I feel genuinely dispirited and depressed to say it but I think it would be better for the club and Rafa if he were to move on.

Quite apart from last night's performance a quote of his was the decider:

"It's a question of analysing why we didn't show the character we had to show in the first half."

Any team and Manager in a club at harmony would not be contemplating this, especially so openly. The manager should not be wondering why his players lack character.

We have plenty of good players, great support and should not be going 90'+ without threatening the opposing goal, especially for lack of character.

That said, when Houllier was replaced I was sure we could progress, now, with the internal politics at the club and other clubs getting better resources all the time I'm not so sure that the rot can be stopped.

Without improving resources, only a showstopping appointment can give us the boost to maintain top 4 and it will need a massive investment to match Chelsea and United.

I'm pessimistic, not a natural state for me.

I voted Yes for the first time.

I was and still am a big fan of Houlliers because he gave us back our place amongst Europe's elite, he won us trophies and instigated some rigid policies that were noticeably absent during Uncle Roy and Souness' tenure. Unfortunately he plateaued and it became obvious that he had taken us as far as he could.

It's a simlar situation with Rafa, he's done a great job and won us The European Cup back as well as a few domestic trophies. He made sure that not only were we at the top table of European fottball we became one of the most feared teams and we had some glorious nights. Unfortunately we seem to have reached the same level of stagnation that happened at the end of Ged's reign.

The good news is I believe this squad has significantly more talent than the one Ged left behind and under a top new manager we could turn things around very quickly. I don't particularly like Martin O'Neill as a person but I think he's a top manager and I reckon I could grow to love him if he became our manager and delivered league success.
I would be cautiously pleased if we got O'Neill. You have to wonder if he'd leave Villa for us though. They arguably have a better squad and they definitely have better owners. The only advantage here is the crowd, plus Gerrard and Torres. Not sure if the history (and resultant pressure to win things) is a pro or a con for an ambitious manager, given the paucity of our resources.

I think he might take it now, we're underperforming and people are now realising we don't have the resources to match the unrealistic expectations we've had for ages. Win the League, pah, no chance.

It'd be a no-lose situation for him: do well and he's a hero, do no better or worse than Rafa and it's not his fault the club 'was in decline anyway'.

A different style and probably 'more heart' but he's hardly exciting is he?

I've always been a strong Benitez supporter.

Up until this season I think he has over-achieved with the resources he has had in comparison to the other big 3.
Champions League Win, another Champions League Final. FA Cup win, progression in the league EVERY season culminating in last season's highest points tally ever and a genuine-ish title contest.
My critisisms of him were like most, overly-cautious tactics (which I thought he would abandon following last seasons final surge) .questionable man-management approach and his rotation policy.

At the start of this season, I considered it THE most important opportunity we've had since the summer leading up to Houlliers 2002/3 season, to make the RIGHT signings building on what we had achieved. Also, with Ronaldo leaving Man Utd and Chelsea not really strengthening, there was real reason to be optimistic of winning the title.

What transpired was the absolute opposite, of which I partly put down to Benitez but mostly down to our owners. The injuries have ofcouse made things worse, but this has been compounded with what has since been some bizarre tactics, persistance with certain sub standard players and some of the worst football I've seen for years all too often explained away with poor excuses.

My confidence in him has been severely knocked, but I am prepared to give him another full season, partly out of what he has achieved previously (which I'm not sure is right ), but also because I don't really see anybody else (Mourinho apart) I'd be eager to see step in.

Anyway, that my view.

I appreciate the effort that went into that post Khalido, but the owners have given Rafa cash to spend.
Ok, we can debate whether he has had the same as our main rivals all day long but we have not spent wisely. Rafa has to take the blame for that.

Only Mourinho is going to give us sufficient boost to rise above the inadequate resources and political in-fighting to perform better than sum of our parts.

O'Neill is 57/58 and settled in at a good, well run club.
He has built a very good starting XI at Villa and is working on bringing through some exciting youngsters. I would be amazed if he left all that to come here.

He ain't taking this gig on and running the risk of blemishing his glorious CV.
Man City all day, everyday. Put your house on it.

I think once rafa is removed we aren't going to get a top manager, instead we'll get someone who can't believe his luck at landing such a top job a bit like howard wilkonson with the england job. you'll get the 'new manager' rush which will quickly dissipate as he is found out, he'll be removed at around the two year mark and then the revolving door of managers will well and truly begin.

Nah, I reckon he's got more to him than that now. He'll want to prove something more now.

It's not logical, but I can see him joining us, we need new owners first though, not for a cash injection, but for stability of a kind.

I'd entered into a kind of delirium at the prospect and now you've come along and ruined it all.

I hope you're satisfied.

I'm not jexy, trust me mate, I'm not.
I haven't been this down about Liverpool for many, many years.
It's nice to dream though.

I know, I know. I'm just trying to cope with what I've known to be the inevitable decline.

I genuinely can't believe there's a single vote for Rafa.
6 years 200m fighting for a Europa league place. It's fucking shameful, really really fucking shameful.

IT's depressing but I think we need to start again. We need to lose some of our best players and not be able to replace them. We need to go back to local talent and blood youngsters.

I know this has been a shite season, but i still don't want him sacked yet.

"If" a suitable replacement can be sounded out though (and we fail to win the UEFA or get 4th), i'd not boo too much about it if he was.

We have dropped points to Wolves, Stoke, Blackburn, Wigan, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Fulham and Sunderland.

I keep coming back to this and just shaking my head. Quite aside fro
the fact Villa, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal x 2 have humped us, if we could even perform to a mediocre standard against those teams we'd be about 13 points better of.
I really feel sick today. Wigan...... Sunderland......fuck me.

You missed mentioning losing to Pompey also made us sick to the pits of our stomach but only pick Sunderland (fluke beach ball) & Wigan (unpardonable).
Who would do worse? Which manager in the premier league would take this squad and allow it to perform like it did yesterday? Or against Portsmouth?
Sam Allardyce
Avram Grant
Steve Bruce
Roberto Martinez
Mick McCarthy
Tony Pulis
all managers who've taken points off our tactical genius.
He's a fucking joker.

frank rijkaard?

would definately get liverpool playing in the correct manner that for sure.

and babel would start every week 😉

Yes, we aint getting 4th and even if we did he still has to go.

I was waivering but he has lost it.

Injuries, so what he's had cash spent it wrongly. Doesn't trust anyone, attempts to have us play as a basketball team i.e. we play in set moves, no individualism, jsut plain wrong in every way. We can't pass, defend, attack, score....

Everything just looks dark and bleak.
