Betcha you say Spain.

As I live here, I'll say Spain. Although I do think that it is a very open tournament. If Spain win, the country will be on the piss for a week.

So we're in agreement then. England's achilles heel is its centre-halves, goalkeeper, attack and inability to keep the ball or control games.
Nope.

It's the fact that England's players are drawn almost exclusively from the working classes.
Oooooh, please elaborate.

Yea, Capello is England's best hope of finding a way to hide the team's shortcomings. I don't think it'll be enough though, England aren't good enough at keeping the ball.
Spot on.

Spain BTW.

It's not that complicated, just that England narrows down the pool of players by making it difficult / unattractive for middle class youngsters to stick it out at football.

England's obvious Achilles heel is the goalkeeper, surely?
The goalkeeper position is a problem, but I think the real Achilles heal is the lack of a decent centre forward (or perhaps the fact that we won't pick someone who is at least half suited to the job *and* can score goals).
Don't you think Capello will pick Rooney on his own upfront? I would, after watching him do it for Man Utd all season. It's true that England don't have a decent replacement for him though.

Talented striker, made to play alone up front, but has injury problems and no decent back up. Why does this all sound so familiar?
i don't. Nation of bottlers and no manager will fix that. There's no decent width to the squad so everything would be central which would be too easy to snuff out of attacks. Great talent in the middle, but as shown with us and the mancs before, close down gerrard/rooney then nothing will happen

I think in Capello England has a very good trump card. He will find some way to negate the lack of width on the flanks. England will probably grind out the results and win it in a 'boring' style.

Capello is a fantastic manager, and probably will set out to win in a boring style, but against creativity and drive i wonder if we'll cope

I don't see why not to be honest. Most of the players now play or have played for pragmatic managers and will know how to grind out results. I think Capello will know how to get the best out of whatever XI he puts out. Also, I think the majority of English players will benefit from their clubs being knocked out of Europe early.

I know. They always seem to flatter to deceive. Well, I've always kept one eye on England during major tournaments since Singapore is an ex-British colony. All the best!

I'd be surprised if he did. We've tried Rooney up front on his own for England before and it wasn't particularly successful. He's grown as a player since then, sure, but United are simply much better at supporting him than Engand are and international sides are better defensively than a lot of the Premiership dross he's destroyed on his own this season.

The problem this leaves us with is that we will try and fit Gerrard and Lampard into the midfield unbalancing it in the process and then partner some average striker with Rooney. So neither of our attacking units will be functioning quite as well as they might.

There are several reasons that the Gods will ensure France win this tournament.

1. They cheated to get to the final
2. Even their own fans don't seem to like them.
3. Several senior players seem to be embroiled in some sort of sordid sex scandal.
4. Their manager is widely regarded as the worst international coach at the WC.
5. Nobody seems to want them to win.

This is quite apart from the footballing reasons... Malouda, Benzema, Ribery, Henry, Anelka, Evra, Gourcuff, Gallas, Diarra, Diaby, Abidal, Nasri and others.

If I had to pick ONE team only as my safe bet I'd opt for Torres or Messis but France is my outsider.

Germany will probably go far as well. As per.
