3.5m? Dear me. If Arbeloa had any class, he would insist Madrid pay at least 5m for him, considering what we've done for his career in particular.
I hope he flops, misses out on the World Cup and ends his career playing for the Spanish equivalent of Scunthorpe.
Yes, because players dictate their transfer fees all the time.

Seriously, I wonder which planet people are on sometimes.
Who said anything about all the time?

I've seen a few players sign extensions/new contracts, only to be sold a month later. They sign those contracts with a minimum release fee because they appreciate the interests of the selling club, and want to get a decent fee for that said club knowing that they'll still go anyway. (and with the best wishes/appreciation of the club).

Instead, Arbeloa will probably sign with Madrid for 3.5m and pocket a 3m signing on fee himself.

It's painfully ironic that two players who were part of the side that absolutely thumped Real Madrid last season are now so desperate to join them. I know there's new money and big new players but it still grates. One was a Real discard, the other is a fecking BASQUE! 'What attracted you to the multi-millionaire...?'

What he said in a nutshell...

Yeah, I'm struggling to get to grips with the attraction of Real either... I mean, aside from the city, history, stadium, fame, top players and likely honours to follow... it's really quite bizarre.

I agree with Rage.
Not the anti-rafa bile. The 'we shouldnt be selling Arbeloa' bit.

I also agree with Mac that if its 4m euro we are being humped.
He's the 'now' first choice Spanish Left back and hes still young.
Id be asking 8 to 10m for him and if they dont want to pay he can go for free next year 4m euro isnt fucking worth selling a good versatile player for. Especially given the question marks over Johnson, Degen, Insua, Dossena and Aurelio.
Its shite business.
I'm amazed that anyone sees this as good business.

We're pretty short staffed at the back this year.

If I had a choice between, my club recieving £3.5m and myself getting a nominal sign on fee. Or my club recieving 3.5m and myself recieving 3m I must admit I'd opt for option b. But I'm crazy like that.

Is it Arby's fault that the club yet his contract run down? No. So if he had a nightmare couple of reasons he would have left on a free going to play for some lowly Spanish side not getting paid much. But he has had a good season so he is entitled to reap the rewards of us not shining him up or selling him sooner. No?
I dont think were short as such as short on quality.
The Finnan, Hyppia, Carragher, Riise axis seems long gone.
We were always going to have to do this eventually and to be fair, we have really developed a back line that can fire for years IF it turns out these lads are good enough.
Pepe - 25
Insua - 20
Darby - 19
Johnson - 24
Degen - 24
Agger - 24
Skrtel - 22
thats fucking great for the future but you have to feel letting Arby go now has REALLY not helped and will have put a massive amount of pressure on Carragher.

We know both Skrtel and Agger will miss time due to injury, and the lack of a reliable 4th choice will mean Carragher is going to have to play more than he ideally would.

I don't expect to see Degen play this season again, can't say how Darby might get on but he doesn't look like a Premiership player at the moment.

Insua - I still have doubts about him and you can't rely on Aurelio to ever be fit.

It's mental to sell Arbeloa under the circumstances (a title challenge), regardless of how many years are left on his contract.
Are some people silly on here? We also have Carra as backup too. Who knows we may even bring in someone too.
Degen's sh!te, Darby's not ready and - unlike last season - we now know Carra doesn't feel he can do it at fullback any more. Wind your neck in.
Of which Degen and Darby will probably play after Johnson and Carragher. Stop being a whiney little chutney ferret k

Try again in English. If that's too much for you, Babelfish might help.

What part of me saying degen and darby won't play next season did you not understand fucktard?

Sorry to dissapoint you but it's not so easy to type the queens English on an iPod after a few red wines

once again madrid fuck us over with a transfer fee.

i await to see alonso sold for 20 million headlines sometime soon.

no way would we be able to buy an english international fullback for 3.5 million. infact we just paid 17 million for one that is yet to be proven at this level.

It's sickening how we have to bend over for them like we're bloody Coventry city.

Whereas United (with 2 less european cups) get a bit of respect from them, and manage to sell them a fcuking washed up Heinze for 9m.. a declining Van Nistelrooy for 15m.. and then obviously, 80m for Ronaldo.

