Brentford (A), Monday 2nd of January

I didn't think Trent had a bad game at all last night? Got an assist and made several important interceptions
Some people on here are stuck in a narrative of their own making. He's been pretty good for a few games now.

Half of the squad should’ve been sold over the last three seasons. We’ve been too nice and needed to be more ruthless.

Been saying that for years though, haven't we (well some of us anyways)?

I'm kinda bored of saying and watching the same thing over and over.

It'd be a little bit more interesting if Klopp tried something novel to extract more out of what we've got but there hasn't been much in the way of tactical changes so we're stuck with the same 'ol shit.

And we’ve all picked the same names and pulled our hair out at some of the weird timings of contract extensions.

Only ones who should be left after this summer should be Alisson Trent Virgil Konate Robbo Kostas Diaz Jota Gakpo Salah and Nunez + the kids

To be fair we were doomed in this match with the poor grammar in the tread title. Its "2nd January", not "2nd of January". The "of" is used in spoken English, not in written English.

FFS - the small details matter
The big details matter too, like inserting brains into these players heads and a bottle inserted between their legs.

He did try earlier in the fall when we were shit. Then he adjusted. We sat back more, were more compact and narrow, and actually used the fact that we have fast attackers to our advantage. We stopped with the grinding pressing which we are not capable of executing either.

He also lost his man for two of the goals though. His marking at set pieces was horrendous. For the disallowed goal that defected off Mee. Wissa was allowed all the time in in the World by Trent who was just watching him control the ball off his chest and then finish. You could see Virgil losing his shit and screaming at him.

As I said last night. Whoever is responsible for our defensive set piece training needs to be shipped out.

Trents problem is he doesn't attack the ball when it's in the air. He expects it to drop to him each time.

Against Leicester we were lucky Dewsbury Hall headed wide. As Trent allowed him a free header 12-15 yards out. A striker would have buried it.

His one on one ability isn't in doubt. He's pretty good.

It's his heading and positioning for headers that's absolutely dire.

I don't see the value in the constant poring over TAA's shortcomings.

We somehow managed to go unbeaten for long stretches and win a bunch of stuff with him at RB.

He's not a great defender and he never will be - we know that. He can be a decent to good defender (as we've seen) but he needs a functioning team around him.

We have a non-existent midfield. The centre-backs all look well short of their best. Robertson has had some pretty dodgy periods / moments as well (see: Villa game).

There are games where seeing VVD still strutting around like he's been putting in 10/10s for the last few months is more annoying to me than TAA's mishaps.

TAA should be one of our most valuable assets and the fact that the situation has been allowed to degrade this badly is on the management team.

If we are being ruthless would Virgil and Mo make the cut?
Still think we’re a better side with them in the squad, and you got to be realistic with who we can bring in to replace given our continuous lack of investment…maybe with new owners we can have another discussion.

I think the non functional midfield is the key reason for a lot of the poor performances all over the team. The defense looks worse than it probably is given it has zero protection and players are just running through our midfield.

For sure.

We’re at the desperate stage whereby the shift to a 343 / 352 /3421 etc would probably see improvement for half a season.

Martinez stylee…

I think so too. a 3421 thing, however we might need a 5432 with our current form.

And although he finally (first of the season) got an assist that was the exception as he put in awful cross after awful cross (too low or straight into the keeper's arms). He seems to have lost his consistency.

Formation got no part to play, wouldn't change a thing.

The personnel is the problem, everybody knows this. Performances won't change until the dross and players who are years past their best are shipped out for fresh blood.

Pace in midfield
Creativity in midfield.

Fucking find some.

The problem now is that's massive surgery when it should have been a series of incremental interventions. If we sell everyone whose playing shit we don't have anyone left. It should have been three in three out for the past four seasons, that's what works for teams that keep winning stuff. Now we've backed ourselves into this stupid place for no good reason, and the only explanation is that Klopp didn't have this problem at Dortmund because Bayern bought all his best players off him once a year, so knowing when to offload players at the downward curve of their peak is a skill he never learned.

Again, I dont think Mo and Virgil are the issue. They suffer when the rest of the team is dysfunctional, as do all our top players.
The lack of midfield is hurting Mo attacking wise and makes our defense look much worse than it actually is, imho.

And who's paying us 100m+ for a 30 year old considering we've just offered him a new 350k a week deal.

I mean sure, they could...if they want to get hit with another hefty FFP fine.

But they're keen on offering a new year deal to Messi so can't seem them batting an eyelid for Mo & they'll probably go back in for Rashford/Bernardo Silva who are younger and would cost a bit less.

While Salah isn´t close to our biggest problem, I really think we messed up here not selling him.

Master !!! - spot on, you are absolutely right on this, he never had any choice at Dortmund did he ? that's why he does not actually probably know the art of letting go of players unless its forced upon him. Since he has been with us, the players he probably did not want to let go of were probably - Coutinho, Cann, and Mane. I doubt he has ever got rid of players unless he saw an attitude problem like the defenders we had when he first joined.

Sure, but short term, we need to button down the hatches.
