Borini's goal versus West Brom yesterday

Decent debut season (2011/2012) that was I think - 10 goals in 26 games for Roma in all competitions?

Indeed. 20 league starts 9 league goals, playing on the side of a front trio including Osvaldo and Totti.

Was out for 3 months between Nov to Jan too (came back from injury and went on a run of 8 goals in 9 matches). The others were all sub appearances.

I think Rodgers plays two strikers only because he's got two fantastic strikers to work with and it'd be a bit of a waste to drop one or shift one out of position. Unless we had another striker close to their class, I think he'll revert to one up front when one of Suarez or Sturridge isn't available. If Borini can convince Rodgers that he's good enough, he might get the nod to play as one of the front two when one of Suarez/Sturridge isn't available, but otherwise, he'll probably end up in a wide forward spot in a 4-3-3 when that happens.

What don't you fancy about him anyway? His pace, shooting ability, ball skills, quickness, etc? Whenever I've seen him, I've come away with the impression that he's not the fastest or quickest, but he seems to have a good shot (and it's not just a blast; there's a good variation of shots as well) and he knows the runs to make and positions to take up inside the box to get a shot away. As a provider outside of it, he doesn't look that great, I admit.

I just don't think he has anything we can use. Not very good technically, not much pace, not even an especially good finisher. On the other hand, he's perfect for a lesser side like Sunderland with his work rate and intelligence. It would just seem a bad allocation of resources to have him wasting away for us when he could be genuinely useful for the right side.

I don't see the point of persevering with it. It was the wrong signing but has been mostly redeemed by a decent loan spell. Now's the time to cash in and move on.

Do those players exist anymore Vlad? Morientes was a shoo in on that basis, but in the PL, since it's got so fast once the legs go, the goals go..
I think they do, the clever ones don't rely purely on pace. I always thought Berbatov would have been a good option for that, but probably too late now, yes he's lazy , yes he can be a bit of a twat , but on the plus side he only needs half a chance in the box and he does not mind warming the bench as long as he is being paid. He just needs handling correctly.
Regards

Dreamy says to sell him.

Therefore, I think we should keep him.

While Borini's numbers are a bit inflated since he takes PKs, it has to be noted that Poyet has mostly played him at LM.

I'd like to see what he can do for us next season.

Not a bad thing to have a confident penalty taker though.

Champions league shoot outs...

Absolutely, but it's still with taking into account when comparing with other players.

I'm a huge Borini fan though, I think he would be a very successful second striker for us.

Scored for Sunderland again today. A header in the box, it seems. Still trying to find a video clip of it.
4 goals and an assist in Sunderland's last 5 games.

Wonder if this is Rodgers just talking him up for his confidence, or if he means it and intends to keep Borini. I'm happy with that, as I usually like us to give youngsters a chance, as long as they show good effort and are of a decent enough level to warrant being given an opportunity to prove themselves. I've said this lots of times, but he reminds me a lot of Kuyt, with the same limitations and yet the same effort as well.

Borini versus Chelsea:

Boss: Fabio is back to add to our quality
17th May 2014 - Latest News

Brendan Rodgers has backed Fabio Borini to supplement Liverpool's attacking ammunition next season after the Italian forward made a goalscoring return for the club on Wednesday night.

With the necessity for more experience of the Barclays Premier League in mind, the 23-year-old agreed a loan move to Sunderland for the entirety of the 2013-14 campaign.

The decision proved fruitful for all parties; Borini racked up 40 appearances and fired 10 crucial strikes for the Black Cats as they avoided relegation and reached the Capital One Cup final.

This week, the No.29 was back on duty with the Reds, shining throughout his display at the Aviva Stadium and curling a sublime second during a 4-0 friendly triumph over Shamrock Rovers.

Rodgers was impressed and, following an explanation of why the spell with Sunderland was crucial for Borini's development, the manager predicted a bright future for the striker.

"I thought he was excellent," said the Northern Irishman, who made the Italy international his first signing as Liverpool boss in the summer of 2012.

"With Fabio, it was just a case of we had Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, who I felt were going to play a lot of games; we didn't have so many games with no European football. Luis is so robust, he plays every minute of every game and he's a world-class striker.

"So for Fabio's development - and nothing to do with not thinking he's a quality player, because I know him better than anyone - he needed to go out and get games to prove his worth. He's done that.

"He'll now come back a year later into our squad in the summer; you saw with his pace and his power and his ability to get a goal that he's going to add to the quality that we already have."

On a sidenote, Sunderland only scored 40 league goals.