Not particularly arsed about Arbeloa going, he covers most positions well but doesn't excel in any. We've lost an adequate RB and signed the best in the League, I'll take that any day of the week.

I do think Arbeloa is a good signing for Madrid though. Cheap and half decent which is something most of their defenders aren't. I know we think he's shit at CB but I bet he's better than Pepe (18mil) and Ramos (20mil). He'll walk into their team if they actually pick players on merit and not status/price.

As for our squad strength, if the likes of Degen and Darby cannot cover in the games against the many cannon fodder teams in the Prem, then our scouts/youth staff should be sacked. It's not asking much.

I think the club didn't worry about the contract because they didn't anticipate him wanting to leave immediately.

Personal issues cropped up,me thinks.

I'm mainly furious about the money, but once he'd decided to leave we were always fighting a losing battle.

Please tell that to a Basque. I doubt you'll get a 'LOL'.

Don't get me wrong, Keni is a good football forum poster but he does talk through his arse sometimes.

City = Madrid ? There's loads of other great cities to live in too. Barcelona is a cauldron of culture too if a player has the choice to choose between Real and Barca.

History = ? Oh yeah I'm gonna join a club cos of it's history. 'Doh. That will attract some but only a sentimentalist fool would assume that's high on the list of reasons to join Real in the first place. And btw, Anfield has an incredible history too...so your argument's fcuked from the start.

Stadium = ? Oh yeah, I would leave Anfield cos Bernabeu is bigger and the grass is greener. The same patch of grass that Xabi and Arbeloa stamped their feet on and made Real's defenders quiver and stumble onto. It's also the same patch where Xabi and co probably spat on.

Fame = ? It dont matter which fcuking club I play for, if I'm paid a gazillion pounds a week I'd be famous even if I play for Accrington Stanley so stfu. And if I ain't, I'd give my agent the flippin boot.

Top players = ? Ok I'll give you that but seriously would you join a club cos all the top players play there ? Fair enough, I might. Many might. But then again, I'm sure the thought of the recent failure of the Galactico project with the same president in charge would have carried some weight as well.

Likely honours to follow = ? What likely honours ? Unless you're so desperate to win the La Liga, whom Real have won like once in the last 5 years or so, then yeah maybe Real is your next best stop but oh wait....you forgot about the much improved Barcelona who won the treble last season being your greatest challengers, so nothing's a walkover. And the previous Galacticos were miles better, all legendary players in their own right - Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, R. Carlos, and other good players such as Beckham, Owen, Mcmanaman and etc....yet they couldn't win the CL (ok Macca did but you get the point)

Also, would you like to go through every season not knowing if the manager you've grown attached and accustomed to, might be sacked cos he only won the La Liga and not the treble or whatever ?

Arbeloa has done pretty well for us. The signing of Johnson, coupled with the fact Real Madrid want him means that his decision to leave is entirely understandable. I wish him well. The fee is irrelevant.
So you dont think theres an attraction playing for the most succesful team in Europe, and the richest club in the world in one of europes most beautiful cities for a kings ransom?
Hmmm!
For the record Real have won 2 of the last 3 League titles not 1 in 5, and the Galacticos won TWO european cups. 1 at the start and then the Zidane final in Glasgow. They also won 2 League titles and a Kings cup. I agree with some of.....actually no i dont, your talking out of your arse, Madrid is, was and always will be a MASSIVE draw for any top footballer.

Heh, you can pick each point apart if you like, but when you put them all together, you get Real Madrid - we all know full well they are almost unique in terms of the profile they have. We may have thrashed them last season, but they're still one of the biggest clubs in the world and they are still, as we've seen, more than capable of poaching the worlds best away from their clubs. They are a circus, as many clubs in La Liga are (see: Real Betis, A.Madrid, Valencia for example), but it doesn't stop top players from wanting to play there or from winning trophies.

It's easy to see both sides of this, but through the course of this saga, I generally feel we've ignored the attraction of playing for Real Madrid and concentrated far too much on the supposed bitterness between Rafael Benitez and the player.
