I think there's enough of a kerfuffle over this one to warrant a thread.

Most of us appear to agree that Dirk and Hendo are fighting it out for the same place. Question is, who is your man?

For now, I'm going for Henderson and here's why.

I love Dirk. He's usually a big game player, when he's on he's really on and nobody could ever question his commitment.

However, when he's off, he really is off...and he appears to be off right now. Despite the miles he's ran and the goals he's scored we have won precisely nothing in Dirk's year at the club. In a squad bursting with mediocrity, he's stood out. But in a new and improved squad, is he still worthy of his place in the first 11? Put another way, is Dirk good enough for the top 4-6, but just not quite good enough for a title challenging side...and yes, I know we challenged three years ago but he was also three years younger then.

Now we have an option, albeit an expensive and so far at this level, unproven option. Having splashd the cash on him, do we not now trust the manager to play him? He might not be the answer (although i think he could be). He might need to be moved on, at a loss in a couple of years time but let's see shall we.

My point is this, love Dirk as i still do, we have to improve - individuals, the team and the squad - if we are going to win the title. We have an option now, someone who MIGHT be a better option than Dirk. Let's give him a good go.

Of course if the Diggler plays this afternoon, I'd love to see him smash a hat-trick!

Love Dirk etc, but for me off form its hendo. And at the minute, dirk is off form

Truth is its early fucking doors and players will be in form or out of form and will play themselves in or play themselves out etc.... if it aint broke, and i would argue that it aint, then dont fix it.

We need Kuyt we need Hendo and we need Carroll all of them.. to play well and ensure that our team finsihes each match with more goals than the opposition.

hard to argue with, but last season dirks best was when he was up front. But i don't think carroll has done enough wrong yet to be dropped. Kuyt stuggled with trapping a ball against arse and gave away a decent amount of possession, whereas henderson....well he's not done much right or wrong.

I'd like to see hendo given the chance to show us why we spent the money
 
I thought kuyt was disasterous in the arsenal game. If he is out to prove he should be getting picked he's certainly going the wrong way about it.

Can't agree. Henderson didn't do anything but at least he didn't squander possession consistently

For the record, I have no problem whatsoever kuyt getting picked up front (even at Carroll's expense) but I don't want to see him at right midfield again.

I didn't quote the first part because I thought Henderson was decent enough against Arsenal.
But nothing so far suggests that Hendo will be a certain starter for the rest of the season.
 
Henderson hasn't done anything yet, hardly involved in anything good we've done so far in those two games. Maybe he'll come good with more games and confidence, but as it stands it's Dirk everytime for me.
Both of them aren't setting the world alight with their attacking play right now, so for me it's got to be the one that will work harder than anyone else in the team, chip in with a few goals and help us keep our shape. We'll have Downing rampaging down the other wing and Suarez as usual sneaking off to both of the wings on the last defender's shoulder.
So the solid player in Dirk wins it for me. Obviously I'd prefer a Valencia/Downing/Young kind of player there but Dirk's the best we've got there right now with Gerrard being out injured and all.

I really haven't a clue how good Henderson really is, but he should be proving it first by coming off the bench.

Hope he proves me wrong today if he starts.
 
I would start Dirk and if he's having a bad game then bring on Henderson.

Both can fulfil other roles arguably better, so let's not fall into the trap that's going to be Dirk Vs Henderson all season, because that will not be the case.

When did I say anything a bout trapping the ball?

It's all about who he's more suited to play with. The Maxi-Suarez-Kuyt worked pretty well last season.
 
well i'm saying kuyt was abysmal because he couldn't trap a ball. How can someone who can't control a ball influence a game for the positive? Meaning carroll, hendo and adam couldn't get the ball from kuyt

Well OK if you put it that way. But I still think we'll get more from Kuyt if he plays with Suarez, Meireles and Maxi.
 
I'd rather play a player because he improves us, not because he's complimented by a third of our team.

Hendo hopefully plays well

This. Neither is an RM. I'm not sure why exactly they're supposed to be slugging it against each other for a slot in the team.
