Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

There are going to be mad food shortages in the states as lots of factories in the Midwest had to shut down production because of sick workers. Apparently some factories had 50% of staff isolating.

Yet they're actually protesting (yes, in large groups, whilst wearing fucking trump caps) to get their businesses back open again in Ohio.

Meanwhile they have republican senators saying that the economy is the American way of life, & that Americans should be prepared to sacrifice their lives to protect it.

The whole thing is fucked up in the states. One reason why they have such a problem with prescription opoids is because most people don't get sick pay, so they use the opoids to get back to work after surgery, cancer treatment, putting your back out etc. and then of course lots of people end up getting hooked on them.

People protesting so that they can go back to work are scumbags.

They're not something I ever enjoyed enough to get addicted too. Opioids do very little for me, other than make me feel a bit ill & disassociated, so when I have taken them for pain I've always stopped as soon as possible.

I could defo get addicted to valium though, I always have some on hand, & have to be very strict with myself not to have them more than two days running cos I like them wayyyy too much.

I reckon I could get addicted to lots of things, but I'm too chicken to try most drugs. I haven't touched anything in years, and even at the height of my career I just really enjoyed the odd smoke and that was it.

I do chuckle at Sturgeon gazumping the conservatives every single day. You'd think if they had half a brain cell, they'd move their own briefing to BEFORE Jimmy Krankie.

When you have a semi-automatic rifle under your bed there is no need to sacrifice anything, you can simply take your piece of the economic pie by force.

Good. One less corrupt public administrative body that do nothing but take wealth from taxpayers and transfer it into their own accounts.

Nah. Chocolate. If it's in the house I'll eat it. I've stopped buying it, but salivate every time I walk past the chocolate aisle in a supermarket.

Thankfully the chocolate aisle in the supermarket is the one that is always crowded with people so I don't go down it. Irritating as that is, it at least gives me an excuse not to buy and immediately eat loads of chocolate!

Haha after China the chocolate/biscuit/dessert/cereal aisles are a delight ... and it takes all my will power (aka my wife) to resist the temptation.

The chocolate selection a bit shit in China then?! I just assumed they'd have either knock offs of our stuff, or our stuff relabelled for their market. I mean, the bars have shrunk enough that they could be eaten by short folk no fucking problem, most chocolate bars are about half the size they used to be!

Clothes are the same! Getting smaller all the time and they think we don't notice.

It's really hard to know how well we are doing in combating this virus.
I suppose one good thing is that at least our hospitals haven't been overwhelmed like they have been in Italy, Spain, New York, etc.
I think regarding testing we initially were doing okay and the setting up of the testing centres was done fairly well. But the processing of those tests quickly became a disaster. We have somewhat managed to remedy that and are at this point one of the highest testers per capita thanks to Germany. Whether we can keep it up though is another matter.
I though the government were doing a pretty decent job at first and at least I felt that there were genuinely motivated in their actions by limiting the amount of deaths in the country. More recently though, they seem to have returned to type and are more interested in how they can favourably spin any news.
They certainly have made a total fuck up of nursing homes. Probably mostly down to the HSE poaching staff from nursing homes at the start of the crisis leaving them understaffed. They were probably very reluctant to hand over any PPE as well. There seems to be a culture in certain quarters of the HSE of looking after your own corner and portraying yourself in a good light and to hell with the greater good.
Fingers crossed we get out of this mess relatively unscathed and aren't totally fucked economically but I ain't holding my breath.

I can't claim to know too much but it seems the HSE as an organisation is an absolute mess. The front line doctors and nurses from what I've seen (which thankfully has been very little over the years) are fantastic but fighting a losing battle as part of an organisation that bleeds money.
As stated earlier somebody I know was told they would be moved into contact tracing over a month ago (within the next week). Still hasn't happened. This virus is fucking relentless but early stage detailed contact tracing could have saved a lot of lives I heard first hand information of somebody who works in a psych ward, with psychiatrists who have to come into a hospital to conduct their session with their patients OVER THE PHONE. The testing and backlog of results has been a joke. The nursing home situation could have been worse. Some nursing homes were told they closed their doors too early (fortunately the one my uncle is in did this and they've had no cases so far).

One of Varadkar's first moves after the outbreak was to rehire a spin doctor. They got rumbled that they're going to pay over 100 million per month to private hospital, plus they're using COVID 19 to try bully other parties into Government with them. They got one sniff of some people thinking they were doing a decent job and went and pulled the same kind of shit as always.
