Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

My Nonna (gran in Italian) just passed in Cape Town last night ... The family can't even fly in to bury her, and the funeral will be tiny.
Stay safe over there ... From what I'm being told, the country is united by Ramaphosa - which is good. Hopefully, you guys will come out ok from this terrible plague.
I am really sorry to hear that mate.
Such a tough time for you all.

I have no booze in the house.

An amateur mistake to be sure. But I suppose it's the first step towards my Olympic dream.

My Olympic Dream involves turning the drinking of all the booze into a sport.

I fear, though, I am past my physical best to compete.

Still... there’s the Commonwealth Games.

Very sorry to hear that mate

Finally got my weekend essential purchases out of the car and into the garage.

1 x 16 can pack of NEIPA
1 x 16 can pack of Pilsner
1 x mixed 6 can pack (2 x Pilsner, 2 x Pale Ale, 2 x IPA)
1 x Btl Sparkling Wine (Pinot Noir Chardonnay)
1 x Btl Chardonnay
3 x Btls of Pinot Noir
3 x Btls of Shiraz

That’ll get me through the week.

Sorry to hear the horrible news coming through.

I feel bad for changing to something light hearted on that basis, but this is what SCM does best - so welcome to how they're handling things in Belgium

I'm so sorry bro, that's rough.

Sorry to hear this LTW, thoughts are with you and the family mate x

Does anyone know what the crack is with the govt and paying the wages (upto 80%)? I work currently for a company much much larger than that that turns over billions, are they expected to just bury themselves in debt (potentially interest free debt) to pay workers and not lay them off? The way I'm reading it is that people working for large companies are fucked if the companies decide to make them redundant, or am I reading that wrong? Looks like protection for small/medium businesses only?

Can't wait to see your next post in the 'Diet' thread !

Haha I think someone is deflecting. You went on about the measures they had taken whereas the timeline shows they were neither early nor extensive .. by a long way.

I still believe that the temperature in these regions has some inhibiting effect. Though Sing. has a remarkable A/C culture. Their malls, restaurants etc. are bloody freezing !

You are right that the measures are not extensive in terms of lock-down - even now people still go to work, visit malls, restaurants, and cinemas. On the subways and on the streets most people do not wear masks. In terms of early - well as early or late as everyone else in terms of closing the borders really.

The weather makes a difference but I suspect it is not the only factor.

The reason Singapore is doing relatively fine, I suspect, is because of its small size, and the fact that the level of health care, and paranoia, in general is quite high. The government at the outset committed to free testing and treatment for anyone with COVID-19, and this meant a greater willingness to test. Fever scanners are everywhere. Every time a case is confirmed, the neighbours / colleagues freak out and go into panic mode, the venue is sterilized at an exorbitant cost, and contact tracing is conducted (to the limited extent possible). Every fever is treated as a cause for panic and despair. All these are expensive measures which only work, as you have stated, in a small and relatively wealthy population. It is not realistic for every country to adopt the same measures.

As for the recent spike in cases, half of these are from students and locals returning from the UK, about 35% are from the rest of the world, and the remainder are local transmissions. If the local transmissions hit the level of Wuhan / Bergamo, then the country will go into breakdown since the population cannot afford that level of economic and social devastation - but there is an acknowledgement that this might eventually happen and Singapore might not be able to keep it up. If Singapore needs to, it will go into lock-down like other countries, or adopt similar measures.

This is the reason why there is a great level of co-operation between the people and the government in matters of survival- the population cannot afford to dick around with ideas like 'herd immunity'. It's not about dogma or principles. It's about survival

Don't know about that but a childhood friend said her son works for Ford and one of many being laid off next week. I'd have thought if they could access the 80% (think of how much it would cost the country though if every company could access those funds) they'd have done it.

Thanks for that ! I didn't know you lived in Sing. nothing beats an on the ground report. Great place to be at present (or at most times).

To be fair - all but 1 Btl of the wine is for cellaring - or at least not drinking anytime soon.

The beer will be for weekends only and I’m eating “better” and trying to figure out how to keep some sort of home gym activity going.

It's a bit mad that the swine flu started in the states but no one calls it the American flu.

Children under 5 years old that have died from a lack of access to clean water since the breakout of Covid 19 = 200,000+

Don't be alarmed or feel a need to do anything about it though. It's not contagious, and they are almost all brown kids.

What are you doing about it?

I mean, apart from being a tedious, bleating cunt?
