Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

Not going to lie, these last few weeks have got to me. Feel guilty because I know I'm lucky to still able to be going to work hence kept busy and not financially worse off etc - I appreciate that's not the case for alot of people. Can't help but feel mentally drained with it all though and the bad news seems relentless. Think I need to start walking/jogging more or something. Any other suggestions welcome. Apologies for rambling on, realise some people may have lost loved ones through this so my issues pale into insignificance. Just had to vent a little.
Nothing to be ashamed of mate.

The length of time this has gone on, the never ending bad news seems relentless, & as daft as it may sound, the length of time we're more or less sedentary & are inside without even an hour of so of sunshine makes a huge difference to your mental state.

Exercise will definitely help, as will getting outside for a bit every day.

I'd also recommend high dosage of vitamin D daily during the winter too. Helps a bit to combat S.A.D which everyone suffers from, whether they realise it or not.

From what I've read, it's the 3.5m vaccines due from Pfizer within the next month that the EU are wanting to block.

Seems very petty.

Yes, that's right.

AZ have several supply lines. One is in the UK which has been set up for a while and supplies the UK as a condition of the contract. This one did have problems in set up too, but as that was ages ago, it didn't impact as much.

Another AZ supply line is in the EU, which supplies the EU. This one is having similar issues to those that the UK one had, but as the EU order was three months later, those issues are being felt now.

The EU now want to block exports to the UK of a completely different vaccine. Not quite sure how this is supposed to punish AZ but there we are.

Don't think you are on your own. Pretty much everyone feels like that at the moment I'd say.
All that's missing is Sonny and Cher on the radio every morning.
Get regular exercise when you can, a simple walk and a bit of fresh air in the lungs helps me no end.
Try and stay away from too much mainstream and social media.
Bad news sells and the media are making sure their headlines and content are generating lots of clicks at the moment.

A couple of days back my mum (in her mid 60's & no underlying health issues) was invited for a Covid vaccine for this coming Friday, which seems too far to in advance to be an overage but below the age group threshold they're currently working through.

Hopefully its not an anomaly and they (in my locale) are ahead of the vaccination curve?

Perhaps more people have declined their appointment in that area, so more a case of paranoid people being behind the curve rather than the local government being good at anything for the first time in recorded history.

If you go with her to the place, there's a decent chance they'll offer you a shot too.

I think it probably is just a case of where your area has got to. The local surgeries have their lists and work through them. So if one area has managed to get through all over 80s for example, or has had people decline the vaccines or whatever, then the surgeries go to the next people on the list.

They have vaccinate everyone eventually so it seems fairly reasonable for them to keep going while they have supplies rather than just stop.

Employment laws wise, could we reach a state in late 2021 where employers in certain markets are demanding employees have the vaccine before returning to work/ working in a full capacity ?#

I'm guessing we'd be entering discriminatory waters but it seems like one of the few ways you could ensure participation in the vaccine / help kill off this variant.

I don't think employers can generally insist on people having the vaccine but it would depend on the industry. They've have to have a damn good reason to say that your job depends upon it for health and safety reasons (maybe people working in care homes or healthcare etc?).

I don't think the government expects or needs 100% compliance, just a large proportion. I don't know what that proportion is but presumably higher than the flu vaccine.

I read somewhere the aim was for like 75% by July effectively to establish “herd community”.

Will be interesting to hear how effective AZ one is, there was a report from Germany yesterday that it was something like 8% for over 65s but that was disputed immediately by AZ regarding some of the specifics used in the sample set. It’s all a bit misleading at times.

Which just goes to show how much of a shit show the whole programme is.

My wifes 99 year old grandmother still hasn't been invited for her vaccine. Just a letter to say it will be soon. Call to surgery and they say don't call us, we'll call you.

Other areas seem to have over stock.

Ultimately, like a hell of a lot of things, it's a bit of a postcode lottery sadly.

However, I personally wouldn't call over 7 million doses given a shit show. I'd call a lot of what the government has done over the past year a shit show, but so far at least, the vaccine programme seems to have gone well.

I guess the UK could have stuck strictly to each priority group at a time and made sure each area moved at the same pace. That's a perfectly valid view to take, by the way. Personally I prefer the approach to get as many doses given as possible as quickly as possible, even if that means some areas are ahead of others.

