Meireles is Chelsea's latest target as Blues weigh up new Modric bid

Chelsea are considering a move for Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles as they contemplate an improved offer for Luka Modric.

Liverpool are willing to sell Meireles to help offset their £100m summer spending spree and anticipated selling the Portuguese abroad.

However, Andre Villas-Boas knows him well from their time at Porto and is interested to see if a deal could be done. Liverpool want close to £12m for the 28-year-old who was voted the PFA Fans Player of the Year.

Villas-Boas wants more creativity from his midfield and sees Meireles as an ideal foil for main target Tottenham's Modric.

The Croatian is likely to miss Thursday's Europa League tie against Hearts through injury but Chelsea are pressing ahead in their pursuit and still want to put £30million plus unsettled midfielder Yossi Benayoun into the deal.

Chelsea, though, may have more success if they put Didier Drogba into the deal in terms of valuation and Tottenham's desire to buy in a striker.

Keep him I say, or ask for £30m, we screwed the cunts once, let's do it again.

If he wants to go then so be it. Do we replace him?

But after what he did for "us" last season, I just feel that it'd be extremely unfair to cut him loose.

I wouldn't sell him to those cunts, I like him and don't want to hate him, and I don't think we would.

regards

That's a very good point.

Hopefully Aquilani is jettisoned so we can end this speculation.

Maybe I'd give them Raul for Alex and Sturridge/Drogba

Deals like that hardly ever happen in football.

Meireles is a class act and should be a important first team player for us. Selling Meireles for anything less than what we paid for Henderson would make us a fucking laughing stock.

I really hope this isn't true...

Sometimes people seem to think its better to back ab average but overly criticized player compared to a genuinely good footballer like Meireles....it baffles me.

Soon there will be people telling us how Lucas is a better footballer than Meireles, just like how Carroll is a better player for the premier league than Aguero...

I think Meireles will be able to perform better than Lucas as a holding midfielder. He has done it for Portugal and Porto, anf he can do it for us. It's laughable that some dismiss Meireles as a light-weight to play a holding role and in the same breath project Lucas (The Hulk) Leiva as the best player for the role in our club. Physical strength has nothing to do with it, Modric played as a holding midfielder for a while at Spurs quite successfully....enuff said...

Please back our Raul.....

Never understood why Raul was dropped to begin with....very versatile player who plays box to box getting a few goals aswell...

The evidence so far doesn't support the view that Meireles can hack it as a holding midfielder in the Prem. You're right about his previous experience but that side of his game has gone AWOL here. That said, he's done well as an AM for us and I wouldn't like to see him go, let alone to Chavski.

Thats a bullshit rumour designed to let Spurs know that they have other options and wont be held to ransom over Modric. Fuck them Raul is better than any other midfielder at this club bar Gerrard and even Stevie is an unknown quantity now. If Kenny wants to let him go because we have to balance the books and have a surplus of midfielders then i can understand but I would much rather lose Aqualani, although I can understand why no club with any sense wants to take him on a permanent basis, but we should be holding out for at least €20m for Raul. Hes easily one of the most under rated midfielders in the premiership

Alex + cash would be a good deal. Kenny clearly doesn't value him much, even though I think that's wrong, but we certainly could use the depth at CB, so if it has to go down, that would be a good deal for us.

We'll see against the Arse whether KK values him or not. He is coming back from injury so his two run-outs so far look about right.

We've got a midfield seriously lacking in mobility and goal threat and the only three players who can combat that are a perma-injured ageing captain, an Italian International that we clearly don't want and our Player Of The Season from last season. It would be fucking STUPID to let him go and rely on someone like Henderson (who's an unknown quantity) for the rest of the season.

I doubt that he'll be able to hold down a starting spot this Season why I'm not all against selling him to be honest.

Booooo...

Agger sucks!

Does anyone think Adam and Henderson are better than Meireles? They may well be in the future, but it should be Raul's name on the team sheet until proven otherwise.

If we need to offload a couple of midfielders (which we should do) it should be Shelvey (loan), Spearing and Cole, not Meireles.
