Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

That wouldn't surprise me. Our CL game that went ahead seems to have been blamed on how poorly Liverpool fared too.
I heard that a good while ago. It is only recently that numbers od case in local electoral wards have become available.
That's how i saw that there is a big difference between Killester and surrounding areas

I heard anecdotally that a pub in Killester was packed with Italian rugby fans the weekend of the postponed game.
That area seems to have rates of infection 3/4 times the surrounding areas now.
Inner city Northside has had very few cases, possibly because they were not so likely to be on a skying trip to North Italy or Austria

It beggars belief that they would force the game to be called off and not try somehow to cancel flights from Italy. Well it doesn't really. The probably asked the EU and were told to fuck off so didn't do anything.

i know i shouldn't laugh at other people's misfortune but.

[Dailystar] Coronavirus patient dies 'after family unplugs ventilator to turn on air conditioner'
[article]
A severely ill coronavirus patient has reportedly died after his family disconnected his ventilator so they could plug in an air conditioner.

The man was being treated in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at MBS Hospital in Rajasthan, northern India. According to local media reports, his relatives came to visit him on Monday night.

While sitting in his hospital room they began feeling hot, so made the unbelievable decision to unplug his ventilator machine from the power source. They then plugged in an air cooler instead.
Some time later the ventilator's battery ran out and the patient's condition quickly deteriorated.

His family informed the doctors who performed CPR but could not save the man, and he died in hospital.
The family then reportedly verbally abused the hospital staff after his death.
Ventilators, which are used in the most severe Covid-19 cases, mechanically pump air into the lungs of someone who can't breathe unassisted.
They typically need electricity to function, although some can use battery power.

according to another report. the air cooler was brought from outside by the visitors. that does make sense of why they have to find a power source to switch it on.

how many people are there in the ICU that you start feeling humid after a while. then you switched off the ventilator so that you can switch on your air cooler. and when the ventilator battery ran out and the patient is dead. you blame the doctors.

seriously.

This Beijing outbreak is giving me the fear. We're doomed aren't we? I mean if not with the Miley then with the economics. I am officially strezzed

I heard you're so Northside that you can't even spell skiing, is this true?

God rest him, but you'd better allow me to join you in the dock as I couldn't help a guilty chortle myself.

One time when I was still at school (yes, I was once) this joke went the rounds:

"Mummy mummy, I just switched off Daddy's life support machine."
"What did he say?"
"Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh".

It's pretty scary. I've just read about 2 major outbreaks in meat processing plants in the UK too, which suggests the same hypothesis about cold environments.

That said, we've heard nothing regards any new strain, which would be the extremely scary thing, so as things stand there's no reason a vaccine won't work, despite that being a massive undertaking.

The strange thing is that I recently saw a chart of most deaths per 100,000 (of course there may be other factors affecting that stat) and Liverpool's was 144 (I expected it to be higher) but that was actually lower than Manchester and higher still was the North East. Midlands seemed to be amongst the lowest. Can't remember London / South East / South West but I'm guessing they were lower.

They closed down 22 wards but it seems to be under control after the early outbreak and contact tracing - only 32 cases in China today.

China shutting down over 32 cases...
UK whoooop we are down to 1000 cases let's downgrade the alert!

I'm sure there's reasons for all this.
And to be honest there definitely needs to be some kind of easing to help the economy.

I'm just praying people are more prepared for a second wave

It's a Tory government. Of course they fuck lie.

The amount of lies, half truths & 'misinterpretations' they've told us is simply astonishing, but not as astonishing as the lack of criticism they've got for it.
All Govts/political parties lie through their back teeth. All politicians lie ... they have only two concerns, staying in office and lining their pockets. It's naive of anyone to think otherwise.

R rate back up to 1.79 in Germany after an outbreak at an abattoir. If you don't all become vegetarians this will keep happening.

So yeah, this virus ain't going anywhere soon and whether I get it or not I'm fucked.

Yeah but it's happening in the meat production gaffs innit. It can't be just about cooking it. It must be about the handling and distribution of it.

At least these countries have spotted the new outbreaks. We'd just have Boris shrugging asking how he's meant to know

Generally you should cook your meat. None of this medium rare shite.

A spike in coronavirus infections has been linked to a large wholesale food market in China, after the virus was discovered on chopping boards used for imported salmon.
The development has prompted officials to warn people against eating raw salmon, although the origin of the fresh outbreak remains unclear.

Wu Zunyou, chief Epidemiologist of China's Centre for Diseases Prevention Control
Mr Wu told state media coronavirus can survive on the surface of frozen food for up to three months and that his agency "highly suspects" contaminated goods were the source of the latest outbreak.
However, he said more investigation was required, as it was possible infected people arriving in Beijing could have spread it.

Jin Dong-Yun, virology professor at the University of Hong Kong
"Virus contraction via frozen food usually involves viruses such as the rotavirus and hepatitis A virus being transmitted through the gastrointestinal tract.
"It typically happens with contaminated food consumption, which is not the route through which respiratory viruses infect people.
"SARS-CoV-2 is not known to be transmitted via consumption of contaminated food.

"It requires further investigation to determine whether a person can contract the coronavirus either by touching contaminated surface or via direct food consumption."

Paul Tambyah, president of the Asia Pacific Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
"A group from Hong Kong has shown that the survival of the virus is significantly altered by temperature and humidity.
"It has said in a preliminary report that the virus can survive for only a day at 37C (98F), compared with a week at 22C (71F) and more than two weeks at 4C (39F).
"The data relates to a solid inanimate surfaces, not meat.
"I am a little sceptical that this outbreak in the market was actually related to a source thousands of miles away carried through frozen food."

I wonder how many people would ever have thought it may spread on frozen food if it wasn't for this news that it most likely can't.

These gaffs are cold and loud. So basically it's people shouting at each other to communicate and thus producing a higher amount of aerosol in an environment which suits the virus.

Fire them all and employ deaf people and/or interpreters.