The one area this government (who you all know I have no love for at all), haven't fucked up is the vaccination program.

Now it's clearly because it hasn't been given to a private contractor, & is being run by the logistical corps & NHS (alongside the sharing of information about vaccines & benefits programs to support businesses & people it's a helluva argument for socialism coming to rescue of capitalism in a crisis, but that's not for this thread), but nevertheless, I have zero complaints, in actuality, it deserves all the plaudits it gets.

AFAIK only Israel is bettering the UK in terms of mass vaccination, effectively & at pace. That's a great achievement.

Due to the nature of the vaccine (short life span & refrigeration requirements), plus inevitable logistical restrictions & the unknown variables of who will be definitely be able to attend or will want to attend on certain days, you will have surplus vaccines in some areas, as such, if the choice is to contact people outside of the immediately vulnerable list to use the vaccine or destroy it, the choice is clear.

Are the giving people / scheduling in 2nd doses properly now or do they still reckon they know better than everyone else?

“Another COVID-19 candidate vaccine appears to be safe and roughly 90% effective against the virus that causes the disease. It also protects against at least a few of the variants that have arisen in recent months.

On Thursday, Novavax, a Gaithersburg, Maryland-based biotechnology firm, released interim results from two clinical trials of its candidate vaccine, one in the United Kingdom and another in South Africa. A third trial, in the United States, has recruited about 13,000 out of 30,000 planned participants and won't release results for several more months.”

Apparently more effective against SA and UK variants and believe can be UK produced.

In other vaccine news, Germany will not be using AZ against over 65s due apparently and have themselves orders more outside of the EU order.

Even better news from trials part of Israel rollout.

"Out of 163,000 Israelis given both shots of the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine, only 31 were infected with the coronavirus. That was compared with nearly 6,450 infections among a control group of unvaccinated people.

Of the vaccinated people who were infected, none were hospitalised and only suffered mild effects, such as headaches. Maccabi said the data suggested the vaccine was 92% effective, close to the 95% that Pfizer claims."

Do you have a link pls

It appears that the EU has now authorised the AZ vaccine. So at least they are now bleating about something that they are actually prepared to use I suppose.

In regards to the other new vaccines that are being announced, one assumes that they are considering forming a committee to draft the terms of reference of the board that will look at drawing up a timetable to appoint a sub committee to consider what data to request from the joint steering group to plan out a strategy to begin to outline their initial framework. Or something like that.

Was the AZ vaccine the one they won't give to over 65s? or was that pfizer?

Hopefully the Novavax one will be made in the UK so hoping that's all good for the majority of the UK pop, plus it's already apparently good results against the Kent variant.. not so much the SA one

AZ was the one that a newspaper in Germany claimed was not good enough for over 65s. This was later refuted by everyone, including the German government, who went on to order some more.

Pfizer is the one that the EU is threatening not to export to the UK in order to force AZ to export their vaccine FROM the UK.

I believe Novavax will be made in the UK. And if the EU are going to continue with their silliness over Pfizer, that is presumably where it will stay!

Yep. The EU have gone nuclear this evening. The supply issue with AZ is infuriating but this looks like a ridiculous way to react.

The EU was always the best of a bad bunch. It's not like they're always right. They're a bunch of fucking arseholes, they just happen to be slightly better than our bunch of arseholes. They've fucked this one right up. This is really playing into the Tories hands though. Boris will be getting sucked off by the entire press.

Literally everybody is slating them for this and it comes after endless faux concern for avoiding a hard border/the GFA. the general saber rattling preceding this shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody but they've absolutely fucked it with this move.

Absolute fucking dicks

Fucking annoying really. Was an easy way to show the EU is better bla bla and they showed at least as far as vaccines go that brexit made sense

Yeah the contract was pretty clear. The EU have shown themselves to be right clowns on this.

If anyone is due a second vaccine from Pfizer and are denied it because the EU blocked the export... wow.

Didn’t take long for EU to act like a bunch of tyrants did it...
Are they gonna just invoke article 16 each time there is a mackerel shortage?
They've been acting like tyrants for ages through the refugee crisis.
