I love how nobody ever mentions them winning the European Cup.

It's like it was all too weird for it to happen, so everyone just keeps quiet. It'll become a myth by the end of this decade.
Probably because they (I presume you are referring to Greece) haven't ever won the European Cup.

And, yes, I know I'm being a pedant.

Well we can't follow any of the big boys and Holland even though they've never won a WC they are one of the favourites as ever.

I want us to follow Greece.

They remind me alot of Liverpool under Rafa.
Then why would YOU support them?
Because for all my "realistic" views on Liverpool I still support them 100% and I love the hard working less skilled under dog always have.
It's a shame you weren't alive when we were winning everything.

That's a good point abuot Denmark; I've always had a soft spot for them, but can you imagine what KHL would be like if they did well..brr...
All over the fucking place.

That's where I'll be.

Ivory Coast.

Just once I'd like to cheer Drogba as he hurls himself to the ground writhing in excruciating agony to win a free-kick/pen.

They flunked in the African Cup but remain a team stocked with European-based players of good calibre. They're in a group with Portugal and Brazil (and Korea) so even if they go out after the group stages we'd have had some entertainment - they'd be the perfect antidote to a year of watching Rafa's compact army. First game up against Portugal could see our boys off to a flyer.

Just imagine the endless fun we'd have with Les Elephants (tusk, tusk etc)
That's a great idea Buddha, I'll go for Ivory Coast.

Go E-L-E-P-H-A-N-T-S go

I was speaking with my Irish mates last night (and our token French friend Patrice) and i ran this idea past them that we support mexico. It was met by a very enthusiastic response and we immediately checked to see when the France v Mexico game is. Unfortunately it's at 1:30pm on a Wednesday BUT we have all decided to take that day off and swan around Didsbury in our Poncho's and Sombrero's before retiring to the pub to watch our glorious Mexico beat the chinchilla's (it's a rodent isn't it?) out of the French. I have a horrible feeling Tequila will play a part in the proceedings.

My real preference would be with a side that we have zero allegiances to, and can all get behind simultaneously. If we pick Denmark, then it's just KHL going nuts really, and it's loses all shamwow factor.

Mexico, Paraguay, Nigeria, Korea... That sorta shit really.
Yeah, I'd just quite like a european team.
Anyway, WTF! You're English!

Go support your own bunch of losers.
Well you're from Northern Ireland, so you should support your ruling nation too.
*scarpers*
seriously, I just like underdogs.
North Korea then, join me.
Poor guys are cut off from the outside world.

My vote goes out to Mexico, Nigeria or Chile.

I'm not going to cheer for Drogba.

HA!

Bad Buddha.

Where's the option "Anyone England are playing?"

That'll win hands down with the Irish, Welsh and Scots... 😉

I would be down for Paraguay or Uruguay. I guess I could do Mexico, if that was the consensus of the masses.

If the rationale to choosing a team is that they must have no chance of winning the tournament and are largely unpopular, then I would have to choose England then.

Serious question - why does Ryan support The Republic of Ireland when he's from Northern Ireland ?

I'm just interested and I would not appreciate sarcasm, thank you.

Almost on that topic, is football the only sport in which there is a Northern Ireland team ?

In rugby there's the four province Ireland team, but in the likes of athletics etc Northern Irish athlete's would be under the UK / Irish banner. Can't think of any others myself

I know going back some fifteen/twenty years ago the Northern Ireland team seemed to have attracted a particularly loyalist following and seemed to align itself with that part of the community. Therefore I guess there may have been little attractive about supporting the team if you were from the other side of the sectarian divide.

I believe that things have changed significantly now, with the team/association trying to be more inclusive of all so hopefully the idea of supporting the team might be attractive to all sides of the community.

That said, that is pretty much a simplistic analogy from a purely sporting viewpoint and peoples political views would have a bearing on their teams support.

You will probably get a more accurate analogy from some of the Northern lads to be fair but you will find that really, it is not that simple an answer.

The cricket and hockey teams are island of Ireland too I think.
