Benitez plays down player scuffle
by Toby Davis , 17 May 2009
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has shrugged off the on-pitch scuffle between Reds team-mates Jamie Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa as a sign of a winning mentality.
The pair squared up in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over West Brom with Carragher giving the Spaniard a piece of his mind after The Baggies had a chance to reduce the two-goal deficit.
Referee Martin Atkinson gave both players a stern talking to after Xabi Alonso had managed to drag them apart, but rather than criticise the pair for coming to blows, Benitez said it was evidence of a fierce will to win.
“You could see Carragher and Arbeloa because we wanted a clean sheet and they were a little bit nervous,†said Benitez.
"Arbeloa was going forward and then we had some problems in defence. We wanted to protect Pepe Reina because now I think he has 20 clean sheets - Van der Sar has 21.
"It's a positive message in terms of the mentality of the team. We wanted to show character and a winning mentality.
"We were looking for some targets: 83 points, a club record in The Premier League; 13 victories away - also a record. We also wanted to score goals and keep a clean sheet and for us I think this guarantees second position. We also wanted to stay as close as possible to United."
Liverpool’s victory over The Baggies took their points tally to 83 for the season, a record in The Premier League for The Reds.
But it was not enough to secure the title and Benitez says in the end his squad was not as strong as Manchester United’s.
"United have quality - especially on the bench," he added. "Against us they had Scholes, Giggs and Berbatov on the bench. You can change two or three players easily.
"We have less of these kind of players, though I am really pleased with my squad and really proud of what we've done this season.
"I will say congratulations to Manchester United - it's a good club, a big club."

Very generous of Rafa to say this, although disappointing for the anti-Rafa brigade who pore over his every utterance to find fault.
As to the Carra-Arby incident, whilst it's right for the senior player to point out mistakes made, Carra let himself down by overreacting in an embarrassing way. Arbeloa was right to take offence and look to defend himself.
Incident best forgotten.

The disappointment is with the defeat, not with the conceding thereof.
