The basket being the Europa League.

I am not sure of the permutations but what are our chances of getting into Europe if that fails? I believe we need to finish 7th to clinch a place?

As we showed in 2013-14, and Leicester are demonstrating this year, if we fail to get into the Champs league, a year without European footy might be a blessing in disguise. There is no way Leicester would have managed this title tilt with the demands of mid-week footy, and we clearly benefitted massively in BR's nearly season from a lack of European football.

Agree with all of that. The heffalump in the room, though, is the fact that winning the Europa pot gets us into the Champions League. If we go out of that we maybe should use the rest of this Prem season as prep for the next one.

Yeah, it would be tremendous if we do that, obviously. Though it might not be great news for next year's league prospects.

7th gets us into the EL playoff rounds only if the Mancs win the FA Cup and also qualify for Europe via their league placing (the latter is very likely to happen). Otherwise (they win it but finish outside the top 6), or if Watford, Palace or Everton win the FA Cup, then there's no European football for finishing 7th.

If you don't mind being in the EL (I don't mind, I know some do - to each his own), then finishing 5th or 6th is better because that puts us straight into the group stage and avoids the pesky playoff round that occurs during the pre-season.

I had an Arnold Bennett once. Beautiful thing. Whoever Arnold was, he was a cunt to be admired. Treat yourself.
