Cunning linguists

I find it laughable and unprofessional that they don't put an effort in to learn English.
It is not as they don't have the time. Lazy.

I've amended your sentence structure here lad - Wouldn't want anyone thinking you're lazy with basic syntax.

P.S - You can call me a cunt for pointing it out. I won't mind 🥷

I've been living in the USA as an expat Brit for about 23 years now.
People still sometimes have a problem understanding me when I use British vernacular or specific words that sound foreign like "water" or "tomato".
Call me a lazy cunt, but I have never learned the language and never will.

I get Dutch people trying to correct my pronunciation of such words as laptop and corned beef.

Oh, and Lucas really is a kiss ass, he's not even a native Spanish speaker himself!

eh? He grew up in Brazil which is surrounded by Spanish speaking Countries, so it's safe to say he was exposed to it in School to some level. He was best mates with the Spanish speaking Suarez and by all accounts our South American contingent plus UTDs and Citys all socialised together.

It's not in any contract as far as I know but they're certainly told about it when they sign and the players' liaison officer, Ray Haughan, is supposed to fix them up with a tutor. How Moreno's remained like this for so long is a bit alarming.

he's only been here 1 season. sure with intensive classes then you could get decent in that time but don't forget Rodgers spoke Spanish and probably loved talking in Spanish to Moreno more than he loved Moreno talking English to him

What on earth ? If you're English/Welsh you grew up just a few miles from France, Belgium and NL .. do all Brits speak one of those languages ? How many English speaking Americans speak Spanish even though there are nearly 30m people speak the language in the USA ? Portuguese is quite different from Spanish so he still had to learn the language ! Anything else you said about Suarez, City etc. is part of the learning process that you don't want to give him credit for.

Portuguese and Spanish are not all that different, generally they can understand each other in daily conversation. At least that's what my Brazilian friends told me.

If I lived in the States I'd do my darnedest to keep my English accent (though I'm not sure I'd succeed if I'd been there as long as you). A number of people over there still seem to like the accent and are kind enough to say so.

Myself and an English colleague were accused of not being able to speak English because we missed a few grammatical errors in a 50 page document.

A Spaniard in work said the same about Spanish and Italian. There was an Italian guy who sat besidr him for a while and he said he could understand about 80% of what the other was saying whenever he spoker Italian.

We were in Barcelona and Mrs Athens was speaking to a guy in Italian and he answered in Spanish, they understood each other well enough.

I lived with a Spanish and French girl (many many years ago) in Perpignon (S.France) and I always remember the Spaniard saying that she could easily understand Italian but the Italians seemed to have a lot more difficulty understanding Spanish. For whatever reason.

Following a Wine & Cheese rubbish art exhibition thing in the late nineties me and my then girlie landed in a coke & champagne sex thing at about 5 in the morning, there was a guy from some eastern european country who couldn’t speak English banging a bird who was snorting speed like vacuum cleaner and when she said “Do my ass” his face lit up, he put his hand up and shouted “ooooooo aaaahhhh, hi fy”. I left the brother hanging but I still think to this day we could understand each other.
Humans are amazing.

Moreno is a dumb fucker who can't defend

What an absolutely moronic comment.

Languages are mandatory for a period of time in the UK and then optional to continue after that. That includes French which is spoken in two of the Countries you listed.

I really have no idea why you decided to question my quote. All I said was it was safe to say that the Brazilian Lucas was probably exposed to Spanish during his school years. After all, Brazil shares a border with many Spanish speaking Countries. In case you hadn't noticed, the English Channel separates the UK from the European Countries/Languages.

Plus I don't think you understand how typical dressing rooms work. After all it was the French speaking Evra that told the FA that he spoke Spanish "every day in training"

Without wanting to get into an argument, I'm sure the English channel is easier to cross than the amazon.

Brazil is quite big. If you were in the middle then it is quite far to a Spanish speaking country. It seems that English is the most common second language there with Spanish third.

I don't think you understand what incentivises people to learn languages....besides someone else has already mentioned how actual Portugese/Spanish speakers can understand eachother relatively easily.

It's irrelevant anyway, it was the notion that Lucas was an "ass kisser" for speaking Spanish I disagreed with. Why would he not speak Spanish with his fellow South Americans, after all they have plenty in common in terms of culture. Who remembers "Being Liverpool" when Luis and Lucas both drank that South American drink?

Well I have lived in a country where English isn't the first language for the last 16 years.

I have also worked in Germany, Belgium, France and Denmark.
