Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has told Steven Gerrard he faces a club-versus-country decision after the World Cup.
The Anfield giants' captain will skipper England in Brazil this summer, but has the added demands of Champions League football next term.
“I just think he’ll need to assess things after Brazil, as he’ll be 34 then,” said Rodgers after a 4-0 friendly win over Shamrock Rovers in Dublin, thanks to goals from Iago Aspas, Fabio Borini, Martin Kelly and Jack Dunn.
“He’s been a brilliant captain for me, a great leader, a brilliant man. He’ll arrive at the Champions League next season as one of the playmakers of the tournament.”
But with England heading into September Euro 2016 qualifiers, Rodgers added: “His condition is terrific. He’s in every day like clockwork, he eats the right foods, body weight right on the money.

"Next season, there will be a big demand. If he comes and asks that, I’ll give an opinion on it [but] I think it’s a decision he has to make.
“He’s a very clear vision of the game, and what he wants to do for Liverpool. He loves playing for England. He’ll go and concentrate on England and we’ll see what happens after that.”

Best thing for SG and his Liverpool career, doubt he will see it that way though especially before the world cup......

Deffo. Have this last two weeks in Brazil being called a cunt by people in replica Ing-ur-lund shirts in pubs in Burnley and Clacton and Portsmouth, or being cheered by the same dickheads who have been giving him shit for 'that slip' then sack it off for good. Fucking load of bollocks. If he wants to play next season like he has this then it's the only sane move.

Agree with Brendan and you fellas, but I wonder whether Stevie himself will see it like that. He loves being involved with England.

How about giving up the captaincy and playing part time, important qualifiers etc.?

I remember that Henrik Larsson retired, didn't play a single qualifying game for Sweden but was later on selected just before the Euro's started.

Seems like a good Idea but maybe just the odd big qualifier not the lesser ones.

Can they not pull rank with him and say "Listen, Bucko, we're the ones that pay your wages, put bread on the table, keep the wolf from the door, etc. etc"?

He needs to play the next three friendlies and the three group games to equal Beckhams total after that just ten needed to catch Shilton, I reckon he could be tempted to carry on for another year or so.

Unlike 95% of this board I'm an England fan as well as Liverpool.

However, my feeling are pretty much the same. After the WC run, one last push for an EPL title, leave England to Wiltshire and the next generation with head held high.

Have a feeling he will carry on to the Euros, it would take the piss a bit if he does, as mentioned above its time to leave it to the younger players and for him to concentrate everything towards Liverpool being successful in his remaining years.

I think he'll let his form and the new England manager's 😀 brief decide. Where he plays now, he doesn't really exert as much so he could conceivably still play on for some time. He might not be in a hurry to stop playing internationals as, even when he's switched roles this season, he's arguably still England's best option in the holding/sitting CM position.

Barkley, Henderson and Lallana might be the CMs for England's future, but all of them are more apt to press forward and play further up the field. The lack of holding or defensive CM options might prompt England managers to just continue to pick Gerrard and dissuade him from retiring.

The fact that Carrick at 32 is on the standby list for Gerrard's place tells the story. Or that Barry, at 33, has a legit grief for missing out on at least the list. Also... Tom Fucking Cleverly ahead of Barry? REALLY?
