Clint Dempsey

Anyone else get the feeling that Dempsey may not be Rodgers first choice but rather the owners wanting a US player on the team?

It'd be a bit odd for Rodgers to fight his corner so well over the DoF issue and then stand by while we sign a player because his nationality makes good marketing sense.

i think rodgers is still thinking about playerswho would do well for swansea.

it's budgie-esque.
As if Dempsey would go to fucking Swansea though.

We aren't gonna get anyone proper boss anymore without forking out top top dollar, so we might as well get a better than average team and do fucking well with it.

demsey and borini will be 20 mill.

sign a fucking 20 mill player instead.

no, a 20 mill player. not a player that cost 20 million.

Define one.

I get the concern, Dempsey isn't as glamorous as some players, he plays over here, he's American, his names Clint, etc.. He's in good form and has been for a couple of seasons, and yeah, I know people said similar about Downing, but this lad has been a high scorer for the last two seasons, in this league. I think £10m is over the odds, but I'd take him as a replacement for people like Kuyt or Maxi, he's experienced and will score goals - only at the right price though.

People seem to struggle with the concept of us being well short if the CL, are 200 miles outside the glow if the bright lights if London in a northern provincial city, we know it great but that's us.
We are not going to attract the caliber of player done of you tediously bang on about, and we have to pay a bit of a premium to convince some reasonable players.
Dempsey us a decent option and is, regardless of what some of the more vocal posters, an improvement on Dirk.
We need to blend these lower strata players to build success to get the golden key that is fourth place, before we can attract top players again, I don't think some realise how lucky we are to have Suarez. Time to wake up and smell the coffee if you think the likes of Dempsey, Walcott et al are benieth us or at thus sort if money too expensive.
Regards

Spot on. What we can buy are future stars though, the likes of Borini, Allen and co who can become those £30 mill stars we crave.

Ha not mad Danny, just on my phone, I try and avoid long posts on it as they get full of typos as can be seen - sorry. 😉

People don't get it. Just cos we can't attract the players Chelsea et al can, doesn't mean we can't buy shrewdly like Newcastle have. If we pay £10m for Dempsey, at 29 and with a year left on his contract, then I'm sorry, that'll be as stupid a signing as any since Carroll. We might get lucky and he'll play a blinder and make the difference in us getting 4th, but the chances are it'll just be another signing who'll drain much-needed resources from the club who'll need to be replaced in 3 years.

This is exactly the same bollocks people came out with to defend Downing last summer, just as Ryan said.

It's different though Peter. What did Downing do the year before for Villa? Other than scoring against us he did very little all season.

We can't just sign loads of 'maybes' when we know for a year that Dempsey will deliver. If he scores some goals and we get top 4 he's done all we needed of him.

Mate *if* he makes the difference and gets us 4th, then he'll be worth fucking £30m, let alone £10m. But is that really that likely? This is Clint Dempsey we're talking about, not Thierry Henry or Didier Drogba. Wouldn't we be just as likely to get CL by spending £20m on a shit hot 20-25 year old, who'll still be worth £20m in 3 years. I mean, I do get the conflict between buying for short-term effect and getting 4th, and looking longer term and missing out, but I really don't think Clint Dempsey at £10m is a sensible compromise between the 2.
