I've always been a strong Benitez supporter.
Up until this season I think he has over-achieved with the resources he has had in comparison to the other big 3.
Champions League Win, another Champions League Final. FA Cup win, progression in the league EVERY season culminating in last season's highest points tally ever and a genuine-ish title contest.
My critisisms of him were like most, overly-cautious tactics (which I thought he would abandon following last seasons final surge) .questionable man-management approach and his rotation policy.
At the start of this season, I considered it THE most important opportunity we've had since the summer leading up to Houlliers 2002/3 season, to make the RIGHT signings building on what we had achieved. Also, with Ronaldo leaving Man Utd and Chelsea not really strengthening, there was real reason to be optimistic of winning the title.
What transpired was the absolute opposite, of which I partly put down to Benitez but mostly down to our owners. The injuries have ofcouse made things worse, but this has been compounded with what has since been some bizarre tactics, persistance with certain sub standard players and some of the worst football I've seen for years all too often explained away with poor excuses.
My confidence in him has been severely knocked, but I am prepared to give him another full season, partly out of what he has achieved previously (which I'm not sure is right ), but also because I don't really see anybody else (Mourinho apart) I'd be eager to see step in.
Anyway, that my view.
