We have indeed had this argument before, which is why you should know that no-one is talking about "expecting" a top four finish, but rather making a bit of more of a go at challenging for it. Last season, we were there or thereabouts for fourth at times despite being rubbish, so your argument of not being able to produce any kind of reasoned logic to back this argument up is wrong. We weren't a million miles away. We ultimately failed and drifted off towards the end, but then that's why everyone wanted Rafa sacked, isn't it?

Rafa was sacked because of repeated failure to strengthen the squad. It was certainly not a knee jerk to finishing 7th. I don't remember many people criticizing him as a manager who was incapable of getting the best out of his squad. I think he did as well as it was possible till the midway point of the season and he lost the plot in the tail end of the season. We could have still had 4th - but if we did, i would have given credit to Benitez for getting the best out of squad he had. I would certainly not be drawing conclusions that ours was better than City or Spurs' squad. It was just about capable of challenging top 4 with one of the smartest tacticians in European football.
In the off season we went backwards. We had a squad that (in my opinion of course) was just about capable of challenging top 4, and we went backwards. We shiped Aquilani out, and brough Raul Miereles in. We lost Mascherano out and brought Poulsen in. Rierra and Yossi out for an injury prone Joe Cole and Jovanovic. We shipped Insua out and brought Konchesky in. Except for Miereles there is not much positive about the changes we made, while teams around us spent big money to strengthen. Birmingham had a better tranfer window than us. So if we don't move forward in the face of such intense competition, we are actually going backwards.

This season we've been far far worse, so now everyone wants Roy sacked... knowing that without a manager who holds us back, we can be a little better. So given that we're not *that* far off top, what exactly are your expectations for a new manager to do a little bit better because right about now you guys are basically giving out the same loser'ish vibes that Roy is getting such a hard time over.

Roy has underperformed massively - agreed, and it is also a fact that we are still only 4 or 5 points behind the 4th placed team. But we have only played 13 games in a very competitive league. People want Roy sacked because, the way we are playing, it would be stupid to expect us to be only 4 or 5 points behind the 4th placed team at the end of the season. There is every chance that the gap will be massive from the 4th placed team. That is the fear, and with a better manager we can at best hope to stay in touch with the top 4, but i don't see what you are seeing in our squad to assume that change of manager will get us fighting for top 4 till the end of the season.
I just don't see how you can build an argument for the strength of the squad based on the number of points we are behind 4th placed team this early in the season. I'm not buying it. We were comprehensively outplayed by Stoke, Blackpool, Sunderland and other no name teams this season.
Anything above 6th at the end of the season will be a big big effort and we probably would need a big Jan transfer window even for that.
