Sadly, "soccer" is nowhere near their 4th choice sport.

this would probably be true in 2002 or 2003. In 2009 it's more like:

american football
nascar (seriously)
basketball
baseball
mixed martial arts (UFC surpassed the NHL in popularity and money years ago)
ice hockey
soccer

Take it from a yank.

You're absolutely right bunnyman, totally slipped my mind. Probably more like:

Outside of the grand slams, tennis just doesn't happen enough for Americans to care from what I've seen. They'll tune in to the majors, but they won't follow the smaller tours and tournaments. Boxing's popularity has suffered greatly since the surge in MMA. The UFC now outpaces most boxing events as far as pay-per-view buys. Golf and MMA could probably be switched depending on who you ask, but I think the message is clear - soccer's popularity in america is still left wanting.

It's all about money Neil - the other leagues are far more rewarding financially, so naturally, good athletes will be inclined to be there.

They could just try and import 'Adus' and hope they're in the Balotelli class (also Ghanaian by birth)

how many people in america? if they gave scholarships (do they already?) for footballing excellence rather (or should I say instead of) than american football/basketball then america would start to produce real talent because kids would see it as an oppertunity rather than a gym pass.

Won't make a difference mate - a) they have this 'scholarship and school' thing going with the MLS now (I think it's called Project 40 or something) b) if you're 18 and a great athelte, you could earn within 1-2 years, 3-10 million USD in the NBA or NFL, and around 2-3 million in the NHL or MLB (The MLS average salary is around 250k).

there is no way that america is going to get over the total apathy of soccer unless they win the world cup and that is going to happen unless they take soccer seriously so it's catch 22.

Lebron as a footballer, the height of crouch, the speed of torres, the pure athleticism and the strength of drogba. now that is scary

If Pele and Beckenbauer couldn't get the septics interested in footy, I doubt Donovan will. Let's take this offline till 2050.

USA do OK. I remember watching them in the boozer after that 6am England Brazil game in 2002, they were doing OK then, bundled out by the Germans who made the Final (albeit that they weren't great).

My niece represented the state at football, she was easily the best midfielder in Florida. She ended up going to university on a volleyball scholarship!!!!

Until there is the money in the MLS that there is in the NFL/NBA football over here will continue to fail to leverage the fact that as a participative sport football is the biggest sport in the US.

S Africa v spain 3rd/4th placeplay off kicks off any minute..

Injury free game please guys..

I watched the first 5 minutes before turning into over to the galway sligo game. I just couldn't listen to those horns for one minute longer.
I can't believe that dump will be hosting a world cup.

Riera is so average it's upsetting. If he and Kuyt are our starting wingers next year, again, we won't have enough quality going forward to win the league.

Robben, Lavezzi, Silva.. i don't care.. we just need someone. As we don't have to play CL qualifiers in August and have guaranteed group money, I was hoping we'd get all/both targets before preseason begins so they have good time to settle. We need to start off well next year to keep the belief/confidence going.

Its a bit annoying but banning them would be ridiculous.
Riera has been one of the best spanish players in this tournament.
We need someone like him on the right and a new striker.

Dirk's nailed on for the right, and rightly so.

Agree on a new striker though.
