David Coote

I've always just assumed that refs are at least a little biased as well as being totally useless. If anything good comes of this (nothing will), it'll perhaps be the grudging acceptance that something needs to be done about the standard of refereeing.

I actually think he take the high ground and defend him. Klopp is a great human above all else. He’s clearly got issues.
Actually, the thing I thought would be funny was Klopp saying "cunt" at every possible opportunity and pretending he didn't know it was rude whilst the press officer (Matt McCann) lost his mind in the background. He once swore in an interview (think it was a "fuck"), was told off by a reporter and said that Matt had told him it was OK for him to say it (which he absolutely hadn't). He used to do stuff like that all the time to wind Matt up (friendly banter, mind).

The idea that all the premier league refs support Wycombe or Crewe is just nonsense. They all have bias. They all support a Premier league team but put Lincoln City in their CV so they never get overlooked for the big games. How coincidental is it that none of them ever declare an actual conflict of interest? Most of them are probs professional enough to overlook them... Most of the time.

Imagine being in organized crime and you see a chatty cokehead idiot ref making a video for you that can ruin his career. Then the other refs say, he's one of the good ones.

Then everyone posts videos and says we can't discern a bias in any particular way because all the refs are shit, and so many confusing decisions occur that you almost can't tell.

Imagine how rock hard you would get. If you hadn't already been making the money, and it all grown hollow by now.

Not a chance.

In any other profession, criticism or feedback will be taken and any public criticism would be responded with an effort to at least appear like serving justice. The FA and PGMOL though turn vindictive instead....This will be reason for more of the referees to turn on LFC for being the reason for one of their own getting disciplined.

Not long from now they will launch yet another bold and new campaign to stop the abuse of officials by players and coaching staff.

So the latest is that PGMOL have known about this video for over 4 years. In that time, Coote didn't referee a Premier League game involving us until March this year, he's only been on VAR or cup games. This, apparently, passes for punishment in their eyes.
So when they said they needed to check the video is genuine, they were lying. They've known it's real for over 4 years and were hoping it would never come out.
So never mind Coote, PGMOL is now in the firing line for lying (the checking it isn't AI line seems to have been an off-the-record press briefing).
Makes me wonder whether the club knew all along as well, because if they didn't then PGMOL have a lot of questions to answer.

I understand the law works differently in the UK, but I don’t agree with charging people with criminal offence for something they said to their friend in private, especially while drunk/stoned. Remove him from officiating Liverpool games or all EPL games - sure, but treating this as an actual crime, that’s just silly.

If that's true, it's precisely what I'm talking about. This closed doors approach to any scrutiny, reflexively circling the wagons, is at best inviting corruption, but it could be evidence of it. Why, if you were into manipulating betting markets, would you think "we can't get at them."

That's why I wonder if the club has known all along. Because if PGMOL just decided to take Coote off PL duties, as if to appease Klopp, and kept this to themselves, then they're in a right pickle now. If the Club knew and agreed to go along with it then that's a different matter, as PGMOL hasn't hidden anything from them.
But as you say, if Coote's mate can get him pissed / stoned and c-bombing on a video, then a gambling syndicate could easily manipulate him. Other refs too, probably.
For me it's similar to MPs salaries - you need to pay them enough that they don't go looking for money elsewhere and they become less corruptible, and if you're paying them that much you can afford to be ruthless about binning them off if they don't meet the standard because there'll be plenty of people looking to get in on the act in their place.

So if they sack Coote now they are effectively saying that his crime is not what he said, but getting caught saying it.

They should have sanctioned him properly at the time and made some announcement that he had been dealt with for inappropriate behaviour, while explaining that the details were confidential & sensitive. He could not have complained as they held the video

It's the FA - it's not a 'crime'. However as with any tape / video whatever, if it makes it's way into the public arena then it is then subject to legal scrutiny.

On reflection, why am I surprised?

The FA are the organisation who "apologised" for allowing the FA cup semi final proceed in 1989 when there was no safety certificate for Hillsborough ... 25 years after the fact and only when it became publicly known, despite, obviously being aware of that all the time. It is clearly in the FA lexicon that "guilty" means "being caught" and PGMOL have adopted that definition

So, to summarise, stakeholders involved here:
Coote - keeping his head down
Klopp - holding his tongue, for now
LFC - keeping their counsel
PGMOL - investigating, now briefing off-the-record that they are treating the video as genuine
FA - investigating Coote and, presumably, PGMOL
Other clubs - keeping a watching brief and probably glad they're not facing the press this week so they don't have to take a position on it
Keyboard warriors - pitchforks at the ready, apart from the ones who hate Klopp / LFC

This isn't getting brushed under the carpet. Best outcome, and most honourable process:

Coote resigns, issues fulsome apology, excuses himself on grounds of being pissed, tries to say he didn't really mean it. Biggest mistake of his life etc. PGMOL doesn't have to take a position on sacking him.
PGMOL issue apology for the conduct of their employee, promise to do better and will "conduct an internal review" and issue new guidelines to referees.
LFC "considers the matter closed".
Klopp posts a cheeky video on Insta calling Coote a cunt.

That last bit might not happen. Shame.

In a time where people are quick to pick up the pitchforks, I feel like we need to see this for what it is, a dumb "drunken" mistake.
Honestly, I'm in the forgive and forget camp.
Why ruin a man's life for something so trivial?

As an "ooter", I can't speak for those of you who are locals and I completely understand if you feel offended by his remarks about Scousers.

Regarding Klopp, love the man for what he did, but I can see how he's pissed off certain referees. Klopp is known to be a bit "emotional" on the sidelines. We've all seen how he can act towards referees in games. I'm not a fan of how he acted in certain press conferences either. Unrelated, but Slot seems to be a lot less confrontational and has handled the media extremely well so far.

Anyway, I don't want to see Coote get fired, but he can't be involved in LFC games anymore, that's for sure.

a Philosopher once said "“I hope that either all of us, or none of us, are judged by the actions of our weakest moments”

I didn't record my weakest moments, and neither did my friends use them to gather evidence that seemed almost specifically tailored to cause me to lose my job. Man, have I been lucky. There but for the grace of god.

I’d want him sacked for being shit, which he is. He would’ve got away with it had he not used German as part of his wording.

Yeah, fuck that. He can resign or get the sack. He’ll end up in the Saudis as a ref regardless.

Welcome to the digital age! I'm glad we missed it by a few decades!

The only option for that is demotion to a lower league where he can't impact premier league games.

His position is untenable now as he's clearly shown a negative view on a high profile manager, one of which was continually in the running for honours. Everything he does on a pitch will now be pulled apart. He's done at the top level

Ben Kitt, the individual who was filmed alongside David Coote in the viral video, has been suspended from his job whilst his employer carries out investigations.

He didn't say it about the scousers. That was his new mate Ben Kitts.

Coote is on the hook for xenophobia.

I can see a world where he's a lower league ref still (if the FA decide he's been punished enough). But the Premier league is done for him. He simply cannot be part of any Liverpool games directly or indirectly which puts the PL in a bind.
