how many players are going to score shit loads on the left? not many is the answer. I think Silva might get us 5-7 a season and a few of those could be very important?

I dont know what else you expect, no one is capable of scoring boat loads from wide positions at this level, apart from the likes of Ronaldo
I expect double figures in the league and an above wide midfielder could achieve that.

Come on Headwand, there's been plenty of players over the last few years who have scored a very decent amount of goals from a 'wide attacking/ wing' position

why would we want one on each wing, what possible purpose could that serve?

We need someone on the left that can unlock tricky defences and chip in with a few. Silva fits that.

what we need is another match winner to support gerrard, torres and kuyt.

If players like Spud and Riise could do it, it's a fair point.

'disgraceful' is maybe heavy handid but we're talking 20+ million here.
also just because torres had average stats and exploded oesn't mean others will. you mentioned nasri and deco have their scoring stats risen above average since joining the english league?
Nasri has actually done alright with six goals considering the fact that he joined when he was 20 and Arsenal have often struggled. Deco is of course at the other end of the scale at the end of his career.

On an aside (it's an aside because I don't think Torres is relevant when discussing Silva), I said (before Torres joined) that he's always been known as a scorer of great goals rather than a great goalscorer. At Liverpool he's become both.

I've said all along that I'm not at all sold on Silva, but I'm gradually softening and do think he's got the ability to score more goals than his record suggests.

Normally I'm full of ideas during the summer as to who we should sign (Menez was my pick last year - not been an outstanding success so far though heh), but this time around I've got nothing. There doesn't seem to be anyone that doesn't have big question marks hanging over his head.

come on Neil who's going to score double figures on the left that you can be sure of and ready to come here for reasonable prices? it's bullshit, there is no one.

we have to take a chance on someone like we did with Babel , sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Glad it's not just me then. Bit shit eh?

While I feel we're in for a Summer of watching other clubs buy the big names (again), I'm kinda resigned to the fact that Rafa will buy players who first and foremost want to play for us and secondly, players he thinks will improve us as a team that extra yard through work ethics and other such qualities. And all that comes with no real guarantee of success, given his success rate with attacking players, but if we sign another Torres level player, we're laughing.

*sighs*

Que sera sera.

Yeah, I have no ideas about who to buy, mainly because I don't play Champ Mgr

I spent two years banging on about a 'catalyst' player like Cantona, and thought that would be Keane, and we all know how that turned out

And spent the last 5 hoping we would buy a pacy, goal-scoring, top quality wide attacking player, but I've largely given up on that, too

(Cheers Babel)

if there's one player that would make me feel like we'd win the league, it would be david villa.
Not sure where we'd play him though, but I'd be ecstatic all the same. Ditto Eto'o too.

he could play anywhere in the front 4. he's exactly like keane but more than twice as good.

Same here mate. I think him and Torres would be awesome upfront, and Villa can also play out wider/deeper.

It emerged last night that the Liverpool boss is pursuing Spain international winger david Silva with some vigour, and met with him in their native country earlier this week.

Silva told his fellow Spaniard that he would love to play in the Premier League, but there is still the stumbling block of the fee his club Valencia are demanding.

Benitez would pay around £17million for the 23 year old, but if his heavily indebted Spanish side try to spark an auction with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, then he will pull out of the bidding.

That's good, if true. So far Silva seems to be creeping under the other clubs' radars - I really hope we sign him before Barca or City offer £25m.

David Silva's Agent Holds Meeting At The Bernabeu - Reports

The winger looks as though he could be on the verge of joining Madrid...

04-Jun-2009 8:02:35 PM

David Silva's agent, Julio Llorente, has reportedly been at the Bernabeu this morning to discuss with Real Madrid a contract for the Valencia winger.

The Spanish international is widely expected to leave the Mestalla this year and either Madrid or Liverpool is thought to be his destination.

AS reports that Llorente was in Spain and not England today though as he met with Madrid sports director to discuss a salary for Silva.

It is claimed that the meeting went on for around an hour and a half, and they also spoke about the sporting expectations of the winger.

With regards to the price of the deal, Madrid are expecting to pay around €20 million to secure the signature of the Spanish international.

As well as Silva, the capital club appear to be on the verge of signing Kaka, and are reportedly in the market for Franck Ribery and Cristiano Ronaldo too.

Nevertheless, Madrid know that Valencia will not make a decision about Silva for at least another three days, when they are holding a shareholders meeting.

After that, the situation of both Silva and David Villa could become clearer, and one of them could well be off to the capital.

Not looking good for Rafa's first choice targets.

Isn't 20 mill euros about 17 mill £? Then its down to wheter or not he wants a move to Real or us. Why would Silva go there anyway, with Kaka, Ronaldo or Ribery on the way.
Anyhoo, why does it matter if he scored 5, 3 or 7? We outscored every other team in the league. Goals are not a problem. But his creativity will unlock those defences that park the bus at Anfield. Thats what we need.

spanish press reckon we had a 17 ill euro bid turned down. i have no doubt it's down to silva wanting to join madrid.

I have a vague recollection that one of Madrids tactics when trying to sign a player is to show an interest in a player that the club they are trying to leverage a player from has shown an interest in. They then pull out of the race if the selling team sell their player. I could have dreamt this, but in theory it would be.
Liverpool - we arent selling alonso
real - ok fine, we'll go for silva instead.
Liverpool - eh? Were after him.
Real - well maybe we dont have the money for silva if we get our first choice*wink*

i have no doubt this is true, but i expect this transfer will go through very quickly.

I'll be gutted. He's the one i wanted above all.
Who next? Barry gone, Johnson going, Silva going, Tevez going.....that was supposed to be our 4 players.

Are Real planning to buy every winger on the face of the planet? The good news is the price, which is not unreasonable. The bad news is that they will undoubtedly offer him a fortune in wages.
