outside of the champions league places, and won no trophies.'

'And spent $200M+ to do so'

Telling the owners to be forceful in the transfer market also strikes me as a little bit rich, If it weren't for Man Utd's own ridiculous splurge last summer our spending may well have been highlighted as one of the largest spending sprees of any team in history.

The truth is he (or the committee yadda yadda yadda) is arguably the worst fucking recruiter of players in the clubs history... I truly can't wait for Danny Ings to sort it out for us...

Entering the season with 1 single striker having sold one of the world's best is fucking doolally.
Not buying a keeper in as back up for Ming was fucking criminal.
Playing like absolute wank until December was simply unacceptable.
Getting turfed out of a soft CL group like a bunch of fucking no marks...

Then to have the fucking gall to turn it round claim tactical genius and point the finger at the owners!!

Fucks sake...

Hold your hand up Brendan and admit you absolutely fucked it up this year man, they sliced Dalglish for a lot lot less.

OH and of you get a good offer for Sterling sell the cunt... he doesn't cut it anywhere near as much as he thinks he does... John Barnes he aint.

I'm no happier about this season than most of you fellas, but some of the above is off beam IMO:

1. Rodgers' ego notwithstanding, that quote doesn't say to me that he's actually claiming to be a tactical genius - he's making a point about fickle reactions to him, and a justified one IMO, by saying that that's what he was being called when we were doing well;

2. It's a bit rich (to coin a phrase) to have a go at him for highlighting the need to be forceful in the market this summer when we've all been making that point relentlessly - and rightly - since Parry's time. Maybe we ended up with some of the players we signed last summer because we didn't close other deals we really wanted. Heaven knows it would hardly be the first time.

3. There's a real issue about the whole transfer committee business and who was responsible for which signings. Dismissing it as somehow unimportant, as one or two of you do above, is just lazy.

Quite, the "tactical genius" comment is just an exaggerated point about the media saying he was brilliant when it was going well. It just fits peoples agenda's about his ego, that's all. I don't really give a shit if he has got an ego, a bit of self belief goes along way. People moaned enough about how defeatist and unambitious Hodgson was.

Yeah, he's just saying he has fuck all to do with anything.

Sometimes things go well and the simpletons conclude it must be because of some magic on his part. Other times it goes wrong and they want him sacked

I still don't understand why anyone would choose Rodgers over Klopp. Isn't it the most brainless of no-brainers?
