£15 millions is what he's worth, but we'll be paying them an extra amount of money just because he's English.
Tbh I'd rather just pay £15 million for Konoplyanka and save between 5-10 million.

Ha, that's a great point well made Jack. Why do people get so wound up over the money? If he's a player we have identified we need just buy him, that's what "big clubs" do.

He won't have the same role as Konoplyanka though, will he?

We did that with Carroll and Downing, that's why.

Shall I tell you what will happen, rumours will start that Chelsea are to come along with a £30m bid and everyone will be whining like fuck that we must get him before they do, and why have they not got their own scouts etc etc

Sheer madness? You are having a laugh aren't you, it's hardly that.
How on earth does Dirk come into this bizarre comparison of either the player or the comparative markets.
He is worth what he is as he is one of the stand out players of the premier league, and is cementing his international place. Also for the reasons I outlined in my post about this transfer window.
Kuyt was a Liverpool example. I can give you 10 examples of players from last year's transfer window if you want. Players who've matched/bettered Lallana's production over the last 2 years and have gone for less than 15 million.

Lallana is nowhere worth 25 million. I'm amazed anyone can see that it'd make sense at that price.

As for your point about the transfer window, there are examples of wasteful expenditure in every window just as much as there are examples of excellent deals to be had if you're smart enough. I've made this point repeatedly over the years. There's value to be had every year in any transfer window. You just need to shop well.

And I'd say there's a fair difference between trusting Rodgers the manager and Rodgers the transfer market operator.

I thought you lot would have learned to trust Brendan over the course of the last two seasons, clearly not.

Yes I think on the whole we do, and the rest of the "transfer committee" but no one has a 100% record of getting it right. I think the price is high and we all know why. We have to get it right again this summer to maintain out place at the top table.

But do we need him? Especially if the price is high? I hate the stats argument but we have scored the most goals this season but are 7th on goals conceded. We need to get the right people at the right price or we will stand still and others will pass us. It's a cliche I know but I just feel it's so true for us right now.

Also I think I'm voicing the same concerns our board is, considering their stance on big money signing these past few years.
Why pay premium just because he's English?
The logical thing is to buy a foreign player who is just as good and cheaper. Maybe even younger.

But constant buying foreign, has it's own drawbacks too.

Exactly what I was supposed to say and we did pay too much for him even if he has improved.
How much do you think Henderson is worth now to the team and commercially you f - in reverse order - more than we paid and more than we can measure looking at the last two games he has been missing.

We didn't overspend on Henderson really though.
He's an excellent player who's improved hand over fist and will most likely be at the club for a while yet so he'll be more than worth his weight in gold when all is said and done.

I'd rather have both.

Go on then enlighten us on this shit dealing

His transfer record, though, is hard to have confidence in, partly because of some early dodgy targets and signings, partly because it's not clear who exactly has been making the signings the last few windows.

Personally I rate Lallana, but it's perhaps a bit of a personal bugbear of mine that stops me getting on board fully. I'm a bit obsessive about valuing players in relation to their age, specifically how many good years you get from them. Lallana at nearly 26 you would perhaps expect 6 from. Markovic, say, more like 12. I'd therefore be reluctant to pay any more than half of whatever I could sign Markovic for.

That's my only real objection. As a player I think he's great.
