88 vs 2019

I had a season ticket then and can confirm that this team would pork the 88 one right up its metaphorical shitbox

In which case the 88 team would surely put in a few tackles that will end the 19 team's careers.

The correct observation is that the teams competing for the title now are also Miles ahead of the teams 30 years ago. That has to be taken into account in terms of winning things.

I would expect the current team to win, but the game has moved on - fitness levels, pay scale etc. Comparing against standards of the time, the '88 team was breath-taking. They were like the Beatles.

Gene Hughes wreckons the game would have draw written all over it.

Well, we can't even think about this comparison until the season ends... If we're champions, it may be a fair question. If we're not, it dies right there.

For the record, in a one-off match, though I feel that this squad is fitter, tougher and stronger as a cumulative group of players, anybody who thinks that it'd be an easy win for Klopp's boys is loopy... Can you imagine a Barnes on TAA? Aldo on Lovren? Beardo buzzing around like he did, against our current back 4? Everybody not named Virgil would be torched at the back (though our FBs would also wreak havoc going forward).

I agree that 2019 would probably win it, but it might be 7-5 or some such nonsense. 🙂

Tell me if I'm wrong, but fitness and diet has changed a lot since the 80s. In today's standards Barnes, Beardsley and co would probably not be considered to be fit.

Our current team would definitely beat them but I'm guessing we're talking in relation to their opponents back then and their achievements.

Put the two teams on the field together exactly as they were in their respective heydays and of course the current team would be ahead in terms of fitness, but that isn't really the point (if there is a point) of such an exercise. The idea is to look at the two teams man for man and try to figure out which would win if they competed against one another with similar backgrounds in terms of training, diet and the rest. I happen to think the current team would still win, but it would be a close one IMO.
