Good. Playing for fourth is a fucking travesty. it's FOURTH.
It would be an improvement on our current travesty of a season. The €50 - €100m can buy us players who want to play in the Champions League which is all part of building a better squad to challenge for the Premier League. I get your hatred for other clubs and the embarrassment of finishing 4th but a couple of seasons in the CL would greatly benefit the club. Mid table & Thursday night football sucks.

If there were fewer clubs actually playing in the Champions League we'd probably have more chance of getting good players, even if we weren't in it. More good players would have to choose interesting 'projects' rather than quick pay days and a few games in a flash competition. The problem now is there are so many teams qualifying, players and agents get obsessed with them even if the clubs have little chance of getting out of the qualifiers or group stage. Most of them end up in the Europa anyway. Take next season - if we lose out to, say, Leicester for a player, because it's his 'dream to play in the Champions League/I love that music,' it's a sign of how fecked the system is. I hate both European competitions now, they bore me to tears.

I agree the system is fecked and that football has been taken over/bought up and turned into horrible moneymaking mess and it's riddled with greedy agents and players alike, but thats how it is and thats how it's going to be. These owners aren't going to start handing over their £bn clubs back to the fans, we lost it when Sky arrived.

The fact is there are very, very few genuinely top players, and they tend to be smart enough to go to one of the very, very few genuinely top clubs (which are the great clubs that are worth committing about four or five years to). Then there are the over-hyped players who don't look beyond one year and will happily move to a club that probably only has a year (or simply an autumn) of the Champions League before plunging back to its proper, lower, level. I can't say I yearn to finish fourth so we can attract that sort of player. I'd rather us do what we're supposedly doing already, which is looking for a younger top prospect who'll help us win the league. The whole football culture has drawn people into the dream that qualifying for the Champions League is the key that opens all the doors. It isn't. It gets you some cash, true, but, unless you have a hell of a lucky year, you'll fare as well as you deserve to fare - which is not very well.

I don't really want to get into a discussion about two places vs four. I'd like to get into the CL, and while I do think "aiming for fourth" isn't really what we are about, if there had been only two places available in 2005, we wouldn't have had Istanbul and number 5.

But the issue for me about supporting Arsenal or Chelsea or City or whoever, simply because they "help our coefficients" in the Premiership does rather ignore the more distressing possibility: what if one of those cunts actually wins it?

You'd celebrate an Arsenal or Chelsea victory in the Champions League because it makes it more likely we will be able to have four clubs enter the competition (albeit the last one via qualification)?

"WoooooHooooooooo! well done John Terry! That's secured our four qualifying places for the next couple of seasons! Hopefully we can take advantage of that at some point! Enjoy your trophy Chelsea!"

The whole thing is a joke. The Barcelona president now wants to guarantee entry to the competition for the big clubs, whether or not they finish in their league's qualifying positions.

Why would he care? His team are never going to fail to get in are they?