Adam Johnson
27(8) appearances 8 goals 4 assists

Fabio Borini
24(7) appearances 6 goals 2 assists

Connor Wickham
9(5) appearances 5 goals 1 assists

Emanuele Giaccherini
16(8) appearances 4 goals 4 assists

Jack Colback
27(5) appearances 3 goals

Regardless of penalty or not, of his goals, 2 were winners. That's 4 points he helped earned for them. Scored in the League Cup ties against Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City too.

11/12 was his 1st full season in top flight football (but only 30 appearances in total). This is arguably his 2nd 'full season' (39 total appearances).

It's still a very average return though, isn't it? I agree with peter. He just isn't good enough, particularly given our ascendancy this last year.

I don't think Borini has the problem Dirk has about controlling the ball. 😀

That's because I have posted just the clip which makes him look good. 🙂 But yeah, Dirk's first touch was pretty brutal. When it came to scoring goals in big games though, Kuyt was up there. Borini's got a knack for that too! 😀

I don't think bald statistics like that tell you enough about a player's contribution to the game. How many goals would Sturridge have scored for Sunderland if he had been playing for them last season?

Up to a point , but has he got the quality to do it at CL level? I think he deserves his chance back with LFC, but the jury's still out on him IMO.

They'd have built their attack around him because he's pacy and skillful and so he'd have scored a lot more than 6 goals I think.

'Pace and power' - sometimes Brendan doesn't half get carried away with the words he's using.

He scored 8 in 12 for Bolton a few years ago; so I think it's safe to say he would have scored a lot more than Borini over the course of the season. He's just a much better player and goalscorer.

I don't think he'll play many of the CL games actually unless Suarez and Sturridge are hurt or it's an academic game. As we're in Pot 3 or 4, we're only going to get one relatively easier game I think, with the other two against Pot 1 and 2 opponents being tough ones. Most likely, he'll get cup games, and some of the league games against teams lower in the table after midweek European games.

Since we happen to mention Kuyt, I'll just share his goalscoring record I found at LFCHistory.net. 2007-2008 was a weird season with him scoring 7 European goals but being useless in the league (3). Otherwise, he was generally good for an average of 12 league goals or so a season, playing mainly on the right, other than in his first season I think, when he was used mostly centrally.

When Kuyt was played up front with Suarez in Kenny's caretaker season, he actually started to score more regularly, netting 11 goals in 23 games, or 10 goals in 19 league games, including the hat-trick against the Mancs at Anfield.

I'll be satisfied if Borini develops and manages to have about the same impact as the Dutchman (with a better touch I hope). I still think he's best used up front in a front two because he lacks the pace, quickness and trickery to play as a wide forward - something best left to the likes of Sterling, Coutinho, Suso and Ibe. Unlike some strikers though, he won't dawdle and overdo things in the box but will shoot when the opening presents itself, which is an attribute I like.

I've also mentioned elsewhere that if we do get a couple of attacking mids, I would not be surprised if Sterling was also used at times as a 3rd or 4th striker.

He scored 8 goals in 12 appearances in his brief loan spell at Bolton so I'd suggest a few more. If Borini wasn't good enough for a side that finished seventh, he certainly isn't good enough for a side that finished second. He's proven he's useful, which is nice if we want to make a return on him, but I'd be surprised if Brendan is satisfied with him as back up to Suarez and Sturridge.

Shitloads

Well, looking on the bright side, at least he's better than Sanogo for Arsenal. 🙂

I was curious how Borini compared statistically to a couple of strikers who have a similar role in other clubs. Welbeck has played a fair bit out on the left this season, while Schurrer has played out on the right. I believe Weimann also plays on one flank or another, but I might be wrong on this one. The "Rank" column shows where they rank in the various categories among strikers aged 21 to 24.

They all had somewhat close/similar goals scored and assist numbers this season in the league (Borini: 7 goals and 2 assists; Schurrer 8 and 2, Weimann 5 and 4, Welbeck 9 and 1).

TwjrseJ.jpg

What's also interesting is also how highly Borini ranks in some areas amongst the forwards in the league:
- joint 4th in clearances, behind Bony (surprise!), Crouch and Walters (Stoke... no surprises there)
- 3rd in interceptions, behind Gouffran and Rooney (by 4 and 2, in 450 and 300 fewer minutes)
- 4th in fouls suffered, behind Hazard, Suarez and Frazier Campbell (surprise!)

The clearances aren't a surprise as he plays for Sunderland and seeing where they ended this season, it's probably right to assume that he has to track back to help defend a lot. The interceptions and fouls earned numbers are interesting though.

Of course, statistics don't tell the whole story; just something to read and up my post count while we wait for next season. 😀 Numbers from Squawka; can't vouch for their accuracy/completeness.
