Carragher and O'Hare

I'm a bit bemused by this thread, TBH.

For the most part we've been inconsistent at best in the league under Klopp and I don't share the optimism regarding our current squad. We can raise if for the big matches but we're much too erratic because the talent isn't there or it's injured.

We need about 4/5 players if we're to compete for the title.

next up on the Light Programme, professor Ernest Espeth on the correct heating of bacon, and Silas McDuth on setting fire to a pig.

We havnt been erratic though. Thats the point.
For his first few months we were, but for the last 4 months we have blown a lot of teams away with some blips and hiccups.
I guess as always a lot of my optimism stems from a fit Sturridge
Without him id be on the same page as you.

If Leicester can win the league...

We've seen some of these players improve dramatically under klopp and if we get a few top class players in we could well challenge. We probably won't like, but there is cause for optimism.

No not some Irish folk duo.

Im taken back to an interview Carragher gave a few years ago when asked what we needed to reach the next level.
His answer was simple 'Better players'

Ryan has many times on here posited that the biggest problem we have had is we have been reliant on one or two matchwinners for decades.
Owen and Fowler
Owen and Gerrard
Gerrard and Torres
Gerrard and Suarez etc

Maybe im being caught up in the hype of the Euro run but we have just got threat all over now.
How as a defence can you control Firmino, Coutino, Lallana, Sturridge and Milner when they play like that. To a lesser extent Moreno and Clyne too, I know they dont score much but they occupy opposing fullbacks rather than opposing wingers, meaning we often have 4 or 5 players attacking vs 2 centre backs and a DM. Its frightening really and the best options we have had in a long time. With Ings and Origi to come back in next season im really optimistic about the future. Obviously we have to keep Coutinho thats absolutely vital to us this year and winning this and getting Champions league would go a long way towards that.

But my main point is this.
If we sort out our defence and a keeper i genuinely believe we will be there or there abouts for the league next year.
Lovren has been immense and if the other lad coming in forms a good partnership next season we are in with a real shout. I would sign a DM to allow Can to be box to box and keep Milner in one of the attacking berths, but really the options are limitless.

I know Vardy and Mahrez and Kane are getting all the plaudits this year but its the defences of those 2 teams along with Kante and Dier who have enabled them to fight out for the league. Our front 6 is better than anyones right now imo we replace Mignolet with a proper keeper and get a DM to sit and maybe a stronger LB and we honestly have some real chance next season.

I know I know its always next season.
But Carrgher said we need better players. We have those.
And a manager too.
Very positive after the last few months.
Well considering a lot of teams have easily contained us this season I'm not as optimistic with the current lot. Having said that I expect Klopp to strength massively in the summer.

We need at a minimum

A superb run in Europe and the league cup doesn't cover the fact we've been dire for the most part in the league.

The team can beat anyone when they're up for it - and they work like dogs to make it happen - but not every game is special and when that desire and work ethic goes down a notch, a lack of talent and cohesion becomes apparent.

I think we have the makings of a pretty decent team but there is still a fair bit of work to be done - we need at least one first team player in every department.

There are question marks over our keeper, we pretty much know that we're starting the season with a new CB partnership and we'll no doubt bring in at least one new fullback given that we have practically zero competition or cover in that area as things stand. That's major surgery.

The midfield needs serious review as well. Henderson has been a shadow of his former self struggling with injury, Luke is finished, Allen is a squaddie (if he's still here) and Milner has been playing his best football for us when given licence to roam wide. I think we're in desperate need of a top class midfielder to pair with Can. Preferably someone with playmaking abilities because when Coutinho is out or off form we really lack someone who can link up play.

And then there is the attack. As we know, too much is riding on the transformative powers of Sturridge and we need to figure out how we can take the make the attack work in his absence. We really need another attacker with star quality - ideally a Griezmann type who can offer goals and pace out wide. If nothing else, we need someone to offer us a little more than Ibe has been able to as the pacey option out wide.

It's a real shame that injuries have compromised our ability to plan ahead as well as we might have done. The likes of Ings, Origi and Gomez could've all used this dreadful season to cement a place in the team / squad but now we go into the transfer market with niggling doubts over exactly what level of contribution we can expect over the course of a season from some of these guys.

I think you are being a little unfair on the way the team has performed since January.
We are where we are because we had a poor start under Rodgers and a poor transition. Our form in 2016 has been in the main part excellent with the exception of the games we have basically given up because of cup competitions.

And I think we have a great chance. Teams are struggling to contain our forward line. Issue is we arent containing theirs.

I think I've see this post the last few years ... and just like every year, I will agree and nod my head ... and think about the bloody boom/bust graph ...
