Re: Birmingham Away

Neither are, of course, as reliable as Sami, and more importantly, nowhere near as dominant in the air. I want my defenders to be able to head a ball.

Re: Birmingham Away

---------------Reina
Johnson-Carra-Skrtel-Konchesky

--------------Meireles
Maxi--------Gerrard------Jovanovic
----------Babel-Torres

Does everyone hate Jova already? God Almighty, he's played what? Three games? He deserves his chance

I think we should give him at least a few more games until we start dropping him.

Still, as long as The Cunt is on the bench, I'm happy!
[/quote]

I think with a bit of a confidence boost (ie a goal or two) we will see the real Jova.

Re: Birmingham Away

Ideally, I want:

-------------------Reina
Johnson---Carra-----Agger----Konchesky
-------------Shelvey---Meireles-------------
-----Gerrard----Pacheco----Jovanovic
--------------------Torres

But we won't see that. So I'd be content with:

-------------------Reina
Johnson---Carra-----Agger----Konchesky
-------------Gerrard---Meireles-------------
-------Maxi------Pacheco----Jovanovic
--------------------Torres

But in all likelihood, it will be:

-------------------Reina
Johnson---Carra-----Agger----Konchesky
-------------Meireles--Poulsen-------------
-------Maxi-----Gerrard----Jovanovic
--------------------Torres

So ideally, you want us to lose? Good idea.

Re: Birmingham Away

Torres needs a partner up front, im fed up with Rafa's 4-5-1 shite and really annoyed Roy's sticking with it.
Play him with Jova, Pacheco or Babel and that will give him some more space.
Its crystal clear he doesnt like and isnt at his best when he has to play as a lone striker.

Re: Birmingham Away

If Meireles is any good, that's our best line-up IMO (Cole in place of Pacheco of course).

Huh, 50+ goals playing as a lone striker for us and perpetual struggle for Spain when plays alongside Villa, and you say he doesn't like playing alone? Playing up front alone is when Torres is at his BEST. He needs quality players behind him and on the wings, not alongside him.

Re: Birmingham Away

I like the idea of Kelly at right back with Johnson ahead of him. We will need to be pretty solid at the back and I trust Kelly ahead of Johnson defensively. Johnson will also offer something going forward that few others in our squad can, plus he'll cover Kelly. If it's not working out Roy can either do a straight swap and take Johnson off for whoever or drop him to defense and take Kelly off.

Well Villa and Torres have been playing together for 3 years winning Euro and World Cup, both scoring for fun. He struggled at the WC because he wasnt fit. They played all the qualifyers together.
Gerrard was playing just behind him as a striking partnership with Alonso behind them.
Now Gerrard has to take Alonso's position and play behind 2 strikers.

That's my ideal line up at present. *With Cole suspended for this game I'd replace him with Jovanovic.

Out of interest, how many games did it take you to form your current opinion of Lucas?

I just checked the stats, and Torres never scored during the qualifiers. And I think he scored just the one goal at the Euros. Spain may have won both tournaments, but Torres has never been 'scoring for fun'. That's Villa. They've never looked a proper partnership to me ever.

The problems with playing someone alongside Torres were highlighted against City when N'gog played alongside him. Torres thrives on playing off the defender's shoulders and for that he needs space to make his runs. That's taken away when you have a second striker. Torres would be lethal with a proper no. 10 behind him. Cole will hopefully be that player. Gerrard can play behind them in midfield alongside Meireles.

Though ideally, I'd have a central midfield of Shelvey-Meireles (in the Alonso-Mascherano mould) and Gerrard playing in the final third in a free role on the right, the same position he played in 2005-06 (scoring 23 goals). Given the lack of goalscorers apart from Torres in the team, Gerrard should always be breaking forward, and I think he'd be great in a free role on the right with Cole playing just behind Torres.

Re: Birmingham Away

Your 2nd para looks pretty interesting, and I think it's worth a try.

Not sure about your 3rd para though; I think Shelvey and Meireles both seem to be more attacking minded, though Meireles is suggested to be more box-to-box by people like Queiroz.

Re: Birmingham Away

I think it will be -

-----------------------------------Reina-------------------------------------
Johnson--------Skrtel---------------------Carragher-------Konchesky
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------Lucas---------------------------------------
-----------Meiereles----------------------Gerrard------------------------
Maxi--------------------------------------------------------------Jovanovic
-----------------------------Torres------------------------------------------

My hope is that Poulsen and Babel replace Lucas and Jovanovic. But i think he wont play TWO new holding midfielders and without Kuyt he will want to play at least ONE agricultural winger.

Re: Birmingham Away

I'd be amazed if Roy picked Lucas ahead of Poulsen. He just signed Poulsen and tried to offload Lucas.

True. I have a feeling however that Shelvey might develop into a sitting midfielder in the Alonso mould though rather than a Gerrard type, so it could be worth a shot. Need to see more of him, of course, to make a call.

So who out of Shelvey / Meireles is going to play the 'Masher' role ? Because neither are DM's or even defensive by nature.

I'm afraid at the moment we are stuck with either Poulson (who could yet turn out to be an excellent DM for us) or Lucas (*spits*) in that role.

Gerrard, Meirleles & Shelvey are all queueing up for the more advanced CM slot. We either have 3 CMs (as in the 4-1-2-2-1 shown earlier in this thread) so Poulson, Meireles and Stevie all play (with license for either / both to go forward) or we stick to two in CM (4-1-1-3-1).

I'm more than happy to see no DM and a SG / Meireles MF at home or against easier opposition but we will need a DM away against tricky teams (Birmingham this Sunday) or against top teams, home or away.

Re: Birmingham Away

Yup, we won't see Meireles and Gerrard as a central pairing, very rarely anyway. It'll be Poulsen, (with Lucas as back up) alongside Meireles or Gerrard.

Re: Birmingham Away

I think you'll see a line up like the one against Arsenal.

Poulsen

Meireles Gerrard

That depends on how Meireles turns out. He was initially described as a DM but recent reports seem to suggest he's more of a box-to-box kind. If Meireles is a strong enough tackler and covers good ground, I could see the Meireles-Shelvey partnership happening at a later point in the season.

Re: Birmingham Away

Interesting: This is the 50th League game between these teams at Birmingham. In the previous 49, Birmingham have won 21 while Liverpool won 15.

Re: Birmingham Away

It's a new look team for us and Birmingham are dogged opponents difficult to look beyond a draw.

Re: Birmingham Away

I've got a feeling that a win against Birmingham could somewhat ignite a winning-streak.

We are in need of a positive experience away from home and could we get this at a difficult ground like St. Andrews I'd be very optimistic on behalf of our upcoming games too.

I say let's go at them from the off and address the game like a 'must win'. I'd love that.

Re: Birmingham Away

Heh, the ultimate kiss of death / jinx has been delivered.

THANKS KHL!

Re: Birmingham Away

We'll win and you'll all thank me later as we then go on a splendid winning-streak.
