What an absolutely moronic comment.

Languages are mandatory for a period of time in the UK and then optional to continue after that. That includes French which is spoken in two of the Countries you listed.

I really have no idea why you decided to question my quote. All I said was it was safe to say that the Brazilian Lucas was probably exposed to Spanish during his school years. After all, Brazil shares a border with many Spanish speaking Countries. In case you hadn't noticed, the English Channel separates the UK from the European Countries/Languages.

Plus I don't think you understand how typical dressing rooms work. After all it was the French speaking Evra that told the FA that he spoke Spanish "every day in training"

And you purport to 🙄

What is moronic is equating language learning in schools to being fluent in a language. Whilst at school we had a choice of Russian, French, Spanish, German and Latin .. I doubt anyone came out fluent in any one of them. Having over the past 35 years lived in 9 countries over 3 continents I can state very simply that learning a language fluently is never as easy as people seem to think it is, as demonstrated by the hundreds of expats I've met during that time .. and I'm sure they all studied one language or another at school !

In response to Mystic's "he's not even a native Spanish speaker himself!" you gave a list of reasons' in effect belittling the achievement. That's why I bothered to counter your comments, no matter how he learnt it you simply wanted to deride it.

I really can't be arsed with this anymore. The fact that people are are researching the Brazillian national curriculum is lolz.

The only facts that matter is that Brazil is surrounded by Spanish speaking Countries, modern day dressing rooms are full of different languages and it's normal for players of a certain culture to group together.

What's more likely, Lucas learning Spanish to speak to his South American and Spanish teammates so they can socialise and converse effectively on the pitch, or that he learnt Spanish to gain favour with the manager

go back and find where I said language lessons in school make people fluent.

Do you not think it's likely that Lucas hung around with Spanish speakers back in Brazil? I wonder how many Spanish speakers he played with in the Gremio squad?

I'm sure remembering to add ", a?" to the end of every sentence took some work though, a?

Oh it's way more complicated- you have to shorten words and end them with vowels.... sometimes even vowel combos... And you've got to add in expletives and make up new words.... and then add some unnecessary aggression.

Hence - "I'm going to the football this afternoon with my good friend Stephen and we shall be have some cans of beer and sausages at a barbecue",

becomes

"gawan the fackin footie with tha cant stevo this arvo then havin some tinnies n snags at a fackin barbie and you can get facked cant "

Nobody has been researching the Brazilian national curriculum.

Nobody has claimed that Lucas learnt Spanish to impress a manager.

FMSPWR is having a bit of a mare here.

Which is almost scouse:

"Goin d fuckin match with that cunt Ste this avvy then having some cans & scran at a fuckin bbq, laters twat"

Almost every lad I know refers to his mates as twat & cunt when saying hi & bye, including myself. It's like a term of endearment that wools think is aggressive, but it's actually not, cos you've gotta be good mates with someone to know you can call them a twat for no reason & not get a dig in return.

Except the guy on the first page that said:

"Oh, and Lucas really is a kiss ass, he's not even a native Spanish speaker himself! "

Well, that doesn't say he learnt Spanish to impress a manager now does it?

It's also blatantly not very serious. I am going to assume that English is not your first language and let you off though.

I feel the need to dust down this old classic....

And all I said in reply was that he probably had some exposure to Spanish being from a Country surrounded by Spanish speaking ones, then we had the nerds come out with their knowledge of the Brazillian national curriculums whilst ignoring the people that said "yeah, actually Spanish and Portugese are similar according to the people that ACTUALLY speak them"

As for English not being my first language, I don't know, what language do they speak in Childwall?

Mate you are painting yourself into a corner. Don't let it become your managers don't make a difference.

I'm not the one posting links to prove your opinion that actually backed up mine, or did you not read your own link?

"However, not all Brazilians speak Spanish and the number of Brazilians studying Spanish is even lower. In fact it is not difficult to understand the language. With basic studies and with the help of native speakers speaking slowly, we Brazilians can understand it. "

Does that back up your point that Lucas would have learnt it at school?

Most brazilians dont give a shit about spanish speaking countries surrounding them but from my experience most of them understand(and speak) spanish which is not the case the other way round.
I know loads of brits and american expats here and some of them have been here for a decade and still cant speak french which pisses me off a bit but i can understand to an extent. They work in english and their friends are other expats, still lazy imo.
And well footballers you cant expect too much from them really..

You're right in a way, but not in the way you think. In my experience most British people actually persist in telling themselves it's really difficult, and that's the biggest obstacle of all. In places where speaking more than one language is an everyday thing (the example best known to me is Malta, where almost everybody speaks English and Italian as well as the native lingo) it's not a problem at all for the great majority of people.

Yeah, looks like you were researching what Brazilian kids are taught in school to me. Go ahead and claim English isn't my first language, I'll go ahead and say it looks like you have Alzheimers.

I said he would have been exposed to it at School.

Now, seeing as the area Lucas is from is 75km from Paraguay then I think it's a safe bet to assume Lucas was around Spanish to some extent as a kid years before he ever even knew where Liverpool was:

"The city has a close relationship with Paraguay its next door neighbor, which is 120 km (75 mi) away. This is a strong factor in the ethnic and cultural union between the city and the neighboring country. This explains why 30% of the inhabitants of Dourados have some Paraguayan family link."

But please, keep doing what you've been doing all afternoon by trying to find some tenous link or explanation to claim otherwise.
