Birmingham have bid eight million pounds for Liverpool forward Ryan Babel , according to a report in The Independent today.

Liverpool are expected to reject the offer as they are holding out for a fee close to 12 million pounds as they look to recoup the 11.75 million pound fee they paid for Babel.

The 23-year-old Dutch has international has long voiced his displeasure at Anfield where he has failed to live up to his promise in two seasons at the club.

Manager Rafa Benitez is eager to sell Babel to bring in new players to Liverpool to freshen up the squad after a difficult first half of the 2009/2010 season.

Liverpool have been linked with Maxi Rodriguez and Marouane Chamakh today whilst Andrea Dossena seems set for a move to Napoli.

Ryan Babel has made 12 appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

The offer from Birmingham is seen as a statement of intent from new owner Carson Yeung to back the club’s excellent start on their return to the Premier League.

Swathes of mediocrity interspersed with moments of brilliance. Time to get rid.

Sell ! Sell ! Sell !

stop shouting so loudly. it will frighten off the buyers!

Just saying, I could give a toss TBH but there's plenty of people who don't like discussions on the same thing split across threads.

I really don't want him to stay in the Premiership. That said, if a good enough offer comes in (and 8M isn't at all that bad), we should take it as Rafa just doesn't fancy him at all. It's a shame as at the very least, he should have been a good squad player for us.

Looks like we might be able to scrape together about 15M from player sales - if we do sell Babel - so that might be positive news in terms of incoming players. That money simply has to be reinvested in the squad.

Oops - thanks Fallon I missed that. Must have been the thread title.

I think we all fans should shout NOOOOOO to every potential deals for Babel, Voronin and Dossena 😉
(so that buyers will think they have a GREAT deal)

I still fear for the Babel backlash if we sell him to a premiership club. If he plays week in week out on the right then he will gain confidence and will hurt teams. I'd rather sell him back to Holland if we could raise a similiar fee. 8 million is a decent wedge back for him.

He could just as easily just do nothing if we sold him.
I know there is always the fear that players we get rid of will come back to haunt us but how often does it happen?

Either way its clear he won't do anything for us (shame because I still think he's a good player) so he may as well go. Its what we get instead that worries me more than what he does after he's gone.

We want 12, they've bid 10. If we recieve a bid in the region of 10 mill we should sell him asap.

I'm not to sure he'd go there, but you'll never know.

Hopefully a signing like Elia or Turan - someone to get excited about.

Babel looked an exciting prospect before we got him though didn't he?

Would Turan be too good to be true in this window?

If we sell Voro, Doss and Babel and get in Turan and Maxi I would be very very happy. Even happier if we managed to get one of Saha and RVN.

so brum can afford to make an 8 million pound signing in jan but we cannot.

Didn't the new owner promise 25m for a january transfer kitty for the blues?

From what McCleish has been saying, they'll add a couple to the squad - if that includes Babel for 8-10m I'd be happy.

Yes, but one whom others (notably Wenger) had scouted but left alone. I always had a nagging doubt about that signing and I wasn't the only one.

Someone on RAWK claim we're after McGeady, and that Dalgleish has been sent to Glasgow on scouting trips.

Don't know if it BS or not, just thought I'd pass the info.

McGeady's good in Scotland, but he might turn out a bit like Gonzales in terms of end result. I've heard Brum are after him too.

McGeady's been mentioned before. The King's involvement is a new one on me though.

I can't make up my mind about McG. When I've seen him on TV he's looked a decent player, but a number of posters who've seen more of him apparently don't rate him. As for the King, I love the guy (unquestionably our greatest ever player IMO) but he did sign the likes of Jimmy Carter and LFC's All-Time Donkey, Nicky Tanner. ???

But has he got pace? Please God can we have one, just one pacy player on the wing (any wing)?

He is quick, in a Crazylegs sort of way. He is very good at going past people but his delivery/shot can be pretty poor (see reports on the Old Firm game at the weekend, where McGeady was as culpable as any for failing to take advantage of utter dominance).

Bit like a younger Aaron Lennon then?

I know nothing about this lad.

Now then, Jules. Add Barnes, Beardsley, McMahon etc to that list 🙂

Very true. Thanks for restoring my perspective. 8)

He's more of a goal threat than Lennon (in Scotland this is, of course). He's more like a raw McManaman.

if he's anything like lennon then fucking sign him. i've never even heard of him. i would like more british players, though.
