It seems pretty clear now that Rafa considers that Johnson is a better RB and is at least as versatile as Arbeloa. I also think Spearing and/or Darby will be the backup.
Degen?
Possibly but I hope not
Why Jack? You haven't seen him play in the Premiership.
Why do I get the impression you're having a laugh?
No mate, I'm not having a laugh at all.
We haven't seen him tested. We have no proof that he is not good enough to be our back up RB just yet.
When/If he gets skinned by some nomark winger then we can all rejoice.
Until I see him play for us, and be tested by a decent, trickey winger I don't see how he can be written off.
I saw him play a few times in the Bundesliga and he was gash, a showoff who was happy to bomb forward but panicked when someone ran at him.  Borussia supporters on their websites were made up about selling him.  I've also seen excerpts of his contribution to one or two of our pre-season games and been distinctly underwhelmed then too.  The idea that he "hasn't been tested" does not hold water.  It will take a miracle for him to play better in an even harder league than he came from.

yes I do, they have Salgado, Marcello and Drente there, neither are very good or clever defensively. I think Pellegrini will play Arbeloa left back and he'll combine with Ronaldo

Ok Im happy to accept that.

My main point is though, that we are better off with Johnson than Arbeloa, and basically have the same cover in that position
Your main point is a no-brainer. You won't find anyone who will disagree with you on that score.
I just wish we could have got more money for him. He's Spain's first choice RB, Real have got a fucking bargain.

That has rarely been a consideration for them in the past. I think the superior attacking strengths of the others will ultimately win the day. Arbeloa offers very little going forward, and that will bother the gung-ho, champagne football loving Madrid faithful.

Anyone think he might even play centre back for them?
If so then Real will do themselves no favours. He was really really poor whenever we played him in central.

Personally I don't think we'll miss Arbeloa but I could of course be proved very wrong.

It's just their attitude to defence in general. They seem to think that if a player can defend they can defend anywhere, and given he's played their before at Depor, I wouldn't be surprised.

Real Madrid have hardly been shy of coughing up this summer though eh?
Lets not compare Arbeloa to the other players they've signed.
12 months left, he's not a big name signing...

Pellegrini likes boring defenders who can defend. Ramos might even be on the bench if he doesn't buck his ideas up

How the fuck have they managed to get him for the diminutive sum of 3.5m?
SSN referred to pounds rather than euros. If they're right, that's just about acceptable IMO given the alternative of losing him for free this time next year. That many euros wouldn't have persuaded me to sell him, but what we don't know is how badly - and quickly - we need the cash.

True, if it means the extra cash needed to cough up for silva, then i'm all for it.

What really worries me is the lack of cover at RB. if johnson gets injured, our options are degen and darby.

3.5m? Dear me. If Arbeloa had any class, he would insist Madrid pay at least 5m for him, considering what we've done for his career in particular.
I hope he flops, misses out on the World Cup and ends his career playing for the Spanish equivalent of Scunthorpe.

Yes, because players dictate their transfer fees all the time.

Seriously, I wonder which planet people are on sometimes.

It appears the club have given Ian Cotton a break to cope with his high work load

Liverpool today confirmed they have reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Alvaro Arbeloa to the La Liga side.
A Liverpool spokesman said: "We have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for the transfer of the player, subject to him completing a medical."

Which is exactlay as it was last season when Arbeloa was injured.

Now, however, we have a much better player in Johnson

Are some people silly on here? We also have Carra as backup too. Who knows we may even bring in someone too.

The potential sale of Arbeloa, Alonso & Dossena must mean something is in the pipeline, we wouldn't sell 3 first team players without something up our sleeve.

What she said. In addition to that we got him extremely cheap and he did a very good job. I think Madrid is a bad career move for him to make, but that's his choice and I have no gripe with him wanting to move to his home country and wanting another crack at La Liga. I hope he plays brilliantly there and Madrid win nothing (along with Ronaldo breaking his leg).

3.5M Euros or Pounds?

Either way, they've gotten him well on the cheap. I don't expect him to be first choice there for long though - he'll end up a squad player.

It's painfully ironic that two players who were part of the side that absolutely thumped Real Madrid last season are now so desperate to join them. I know there's new money and big new players but it still grates. One was a Real discard, the other is a fecking BASQUE! 'What attracted you to the multi-millionaire...?'

I think most players would jump at the chance to play in that team with some of the worlds best players if they're called so it's not a surprise, regardless of how shit Real have been they're still one of the top clubs in Spain and in the CL every year, pay top wages etc etc. And yes I still think we'll beat them in the CL if we meet them, hopefully in the final.

our job is to ensure players are on longer contracts than 3 years (in the case of Arbeloa, another mistake) and to make sure we get good fees

yes we do and we're lucky that some of them wouldnt join them for different reasons. also Madrid is a lot sunnier than Liverpool. There are a lot of attractions and players want to go there, only very few don't.

we will do them again because Rafa's tactics and system is priceless, no matter who they or City buy we will remain competitive

Degen's sh!te, Darby's not ready and - unlike last season - we now know Carra doesn't feel he can do it at fullback any more. Wind your neck in.
