Boxing please

After an insultingly bad undercard Groves fight started well. I have it 2-2. Chudenov is a rock. Taken everything and keeps coming forward.

Froch is a tit.

I did. I think that's Brooks career over. GGG broke his eye socket and Spence added to the injury. No fight is worth risking your sight.

Wasn't it the other eye this time around?

But you're right, I think this will have a major psychological impact on Brook.

They were saying on the radio this morning that he's not thinking of retiring but, on the contrary, has been talking about moving up a weight. 🙁

154 is a tough weight class. Some very good fighters there. I can't see Brook besting the Charlos or Andrade or Lara.

He might go and fight Liam Smith, and then maybe drop back again to fight Khan. That's about it. I can't see any other top welterweights getting in the ring with him again, and the 154 fighters should mostly smother him.

Brook should probably retire at this point, he's not short of a bob or two, and he's now risking his eyesight in both eyes every time he fights. To be fair though, it's no embarrassment what's happened to him - he went up like 2 weight divisions to fight one of it not the best KO artist in the world, and got splatted, and then went down 2 weight classes to fight a very special talent also with very heavy hands and a KO artist, and got splatted. He's not ducked anything with those 2 fights.

He hasn't, but JJ's right, it wasn't the best career management to take these two fights in succession. If he felt he was getting too big for the 147 class, he should have moved up to 154, and spent 12-18 months building himself up as a fighter there. Jumping straight to 160 to fight the best guy on the planet was just dumb. And so was then jumping straight down to fight the best prospect at 147.

I think Spence was mandatory for Brook's belt, so he'd have to have given it up if he didn't take that one on. God knows why he took the GGG one though.

Mayweather v McGregor on for Aug 26.

Should be a comfortable win for Mayweather even at his age, but you never know.

154 will help Mcgregor in terms of not looking dead which is normally does at the lower weight.

However at that weight class bigger heavier gloves are used (10oz) which should massively favor Mayweather.

Mayweather will let McGregor tire himself out looking for him, then after a while he'll just glide in and finish him off.

I doubt he has the power to finish him off. On the flipside, even though McGregor won't land anything on his chin, ever, he still has a disgustingly hard punch which he can land on other parts of the body. I have a feeling Floyd is going to think twice after taking that punishment, look up at a much bigger and younger man, then do his masterful running routine for the rest of the fight. This time it will look inexplicably bad for boxing, there'll be no way to dress it up as some sort of sweet science bullshit, and the fall out will cost poor the GGG and Canelo a lot of money the following month.

No-one thought Ali had the power to finish off Foreman, the man who had recently lifted Joe Frazier of all people clean off his feet with an uppercut, in Zaïre all those years ago either. I don't think Mayweather will try rope-a-dope per se on McGregor but I see the fight ending in a similar way.

Is McGregor just doing it for the money then? I can't see any other reason why. I can't see him winning this and there's no way Mayweather would step into the octagon with McGregor.

The money will be significant of course, but I also suspect McGregor genuinely thinks he can win, and in theory he can, though I can't see it happening in practice.

It's a bit different at heavyweight. Human's can only take so much and when it's a sixteen stone monster who hits you clean in the head, then brother you are going down. When it's a lightweight, unless they have exceptional power and accuracy, it's going to hurt but it won't kill you. McGregor has been hurt far beyond what boxers go through and still fought on, the idea that Mayweather could hurt him worse than Mendes or Diaz did is fantasy.

I think the only way McGregor can win is if Mayweather runs towards him and McGregor clocks him one.

I don't think that's going to happen.

I struggle to see Mayweather putting McGregor down for the ten count, but other than that I'd say you're right.

He'll just defend as he has always done so well for the first three rounds, then skip about & defend for the remaining rounds whilst jabbing away occasionally to keep his points total up.

It's an absolute farce. Any number of British level boxers would easily handle McGregor. The only way this would be entertaining is if McGregor gets pissed off with not being able to lay a glove on Mayweather and just chokes him out.

They reckon it's 100 million each.

I'd get in the ring with either man for that much cash, despite knowing there's a good chance I could be killed!

100% he couldn't give a fuck he can retire a rich man after this and its always been about the money.

It's a win win for him

I honestly thought this would happen at some point (UFC meets boxing) but I assumed it would be a two event fight, with each fighting the other in their own sport.

Which would be fucking immense.

Although if McGregor got seriously frustrated with Mayweather, choking him out, or (even better) did him with a spinning roundhouse kick I'd probably piss myself laughing.

There is an actual clause in the contract for that, probably something like ten million for every elbow or kick you throw. It would makes sense, otherwise McGregor could have taken a couple points deductions for the team and in exchange for splitting his head open, which would go some way to evening up the fight.

I wonder if at any point in their discussions, the idea of Floyd taking a dive came up.

It would guarantee a second, and third fight after Mayweather wins the rematch.

That's what I'd do anyway, but I'm a greedy bollocks.
