Xabi acted like a leader I thought. Gerrard should've been in there.

Agreed.

Cos Carragher is going to knock you out in the carpark..
The most worrying part of that was not Arbeloa and Carra but the fact that first Xabi and then Agger came in and went straight for Carra's throat followed by Alonso really taking him to task after the final whistle.

All is not well with either Carra and a few others or maybe there's a bit of an us vs them in the Spain / England culture.
They slowed that right down, it was the correct reaction from Xabi, he went for the aggressor, and whilst keeping him at arms length... Pointed to his temple as if to say "THINK".

Agger was merely a bystander by that point.

After the final whistle you could see Carra was still riled by it, vice captain or not, was not the best reaction. They may make up later on, but I seriously think Arby's number will be up in the summer.

Alonso was the player who came out of that with the most credit, certainly.

There is a dressing room divide with the Spanish players, that much was been documented bith in the press & in the rumour mill, but it's more of a social thing, the players dont mix together too much socially, rather than an out & out divide, but obv that means the Spanish players are closer.

xabi looked like he wanted to knock carra the fuck out, is he best mates with arbeloa or something?
Yeah, there was some real aggression in Xabis face when he went at Carra there.

He didn't look happy after the final whistle either.

Both players have made mistakes these past 2 months.
One because he's knackered having played every single game.
The other because he's simply an average defender.
One is the one of most important player in the club.
The other is just a good squad player.

RB is not our priority in the summer though
Mostly right, yep.

all out punch up with the english v the spanish

spanish
pepe
arbeloa
xabi
torres

english
gerrard
carra

it would be a blood bath 😉

Yep, real "aggression" in Xabi's actions there.

He and Agger really "went for Carra's throat".

Great thread.

I loved the incident personally.

I think Carra might well accept the offer that Rafa gave to him not so long ago.

I want Arby to stay, but he was clearly not giving 100% effort today.

Nah, its all good mate. I'm sure Alonso always looks like that when he's dealing with people he likes/has respect for. :🙂

He asked Carra if he'd like to start fights with the under performing members of our team in the dressing room.

Apparently he got the argies to kick it off in a similar manner back in his Valencia days.

I thought it was a bit worrying. Carra probably was pissed off about United winning the league yesterday, but I've rarely if ever seen him blow a fuse like that on the field. We need his leadership qualities and, yep, sometimes his bollockings, but that was OTT. It was embarrassing and unprofessional.

Maybe a while ago:
“Carra, you know my idea. Alonso will take my job, his mentality is bad, no? Take care of him Carra and after we see about your contract no?â€
“Feck offâ€

This evening:
“Boss, about Alonso....

There's some real bollocks been spoken here about Xabi and Agger wanting to have a go at Carrer because of some "press-driven" dressing room split.

Jamie was wound up, Arbeloa just stood up and said "and what etc.." Jamie went mental (and he shouldn't have), Xabi and Agger tried to cool him down/stop him getting himself sent off.

Oh Christ. Oh dear Christ Almighty.

Carra was out of order with his reaction. Xabi showed what a class act being first in to split it up and then addressing it with Carra again at the final whistle.

I've reacted like that once when playing footy against one of my best mates, and it was borne purely out of frustration. I reckon it was the same for Carra - he'd had to bail Arbeloa out a few times previous and that was probably the straw that broke the camel's back. However, I've noticed in the past few weeks Carra bawling other players out. It deffo needs addressing as there is no way its good for team morale.

Mate hopefully our players are not that soft, as to let something like that effect team morale.

I'd actually encourage that sort of behaviour a bit more, but preferably behind closed doors.

I've heard Souness in the past talk about how there were quite often rucks on the training ground.

The key, though, is that these things happen behind closed doors, as you say.

Its all very well being competitive but Carra has made himself look a bit of a tit. Plus, now we all know what will inevitably be focused on in our next game.

Yeah i agree with you mate. We need 2 RB's and if Johnson could come in as 1st choice with Arby as back up, then that would be just about perfect for me.

Benitez plays down player scuffle
by Toby Davis , 17 May 2009

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has shrugged off the on-pitch scuffle between Reds team-mates Jamie Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa as a sign of a winning mentality.

The pair squared up in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over West Brom with Carragher giving the Spaniard a piece of his mind after The Baggies had a chance to reduce the two-goal deficit.

Referee Martin Atkinson gave both players a stern talking to after Xabi Alonso had managed to drag them apart, but rather than criticise the pair for coming to blows, Benitez said it was evidence of a fierce will to win.

“You could see Carragher and Arbeloa because we wanted a clean sheet and they were a little bit nervous,†said Benitez.

"Arbeloa was going forward and then we had some problems in defence. We wanted to protect Pepe Reina because now I think he has 20 clean sheets - Van der Sar has 21.

"It's a positive message in terms of the mentality of the team. We wanted to show character and a winning mentality.

"We were looking for some targets: 83 points, a club record in The Premier League; 13 victories away - also a record. We also wanted to score goals and keep a clean sheet and for us I think this guarantees second position. We also wanted to stay as close as possible to United."

Liverpool’s victory over The Baggies took their points tally to 83 for the season, a record in The Premier League for The Reds.

But it was not enough to secure the title and Benitez says in the end his squad was not as strong as Manchester United’s.

"United have quality - especially on the bench," he added. "Against us they had Scholes, Giggs and Berbatov on the bench. You can change two or three players easily.

"We have less of these kind of players, though I am really pleased with my squad and really proud of what we've done this season.

"I will say congratulations to Manchester United - it's a good club, a big club."

CARRA EXPLAINS ARBELOA EXCHANGE
Paul Eaton 17 May 2009
Jamie Carragher has insisted Pepe Reina's bid for this season's Golden Glove award was behind his on-field disagreement with Alvaro Arbeloa during Liverpool's 2-0 victory at West Brom.
Goals in each half from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt secured victory for the Reds at The Hawthorns - and ended the Baggies' stay in the Premier League.

West Brom fought hard for a way back into the game in the latter stages, and created a number of chances which had Carragher seething with frustration.

"We can't win the league now but there are a number of targets we can aim for," said Carragher after the game. "We want to keep a clean sheet and we want Pepe to have a chance of the Golden Glove for the third season running. Pepe is one behind Van der Sar now and there's a chance Van der Sar won't play next week, so we wanted to make sure he got a clean sheet today.

"To be honest we were a bit lackadaisical in our defending all through the game and they had too many chances.

"Maybe we took it a bit too easy and let them attack us too much, but that was one of the toughest games I've played in all season. We go all over Europe playing top teams and we play against the best sides in this country, but that was one of the hardest games we've had."

Carragher admits he's disappointed Liverpool's title chances have been ended for another season, but he's already looking forward to the prospect of making another challenge next year.

"It's hard to win the Premier League because our top four sides plus Barcelona probably make up the best five sides in Europe," he said. "That's the challenge we face.

"You can look at the statistics from this season and it's impressive that we've only lost two games and scored lots of goals, but United have got more points than us and credit to them because that's what matters.

"We have to make sure we finish second now and win our last game of the season next weekend."

Carra was interviewed on 5 live and basically admitted the incident was due to his frustration with missing out on the league.

He needs to sort himself out, that was some silly shit there.
