Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

There's going to be national lockdown early in the new year. My misses works for Manchester council and all the marketing is being designed as we speak. At the very least Manchester and Liverpool will be in tier 4.

I think we should stay locked down until the elderly and CEV are vaccinated. We did 500,000 vaccines to date so we're flying through it. Nothing less than tier 3 has any impact whatsoever. Lockdown until March/ April, get all the vulnerable vaccinated and then open back up with a party.

The half measures and dilly-dallying just doesn't work. If your COVID response doesn't sound over the top than you're doing it wrong. We've surely learnt that by now?

The Christmas rules were a farce to begin with and will lead to the deaths of tens of thousands.
But will the schools be open?

Everywhere will be in lockdown from Boxing Day.

Totally agree but would add that we the public are at least as much to blame as the authorities, who had an impossible job trying to track a middle way between the scientists' recommendations and what Joe Public would actually comply with. As a cartoon I saw online put it: "Covid is transmitted through the mouth and nose but scientists agree that the main threat now comes from assholes".

What does this job of "trying to track a middle way" actually entail? What does a typical day at work doing this job look like? You show up, you do what, put the science on post it notes, stick them on a flip chart? Then put the social science behaviour on different coloured notes, and then what? Sweat away for hours trying to line them up on the flip chart? Looking at them. Reading them. Scratching your head at the impossibility of it all.

That's not work. It's just words. Being used as a facade to pretend they're trying weally weally hard. The only work they have been preoccupied with is the contracts they've handed out to their mates.

It's like the 5 a day campaign. 5 pieces of fruit and veg a day isn't enough, we're supposed to be eating 10 portions but the people in charge thought that 10 a day was too difficult to do.

Or you could wait for the rat to rummage through everyone's food bins and eat about that amount. Wait for it to have broken down and digested it all into useful chemical products. So all you need to do is sit back, let the rat do it's work, then catch it, bbq it, stick it between two bits of bread, and enjoy.

So today I attempted to get a lateral test in Birkenhead, in anticipation of family getting together on Christmas Day..

Have to think about my mother in law and my disabled daughter. Both are classed at risk..

But due to demand Birkenhead decided to close despite having boxes upon boxes of testing kits..

This as a result putting the other testing centres under even more pressure to near breaking point.. They moved all their staff to the other testing centres..

A little bit of planning and preparation could have prevented this.. Its was obvious demand would have increased in the lead up to Christmas, so up your testing programme to cope with the demand.. Bloody Mickey mouse operation councils we have here..

But then on reflection, I thought.. this is a capacity issue caused by governments historic austerity programs . Councils simply do not have the resources to cope with the demand..

Ain't that the truth. Councils cut to the bone. NHS thoroughly underprepared and underfunded. When they eventually get round to making up the bill for this mess you can bet your life it won't be paid by increase in CGT or a wealth tax. The bill will be paid by further cuts to the living standards of the weakest.

In the first lockdown there were a few people who passed away with the Rona but generally we had limited numbers of people who caught it locally.

Since the second lockdown the numbers have gone a bit mental locally.
A friend same age had it ended up in hospital and still struggling months on.
Various others have caught it.

Not sure if it's this new variant, the schools opening or just that people are more complacent but feels much more prevalent this time round.

All very impressive and that but maybe if they'd been less rabid and more sharper and effective this time last year then the rest of the world would not be in this shitshow.

In fairness, every other country has had 10 months or so to be sharp and effective, and there's been a drastic difference in some countries performance in doing so.

Yup agreed.
Lots of countries and lots of people have failed.
We've made a right mess of it and evidently just not prepared for a pandemic of any sort of scale really.

This should also bring to sharp focus the general catastrophe planning in various countries. Planning for natural disasters/climate issues etc and people's own preparedness for that kinda eventuality

It's absolutely bizarre we continue to pour money into the armed services and nuclear deterrent to be prepared for wars which won't happen, and then put aside a few pennies for climate change and pandemic preparation, which have been scientific guaranteed since the 1970's.

We're not alone in this regard, but it's a clear failure of thinking and smacks of male dominated, cock swinging leadership that I'd be glad to see the back of.

Nuclear weapons are built from actual science, by straight up gods of scientists. Military advances were brought about by actual engineering, and also gods. Perhaps that's why money gets poured into these areas, because they're genuine things that deliver genuine value and return on investment. Climate science and epidemiology are pure garbage built by morons who seek funding, rather than the truth. I for one wouldn't invest in them. Instead I'd invest in more weapons and hope those technological advancements spit out something with applicability to the environment.

Maybe concentrating on the advancing of science and engineering into alternative fuel and energy efficiency would be better than making bombs to be stored underground and unused. But I’m a weird lefty.

If you make a weapon, it better bloody work or you'll end up dead. If you build a plane, it better not fall out of the sky, or you're done for. If you design a refinery, it god damn better not go up in flames. These scientists have their arse on the line, which keeps the work somewhat honest. Money well spent.

Modelling a pandemic or forecasting global temperature has no downside if you get it wrong, and in fact plenty of upside if you dishonestly cut corners in the work. Money down the drain.

Funding alternative technologies and more efficient processes is different. It could be one or the other type of science, based on the situation and the people.

Who do you think makes weapons then takes them out to fight? The A-Team?

Imagine you were a weapons scientist. You're doing some work on a new rpg. Now think about what would happen if you built something, where the charge came out of the barrel and dropped 2ft in front of you. You're not out on the field yourself. But you're in the lab, and yesterday the person who bought those rpg's found out that they're fake news. What do you think will happen to you today? That is what keeps your work honest.

On the other hand, what will happen if Greta finds out that your climate model was fake news?

I don't think it's just a male thing. It's a psychopath thing. Thatcher would do the same.

It just so happens that most psychopaths are men.

There are 2 reasons you need weapons. First is to defend yourself. Who the fuck would want to invade us? We have fuck all anyone would want apart from “The City” and a creative games market. Just to cover ourselves we only have to make other think we have great weapons.

The second reason is to invade another country for their resources. If we had our own working energy sources we wouldn’t need to do that!

And the scientist’s arses aren’t on the line. It’s the manufacturer of planes/refineries arses on the line. They’d be the ones who get sued.

You're the only one who said anything about climate models.

Imagine you're a weapons scientist and you build an excellent RPG that works brilliantly. It's used to kill some poor fucker's family so he vows to kill the person who invented it and he tracks you down and cuts your head off.

I’d miss Dantes if that happened.

What is the value if investment in weaponry if there are no wars (apart from the arms sold abroad)? Like Trident, where is there any value in that?

Submariners get to stay underwater for weeks at a time then we're stuck with radioactive waste that remains dangerous for thousands of years.

It's well known that weapons developers are the only people who can invent something...
