Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says he doesn’t need to add another player to his defence this summer thanks to the ‘terrific’ form of Kolo Toure.
The Ivorian moved to Anfield earlier this summer on a free transfer, as Rodgers looked to add experience to his defensive line following the retirement of club stalwart Jamie Carragher.
And the Reds boss says 32-year-old Toure has been in such good form he doesn’t need to worry about bolster his back-line any further before the new season.
‘Defensively, I think we’ll be fine,’ Rodgers said.

‘Kolo has been terrific since he came in here. He may be 32 years of age but he’s super fit and in great condition.
‘He’s a player who has looked after himself all his life. His age is no barrier and he’s someone with a winning mentality.
‘We have a number of other outstanding centre-halves in Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel. We also have an up-and-coming top talent in Andre Wisdom who will be a very good centre-half for Liverpool in the future. And we still have Sebastian Coates too.’

Kolo Toure says it will be tough to replace Jamie Carragher (Picture: Getty)
Meanwhile Toure, drafted in to replace Carragher as an experienced head at the back, admits it will be tough for him to fill the former England international’s boots at this season.
‘I’m still really hungry for more. I still think I can bring more in football,’ he said.
‘This season is going to be massive for me. I will just try to show that I am still one of the best defenders. For a defender, 32 is nothing and physically I feel great.
MORE: Luis Suarez should stay and win trophies at Liverpool, says Kolo Toure
‘It’s hard [to replace Carragher] because Jamie is Jamie. He was a fantastic player for Liverpool and in his time here, he was amazing.
‘For me, I just like to try to do things my way and I will try to do what I can, but I think it’s going to be really difficult to replace him. I will give my all and it’s going to be a great challenge for me.’

If we sell Skrtel we'll buy (hopefully) Papdopolous.
Skrtel staying would mean Toure is first choice.

Its no surprise that he's first choice. Got it as soon as he was paired up with Agger.

From this blog entry: http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/espnfcunited/id/8171?&cc=4716

In the 54 starting XIs he named in competitive matches last term, Rodgers used 17 different back four combinations - in addition to starting with a back three on three occasions – and only really settled on a consistent defensive line-up from early February onwards. That back four of Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger, Carragher and Jose Enrique started 11 of Liverpool's final 14 Premier League games, six of which brought clean sheets.

I don't think that's that much of an issue to be honest. Ferguson, off the top of my head, used Ferdinand, Vidic, Smalling, Evans, Evra, Buttner, Rafael, Valencia, Jones, Carrick, and probably some others on a heavy rotation basis last year and they still walked the league.

The difference being that (most of) those defenders are very good, whereas ours aren't.

Rodgers seems to me like the type of manager who likes to focus most of his daily attention on improving the attack and possession and, as for for the back four, he mostly needs stability and players he can trust. Once he finds the players he trusts, he is not going to rotate anything in defense, unless it's absolutely necessary. He is kind of opposite of Rafa in this - in defenders he is looking first of all for the right personality and character, whereas for Rafa players were interchangeable as long as they could successfully execute his tactical plan.

I think the only players in our back 4 that really earned Rodgers' trust last season are Agger, Carra, and Wisdom. Toure seems to be on his way to be added to this list.

Whilst I agree with your take on that, I 100% disagree on how Rodgers sets up his defence. It's been my only gripe about him since he came in.

He had a woefully constructed back 4 at Swansea, with limited midfield cover - and they got exposed time and again for it. It's the same with us; we conceded far too many sloppy goals last season, and we have not improved our options there.

I think I might be in a minority of one but I quite like Toure as a player and I'm more worried about our midfield than our defense.

Yup. We often look disorganized and tactically inept at the back (incl. midfield). Rodgers needs to sort that shit out this season.

We conceded the same amount of goals as Manchester United last season.

The defence isn't the problem.

The midfield is.

Man Utd had a leaky defence last season, too. The difference is that they had the firepower to compensate for it. We don't score as many, hence leaking goals becomes more important. That's not to say we've been profligate in front of goal - we were fourth in the league in that respect. But Everton scored 16 goals less than us and still finished above us.

The truth, and I think I'm stating the obvious here, is that we need to improve in all areas of the field. We have the makings of a decent team, we just need to raise the quality throughout.

Don't get too caught up in rumours mate, regardless of how strong they are.
I'm not but I do think that either one or both of Coates or Skrtel will be sold before the league starts. A new beastly centre half is a must.

We don't have a good defence. This isn't new news. Skrtel, and Agger to a lesser extent have become liabilities. Toure isn't really all that good. Johnson is shit. Enrique is very hit and miss. Wisdom and Kelly are still learning the ropes. Coates is a workhorse but unfortunately the actual work he does isn't what he's supposed to do.

I don't think we should be expecting any improvement in our defence this season.

Then we shouldn't expect any improvement in our league position either. I will find it fucking preposterous if we don't bring in a good CB this summer.

I'm not expecting it, especially if Suarez goes.

And yes, we need to splash out on a proven CB ASAP. Toure is not the answer.

We were joint 5th in the goals conceded league. Citeh conceded 9 fewer.

We were 4th in the goals scored league. United scored 15 more.

As ever, the number of drawn games has shaped our final points tally.

More goals needed.

Joint 5th or not our defence is rubbish. Anyone who watched us last season saw that and stats doesn't change our weakness to crosses and set pieces.

Jesus christ, go look at that video compilation someone made of all the goals we conceded and tell me our defense was even competent last year.
