Defense - Agger/Skrtel

That's actually why I'm concerned about him going off yesterday, and I hope it's just a stomach bug or something.

He usually only gobs off when he's fit; when he's injured he's more often than not keen to stay and fight for his place.

Cynical,yes...but there it is.

I like Skrtel, but he's only good when paired with Carra.

He's useless when expected to think and play for himself; and this is where Agger is better.

But being better on paper is irrelevant.

It's really disappointing since I htink we all hoped Skrtel and Agger would be able to form a good pairing.

Yeah I did, though the aerial threat (or lack of) was always a worry.

Skrtel has been all over the place all season, while Agger is a reader of the game rather than a tackler who gets stuck in. The problem there is we need a Sami/Rio type who will be a presence at the back as well as winning a fair number of headers, so who's the one who gets stuck in then? Skrtel always looked good alongside Sami, as did Carra, for that reason. While Agger has always been more of a elegant player who reads the game quite well, but lacks the aerial threat.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT IN MY SIGNATURE?

I PROTEST!

MODS!!!

I've usually defended Skrtel on here, but it's becoming more difficult with each game that passes.

That said, I'm not much more impressed with Agger from what I've seen so far. AFAIC the jury's still out on him, and I certainly expect him to keep his big mouth zipped in the media in future.

Completely agree.

thats not happening avvy

Since Skrtel's first season where he looked so impressive (I recall people on here claiming he was our Vidic), he's gone downhill and only performed sporadically. I'd get rid of both Skrtel and Agger while their reputations are still inflated. Buy Mertesacker and get Mexes on a free. Play Carra and Kelly there if required. New defence for next season:

Kelly -------Mertesacker------Mexes-------- New Left Back

Just dreaming, I know.

Agger and Skrtel would get fucked over by anyone half decent in the air.

Agger has his moments where he can win a load of headers.. He also has this bizaree heading upwards thing that is laughably shite. Every second game he will try and clear the ball and simply put it 10 feet into the air.

Skrtel - Shite in the air, gives away countless freekicks when asked to challenge long balls.

If we want to challenge for honours we need another Sami. The Spartan is great in the air.. but has 0.9% of the ability Sami had to organise the defence.

Ya...agree with this.

Agger is good at getting his head to the ball, but he doesn't alway head it with conviction. Which is also the reason his headers are too weak or off target when he is attacking a corner.

Could his constant back problems be to blame for this?

I want to see if Ayala can make it as a cb. His performances on loan at hull were, by all accounts, quite promising. He lacks pace, but is decent on the ground and in the air. He's young, but if he can read the game and his positional sense is good he could offer something in the way of hyppia.

Kelly looks like carragher with pace and I get the impression Wilson is more an agger style of player.

What we need is a senior cb to organise these young lads in to a unit. Carragher us the obvious choice.

The Greek we can move on and we should probably consider letting skrtel move on in the summer.

The question then, is do we retain agger, safe in the knowledge any one of 3 youngsters can fill in while he's inevitably injured or cut our losses and replace him with someone in their prime, but lessinjury prone & likely to be expensive.

This also depends on keeping Johnson & rotating him with Kelly (with Kelly also doing cb shifts). If we sell Johnson then we need another quality rb.

Clearly we need a first choice lb, but hopefully jack Robinson can start to push for inclusion in the first team next year.

I just wanted to pop in here and have a go at KHL and say:

Agger will never ever be a "world-beater" defender, whatever the definition of that is. I will wager my entire net worth on this with anyone and I am 100% serious. SELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I'm a big Agger fan.

Agger is a good player and better than Skrtel. However, neither has lived up to their potential because of injury, form or other factors. Ultimately, both should be moved on for players who are better and more consistent.

We need a clearout now and in the summer starting with our defence and the other peripheral players. Trim the wage bill and get players with ambition and hunger. We have way too many average Joe's in the team.

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has not had a meeting with Kenny Dalglish over his future, as was reported on talkSPORT.co.uk earlier this week.

We are happy to clarify this.

pretty unusual for talksport to report a completely fabricated piece of shit
