Cricket - England Vs NZ

Well this 1st test looks like a draw. I can't believe I stay up for this but I'm a sucker for the willow. Cook is 92no - So I'll keep on and hopefully he'll get his ton. Compton looks good as well.

Although England managed top get out cheaply in their first innings, the wicket turned out to be extremely dead. The fact that Finn managed to get his first 50 on it tells us something! I gather the wicket at Wellington will be much livelier.

I agree it's problematical watching test matches in Australia and New Zealand on TV. There's always a temptation to stay up for one more over! I managed to stay up every night until the drinks break in the after-lunch session, and then fell asleep listening to it on the radio.

Be truthful - you're talking about tests in England & you're afternoon nap old boy 🙂

2nd test is about to begin - Anyone watching? NZ won the toss (Again) and bowl. Both teams unchanged. McCullum came out and said some nice stuff regarding Cook. Hard to really argue. I hope his form continues.

I have to say New Zealand as a country looks stunning. I lived in Sydney for 5 years and am ashamed to say I never made it over.

No worries - Pitch looks good and was a strange decision for NZ to put us into bat. Might be a rain affected match though. This is my first proper look at Compton as well. Looking forward to this.

From what I have seen of Compton so far, he seems like a typical England opening bat, i.e. a bit boring. 😉

Ha ha - Ok mate. I'm going to watch a flick with Mrs Astaire and catch up with it later. Hoping for a big opening score. Oh and Cook has just passed Wally Hammond in all time England run scorers. Decent! 🙂

So 161/1 at tea. I said at start of play I thought the NZ choice to bowl was a weird decision. I should be a cricket captain 😉

Great from Compton - And as always Trott is amazing. Hard slog for the NZ bowlers. Oh well 😀

Oh and this from TMS at lunch made great listening regarding the shambles that is going on in Oz cricket. Well worth a listen. Check it out Portly - Gives a nice insight into this summers ashes - http://t.co/HTbboe54d1

Yes I heard the TMS coverage of the Aussie cricket crisis. Ian Chappell seemed to be taking the side of Shane Watson & Co in the "homework" affair. Chappell's a nasty peace of work so I don't think he's a natural peacemaker.

As long as I can remember, the Aussies have been unremittingly hostile to England, which I feel is a good thing. I don't have to spend any time feeling sorry for them at a time of sorrow. 🙂

A good day so far. NZ played well but Prior is great as a number 7 - Spanking 80 odd runs was brilliant. I think the ball might bite a bit on this wicket so Monty might be key.

Cricket destroys my sleep patterns. Weirdly though I tend to write better in the wee small hours (That's my excuse to Mrs Astaire anyway!)

I agree that Prior's innings made the difference between a poor day and a good day for England. Went to bed at the end of England's innings and woke up to the news that NZ lost 3 wickets for 66 in the last session. Stuart Broad did well with the wind behind him, but Monty couldn't extract any spin from the wicket unlike New Zealand's Martin.

Hi @Portly - Are you going to be watching the home test Vs NZ tomorrow? I have a ticket to see them on Friday which should be good. After I see NZ I will have completed the set - Although I've never seen Zimbabwe but I'm not sure that counts. Anyway mate here's hoping for a great test and more importantly NO RAIN! 🙂

Hi @Red Astaire - Yes I will be glued to my TV at 11.00 this morning. I have got up earlier than usual so as to make sure I don't miss the start. My nephew Matthew has a ticket for Saturday.

The weather forecast is that the Test will get started in sunny conditions but it is likely to rain at some stage today! The forecast is showery for the next few days. 🙁

Edit: The latest weather forecast for today seems more optimistic - there's a good chance of uninterrupted play. 🙂

I think we're going to play very well in these 2 tests following the shockingly bad performances in NZ...reckon Andy Flower will have given the whole team a right rocket and with Swann coming back in the side will be stronger

Yep looks like a lovely day here in London - Set fair for most of the day. Nice toss to win with The Lying Rag out as well. Hope it stays the same for tomorrow - I love going to Lords. 🙂

Thats music to my ears as I'm on my way to London this afternoon for the weekend with the Mrs

I'm going to have to sample test cricket at Lords soon; been to a few others but can imagine nothing quite compares to Lords

@Got the moves like Carra - Oh yeah I remember you said you were heading down. Well while I don't think it will rain I'm not sure we are in for glorious sunshine either.

As for Lords - It's an extraordinary place. I've been fortunate to visit most of the major grounds in the UK and a few in Oz as well. Nothing compares to Lords. As a cricket fan I would recommend the Lords tour. It's fairly cheap and really good. Unfortunately with the test on they don't do it (Although not really great if the person you are with is not into cricket) The only thing that sucks about Lords is it's stupid location - I fucking hate trying to get to St Johns Wood!

Compton out swiping between point and cover. Rubbish shot but a good catch. Trott then takes 19 balls to get off the mark with a fine boundary. 56-1 at Lunch.

Martin spilled a return catch from Trott before he had got off the mark. He could end up regretting that when Trott gets to 200 round about Saturday afternoon! 🙂

Well shut my mouth!!! NZ all out for 68! England with a fine win. Broad got a 7 fer! 🙂

Great news! Im going to the 2nd test saturday in Headingley, never been to an England test match before so I'm pretty excited!

No idea yet, I live 2 minutes away which is pretty handy! My last exam is the day before so I think it will be a case of hair of the dog!
