only for 2 years, before 2007 he was severely restricted and even after 2 years of debt fuelled spending 2 of our rivals have matched it and will exceed it in the future.

you dont understand football finances, these things fluctuate, we could spend nothing this year and next year as we go bankrupt and into meltdown but all our rivals will spend big... so in 2 years you can say "since Benitez took over we've only been outspent by City, Chelsea, the Mancs, Portsmouth and Sunderland"

who knows, he might sell Torres to City for £100m and have an average net spend of £0m after 8 years.
Why do you keep avoiding the issue?

Were we wrong to expect CL football in recent years?
are we just expecting the CL or the title? some people EXPECt the title, i'd be happy with CL qualification every year under the ever changing and fluctuating circumstances
Then you're fucking cunt if you think so. We are built to win trophies every fucking season and when i mean trophy, its the fucking league title. You clear? Win them next season or fuck off Rafael.

What, and just bring someone else in with the exact same set of issues?

To win the league without a major injection of funds, he needs to be given plenty of time to build a winning formula, and we're getting there. If you want to scrap that now in some deluded desperation to win a league that we haven't won for going on 20 years, more fool you.

Stability is key in these troubled times and as long as he keeps qualifying for the CL, his job should be safe.

Silva flattered by Real talk
Valencia playmaker David Silva has admitted he is flattered by Real Madrid's reported interest in his signature.

Real are said to be eyeing an offer for Silva, while Liverpool continue to be linked with an approach.

Los Che are struggling for finances and it is suggested Silva and his Spanish compatriot David Villa are set for exits this summer.

Silva, though, has stressed he remains committed to Valencia, despite Real's alleged overtures.

"I don't know anything about what happened because I was at home in the Canaries and I still haven't talked to my agents," he said. "But Valencia should be calm.

"That a team like Real Madrid are interested is good for Valencia and for me.

"At the moment I am focused on the national team, I hope everything works out well.

"It's flattering that a team like Real Madrid are interested but at the moment I am at Valencia."

Tell me, a fan of 40 years, what 'this club stands for'?

I expect you'll rattle off a list of guilt trip cliches based on a golden period in our history that no longer apply in the modern game, and are mainly dragged up as justification to undermine the manager who is slowly but surely creating a new era, and with that heightend expectations.

The fact is, a lot of people worship Rafa because they really do think he's some sort of Messiah.

The only reason that is the case is because they have no idea what a title looks like; the idea that we were once the greatest club in the world is alien to them.

They're so convinced that we were doomed and that he somehow saved us.

Well.

I'm critical of Rafa mainly because I think he's a good manager, not because I think he's a bad one.

I believe he has the potential to be a great manager for us; but I think thats never going to happen with this shroud of low expectation hanging over the club, both from us and from him.

To answer your question, I think we were mediocre during the 90's and flattered to deceive thoughout the 00's.

40 years?

Not quite,heh.

The only thing this club stands for winning, if the manager can't win things for us, then we should try to find one who can.

Not rocket science.

Didn't even need to refer to our 'golden history'.

The fact that you think like this is very depressing, but not quite surprising.

As for 'slowly and surely creating a new era'?

I tuly hope so.

My greatest fear is of course that by the time we're actually winning titles again, you'll actually HAVE been a fan for 40 years.

As I said in my earlier post, I actually think Rafa is a good manager.

But he'll never be a great one when every mistake he makes is somehow attributable to our lack of money, the Yanks, or even Rick Parry.
How do you know he hasn't been a fan for 40 years?

Look, Rafa's a damn fine manager - not many here would deny that. But he's made a series of costly mistakes during his tenure which have, at the very least, slowed down our progress. Now Rafa's won his power battles there are no excuses, no scapegoat. All eyes are on him, he's never been more accountable.

The spending debate is boring as hell. He's bought some very good players for some modest fees and some fantastic players for about their value at the time (although obv Torres' value has increased). But also he's spent a shit-load of cash on unnecessary player and/or shit players. The bottom line is, he could've done worse, could've done better.

He delivered what we all wanted last year in his fifth season in charge, a genuine title challenge. As long as we maintain that level of performance will will hopefully the league in his time here. We've recently been dismissing Mourinho's 'achievement' at Inter by saying "My nan could win the league with Inter" but then ignoring the very context in which we compete in. It's all very well to say "winners expect to win" yadda, yadda, yadda, but it's a dangerous stance to take.  The Premiership has 3 of the best 4 teams in Europe within in it - I can't think of a time where it's been so dominant - and this has to be taken into account when assessing a manager.

Given the fierce competition it's not fair to set a limit on when we *have* to win the league by, but obviously his position will be far more secure the sooner he wins it.

Does being one of the top 5 clubs in Europe count for fuck all just because you don't whore your club around the transfer market to all in sundry?

We're easily one of the most attractive and promising propositions around at the minute, you wouldn't know it though. What a bunch of greedy fuckheads footballers are.

beforepeople come down like a tonne of bricks on footballers there are some things to consider

a) money.
footballers usually have ten years max at the top level to make as much money as humanly possibly, winning cups is also very important but I'm sure key in a lot of pros minds in the long term future of their family.
let's face it at liverpool they may not earn as much as...other places

b) location.
very important especially if there is a family involved. picking up roots espeically to move to another country is difficult and its not just themselves they have to consider other people come into it. what if a player is spainsh (for example) and their other half is used to the hot climate and exclusive shops.
liverpool isn't hot and doesn't have the brights lights of the capital.

yes you'd hope footballer would go 'yes! liverpool!, european legends and a CL fixture!' but there are other factors all well. I like the idea of bringing top quality but I don't expect it and I'm frankly grateful when it happens.

"Long term future of their family"?

That's a mask for greed.

If you're earning £60-80k a week you'll be set for life providing you don't gamble it away.

in any walk of life more money is money. if someone offered to double my pay I'd snatch their hand off, that mentaility would probably still not change even if I were on 50,000 a week.
Exactly.

At that rate you could play for a few months and be set up for life. Some of these guys, like Barry, have been earning 20k plus for probably the best part of 6 or 7 years, plus other perks too.

Saying in any walk of life it's the same, if you're offered double your pay then you take it, is rubbish. The fact that you're set up for life should be an added bonus of being a professional footballer at the highest level. Why, at 27 years of age after playing for a top tier club for years would you then take the whack over playing for a dream club that's well set up and on capable of putting up a domestic and European challenge?
