From the Guardian

Clint Dempsey deserves an optimistic welcome from Liverpool

Pay no heed to misgivings over Liverpool's proposed new signing – the American international is a ferocious competitor

Two pairs of words have been prominent in the reaction to the news that Liverpool seem poised to sign Clint Dempsey once they remember to get the go-ahead from Fulham. One of those pairs has no business being bandied about, viz. Charlie Adam. The other pair is more pertinent: Brendan Rodgers.

The reference to Adam has been made by people who believe Liverpool have been seduced by one fine season into coveting a player who cannot reasonably be expected to bring Liverpool nearer to the level they aspire to play at. Such people should be sworn at like cold callers.

Because although last season was Dempsey's most productive, he has been an excellent performer in the Premier League for the best part of five years. Furthermore, where Adam's most obvious failing is a lack of mobility for which his attempts to atone lead him to strain, lunge and generally become clumsy, Dempsey is a genuine dynamo, the second most prolific tackler among forwards in the Premier League for each of the past three seasons and covering more ground than prize horse manure.

Tenacity and energy are Dempsey's first two defining traits and also the founding blocks of the style that Rodgers will seek to build, if his old Swansea City side were anything to go by. The drive that has already propelled Dempsey from his relatively disadvantaged roots in a small town in East Texas to the top of the MLS and then the Premier League ensure that he will not be rendered as meek by Anfield expectations as, say, Stewart Downing and young Jordan Henderson appear to have been.

This is a ferocious competitor who has played matches with a broken jaw and gone into challenges hard enough to fracture John Terry's cheekbone. A seasoned American international, he will be fazed neither by the stature of Liverpool nor the amount of off-the-ball work that Rodgers will demand.

That is the foundation. Dempsey, of course, offers much more on top. His well-timed surges, dangerous shooting and knack for the audacious and unpredictable mean he could help overcome the dependency on the undependable Luis Suárez for goals. His intelligence and instincts make him adaptable: while it is easy to see him slotting in on either side of the front of a Swansea-style 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2, at Fulham he also proved his usefulness as a shape-shifting No9 long before Cesc Fábregas showcased the role at Euro 2012.

Dempsey would deserve to be greeted at Liverpool by the same sort of optimism that Joe Cole's arrival inspired a couple of years ago: and since he is a more intelligent and influential footballer than Cole, the feelgood factor should last a lot longer. At 29, he hardly represents the far future of the club but he could play a significant role in setting it on the right path.

Skully, I've been harping about this since the beginning of last summer.
Tbf it's a bit difficult considering our predicament.
First and foremost we spent about £100 Million last year and got value for about a quarter of it and I think FSG want to be a bit careful about making the same mistakes again.

I want us to go and sign players like Jovetic, Goetze, Belhanda, Gourcuff etc but thanks to City and Chelsea we're getting priced out of those deals. We're complicit as well, considering that we handed the barcodes £35 Million for a £15 Million player.
However, I rate Borini, and I consider Aquilani a new signing. We've possibly got new additions in Suso and Sterling from the reserves as well. So there's some light in the end of the tunnel, hence my recent (somewhat) positive attitude.
We're being linked to Allen, another player I rate. We're looking for hidden gems and I think we're getting it right this time around.
Like I said before, I strongly believe that we're gonna make a marquee signing before this window ends, but I do think it depends on who goes and how much we'll be able to recoup.

fuck.

Brendan Rodgers today revealed that Liverpool have made enquiries about Fulham striker Clint Dempsey.

In an interview with Liverpoolfc.com at the team hotel in Boston, the manager moved to clarify the club's position on the USA international, who scored 23 goals for Fulham last season.
"Clint is a player we've enquired about, it is as simple as that," said Rodgers.
"Ian Ayre, our managing director, has spoken with the club to see what the position is. That is where we're at.
"He's a very talented player but we don't like to talk about other clubs' players."
Meanwhile, Rodgers also spoke about Andy Carroll and insisted a possible loan move away from Anfield would not be entertained.
"There has been a lot written and spoken about him but first and foremost Andy is a Liverpool player," said the boss.
"To consider a loan period for someone the club spent £35million on isn't something we're looking to do at this moment in time.
"Andy will be the same as every other player - if there's ever an offer that comes in we'd look at it as a club and see if it's going to be worthwhile for the club and the team as a whole.
"The club invested £35million in him. People talk about whether he can fit into my style or not, but if you're a club and you spend £35million on a player you'd like to think he can fit into whatever style the team plays.
"He's a good player. He'll join the rest of the group next week and we'll take it from there."

Let's see what the Dempsey fee is first. At the right price he could be a shrewd signing. Plus if it gets rid of Charlie Adam in some swap deal then it's bonusville!

And Andy Carroll is most definitely fucked at LFC.

it'll be 10 mill. for a 29 year old journeyman.

i knew he'd be signing the first day he was linked.

classic lfc signing.

I think if we can shift Adam in this deal it's worthwhile. Otherwise I wouldn't be in favour of it

Adam is a couple of years younger than and has a few more years left on his contract than Dempsey.
They should carry a similar value though the fact that we are keen to off load Adam and Fulham allegedly want to retain Dempsey means there may have to be a few million thrown in to complete the deal.
There should be no more that that though and Dempsey should have a similar wage to Adam offered.

Still think adam deserves another season.
I wouldn't be against it either Fabs though someone will have to make way if Allen comes in.
He is no worse than some of the players we have been linked with in my opinion

You could argue that if Allen comes in and Dempsey, then two/three would have to make way. Aquilani, Gerrard, Henderson, Lucas, Shelvey, Spearing, Adam. Add Allen to that and the fact Dempsey can cover the 'Gerrard role'..

Aqualini would be the obvious answer if we could find a buyer, which we seemingly can't, so Adam and Spearing would be the two most obvious names form that lot I guess

One

One or two Twitter rumours said Adam would be offered to Fulham.
We tried offering Adam but he didn't want to move South. Last I heard he was talking with the Tooon. In an ideal world he'll see sense and go to Fulham as a replacement for Spud.

It'd be a good move for him. Nice club, nice part of the world, steady Premiership club where he'd play every game.

So do i. He has a few serious weaknesses in his game(some of which can be worked on) but on the whole i think he's a good footballer.

At least he doesn't hide unlike some of our players.

As for Dempsey, said before i'd be happy if he signed. Strong lad, decent on the ball, experienced and knows where the net is.

However i'd be pissed off if he was to be a replacement for Carroll who's 6 years younger and can be a much better player.
Be alright if he was bought to replace Kuyt and/or Maxi, but not Carroll.

I reckon he would do very well at Fulham.
Villa might be a good option for him too, working under Lampard.
