With the number of centrebacks and no left back could we play the following

Jovanovic Torres

Maxi/Kuyt Cole Aquilani Gerrard Johnson

Agger Carragher Kelly/Wilson

Reina

3-5-2 is good system to have as back up.
We've used it in the past with decent results.
It shouldn't really ever be plan A though.

Someone posted a UEFA video of Hodgson recently, with him explaining why he always picks formations based on a back four. So no, I don't think we'll be playing 352.

I like the 3-5-2 system but I reckon we'd get raped on the counter attack by teams with pace and guile on the wings.

It's funny how people try to come up with new formations to accommodate every attacking/creative player in the club.
Last time we used the 3-5-2 formation effectively was during the Evans era with Mcateer and Rob Jones on the wings. We played some beautiful attacking football but we where very vunerable defensively.
I'd stick with the 4-2-3-1 or the 4-5-1 formation.

Name me one top European side that uses 3-5-2. There's your answer.

Attacking FBs - Yes
3 at the back - No.

I actually like the formation (I'm talking about 3-5-2 in general and not as it applies to us here at LFC). But, it's become obsolete now, mainly because a lot of teams play just one upfront, this tends to leave one of the CBs with little or nothing to do in the course of the game. That's one of the main reasons teams have moved away from it of late (even the Germans who didn't seem to know any other way to play at a time).

And the major deficiency in carlv's proposed line up is that there are no defensive minded midfielders in that line up. We'd be murdered by the opposition if we were playing like that.

Chelsea essentially does. The fullbacks push up very high on the pitch and the defensive midfielder (Essien or Mikel) functions very closely to the centrebacks.

When they've got the ball, yes. But formations are generally based on how the players line up when the opposition has the ball.

Ancelotti has spoken before of how he has that team essentially set up in a modified 3-5-2.

Fact is most talk of formations is highly semantic and is simply a matter of convenience (and often ignorance) for fans to discuss their teams. (Cf. "No, that's not a 4-5-1, it's a 4-5-3 in attack!" "You're stupid, it's a 4-2-3-1 with wide midfielders who push on", etc.)

They essentially have the same line-up at the back as we do ! Essien / Mikel as DM and a flat back four but with more attacking FBs than most teams - in no way or form can you describe that as 3 at the back and wing-backs.

Oops - just seen your subsequent post. However no matter how much it may be 'semantics' to debate formations that fact is they use recognised 'full-backs' with an attacking flair and Essien / Mikel have far more licence to attack, as DMs, than say Masherano had for us under Rafa.
