Director of Football is....

Tony Barrett:

Although Ayre stopped short of defining the disparate roles or identifying the individuals who will fill them, it is understood that Pep Segura, the technical director at the club’s academy, is likely to be promoted to a similar role with the first team. A direct replacement for Damien Comolli as director of football is no longer being sought, but FSG is in the final stages of filling a general manager-style position.

What does that mean exactly?

it means that we're just promoting someone so nothing is gonna change with regard to our scouting networks or anything like that. total blag.

I don't see the issue with them hiring a general manager-style position. That role was invaluable to their baseball successes (see Theo Epstein), so maybe they're trying to reform the role into something they can relate with on the business-side. And it sounds like a role that they're hiring from outside the club for.

“We are going to have a different structure,” Ayre said. “There will be more than one person in and around that role, in the sense of dividing up some of the responsibility. We are fairly imminent on a lot of the positions where people have exited. We are quite close to the arrival of replacements.

“The idea is to have rather than one person with the responsibility for all things that Damien’s role took on, we want to make sure there is key focus in each of the key segments in that role, and there will be two or three positions in there.

“All will become clear quite soon, but running a big football club is a big challenge and it is evident you need focus in each area, with a specialist in each area to give us value in each area, and that’s the route we are going down.”

Hence, they don't have a fucking clue. Kenny was not good enough for this club. We will find 2-4 other guys that is good enough. Fuck off yanks.

Ok, I don't have the first fucking clue about us sports, as I think they're shite, over-glamourise everything & are way too stats based (everything footy is sadly becoming)the only decent thing they've produced IMO is nba jam & NHL/ea hockey.

As such can someone explain what the fuck a general manager is?! Is it a fancy name for director of football, or a fancy name for a manager, or indeed a different position altogether?

Do we truly need one, or is it just another bullshit title? If there's a dof too, Where's the hierarchy, who has final say on what?

Ask Ross.
He loves all that shit.

Because I'm far too lazy to explain it myself... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Director_of_football

The way I understand it, basically they're separating the duties that would all fall on the Director of Football's shoulders and picking someone who is specifically suited for each role. Sounds like Segura will be the Technical Director, they may hire someone to serve as an ambassador (surely that's the primary reason Zidane holds the DoF position with Real Madrid), etc and they'll choose someone else to be the General Manager, who will be in charge of putting a team together for the manager (based on consultation from the club's scouts, manager, etc). The General Manager, if they do this like they do in the US, will be at the top of the pyramid with regards to what players are brought in to / sent out of the club.

A GM is pretty similar to a COO mate; they're supposedly focused on the operations of a business and report to a CEO.

Where the CEO is involved with working with a CFO, a board, external stakeholders and being the public face of the company the GM would be focused on the general day-to-day operations of the business.

That's the theory though, in reality, the GM role has taken on much greater prestige in the last 10 years or so.
