I dont think we should have dropped Mignolet. He was playing well.

Karius was terrible today.

It's true other keepers new to the league started by making similar mistakes. I guess though that the Enlightenment has passed goalkeeping coaches by. That movement encouraged people to believe that they could learn from the mistakes of their predecessors, avoid repeating them themselves, and, you know, progress. Maybe one day a rogue coach will have that light bulb moment: 'Hey, why don't I compile a sort of list of what, typically, new keepers do badly and then train any new ones not to do it? That would maybe stop them all looking amazed at what's unfamiliar to them!'

Quite why Karius has to flap on the job is a mystery. He should have been working on such things since he arrived at Melwood.

Every player has an off day and we shouldn't write off any player on the basis of one game.

I'm not sure anyone is writing him off yet. He was fucking shite today, and looked worse than Mignolet

That's not writing him off, that's an accurate reflection of his performance

Is Achterberg still "coaching" our keepers or has Klopp brought someone else in?

I just saw the highlights, and Karius looked bad. It looked like he was flinching at every shot that came his way. @manwithnoname , I think you was too kind. That performance was shocking.

So far his distribution looks slightly better and he looks marginally more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Hopefully we'll be able to find more positive things to say in the future . . . but given our proven track record in making goalkeepers shitter than they were when they joined us, I'm not gonna hold my breath

Get rid of John Achtenburg

Who plays against the cunts? Karius I guess....he's less shit.

Bring back Ward in Jan

He looked very shaky. Came for that last chance for Van Der Horny and then stopped halfway and ended in no mans land. Didn't come for one or two other crosses. God knows Ming was not my preference, but he looked better than Kare-bear.

Karius distribution is so far at about 87% while Mignolet is down at 74%.
His form and consistency for Mainz also indicates that he seldom makes mistakes that lead to goals:

Karius Career

8353 minutes, 10 errors, every 835 minutes

All LFC GK since 2011/12

18008 minutes, 32 errors, every 563 minutes

All EPL GK since 2011/12

360,861 minutes, 483 errors, every 747 minutes

That said. He has to improve his communication and decision making.

I'd keep him in goal against the Mancs. Ming has been shite for 3 years. We can let this kid get a chance to make a name for himself.

Mourinho will surely be targeting us with thos type of crosses in 2 weeks time. Loads of work to be done on the training pitch during the international break. No excuses as we know its coming.

Achterberg is very much still here. It's quite maddening to see a new keeper make the kind of mistakes that should have been worked on specifically before he was deemed ready for contention. Such is the negativity about Mignolet, some posters just won't judge performances by other keepers rationally. Karius could well turn out to be an excellent keeper but you don't just bung a new keeper into the side. Mignolet now knows he's got real competition, but Karius needs to know that he has the same. He can't flap his way through the next few months. He needs to work way harder in training now, and not just some lazy Achterberg routine but rather on a carefully selected number of technical issues, You can cut and paste old stats from another league all you like, and spout the kind of 'he needs time' cliches that only seem relevant when it suits you. Deal with the here and now - this is a crucial period of the season when we either set ourselves up for a long battle at the top, or fall behind the pack yet again. We can't be offering apprenticeships in the team. This is serious.

I'm with Gk.
I know what we get from Mignolet. Karius hasn't convinced me that he's better at all.

"Spout cliches when it suits you". So new players dont get the time to settle in? 2-3 flaps in 270 mins of football including the league cup and thats it? Enough time.
Yeah, the goalkeeper position is an important one and you have to be ready. But he looked more than ready in pre season. 3 seasons in the BL, voted the next best GK after Neuer so this isnt some 18 year old from South Yonkenmorth with no experience.

He's played in 3 games. 3 wins. He's obviously got some serious work to do and we know Klopp will adress those. But the few flaps he's had hasnt lead to a goal yet. And Klopp is a beliver of what happens on the training field. Its not like it cant be adressed.
Changing goalkeepers again now might not give a positive effect. The defence need stability and the goalkeepers confidence might be effected.

Ming wont improve us if he's selected again. He'll add worse distribution, the same flaping which has happened for 3 years and a higher number of defensive mistakes. Which we know will happen.

Stick with Karius.

Karius' confidence would be at least as much at risk from a poor performance against ManUre, with all the extra attention that would draw down on him. His shot-stopping hasn't been tested yet, you can bet whoever's in goal will get tested on his line by the Mancs and that's one area where Mignolet is a proven points-saver.

You're right that Klopp sets great store by what happens in training. That's exactly what he should do now as well. The keeper who trains better during the next fortnight should get the nod against the Scum.

Not sure it was lack of training. He looked downright nervous and, if the case, only time will heal (assuming he has the skills). Tough call though. Because errors will only increase his nerves. I think once he settles, he will be fine. How to get him settled is another question.

Friedel turned out to be a top keeper but I don't think anyone who saw him absolutely shattered playing for us at OT will ever be cavalier about selecting a keeper to play there. The fact that Mignolet wouldn't surprise anyone if he has a Dudek-style nightmare there is no reason to then adopt a blinkered optimistic attitude towards A.N. Other. The position at present is something that only rationally encourages anxiety and doubt.

Isn't Ming away with Belgium now? There may not be that much opportunity to compare them in training over the next 2 weeks.

Not sure about Karius, but I assume Mignolet is gone for the best part of two weeks on international duty. It is never good to loose all players for two weeks, but in regarding to the goatie situation it is really bad that we can't work with them now. On the other hand Achtenberg doesnt seem to improve them anyway, but still bad timing. I am glad we have those extra days after the internationals.

Give him time. He'll come good.

I think he will. But that's another matter. When it gets confused with who should be starting here and now, in very big games, that's when the discussion becomes incoherent. I'm sure Shankly thought Clemence would come good when he signed him in 1967 but he didn't make him number one until 1970. Obviously times have changed, but this issue won't elicit much beyond the standard of a girly argument about boy bands unless it gains a bit of focus and unemotional rigour. I really like Woodburn and think he'll come good, but I don't want him to start against the mancs, even if our main striker had an ugly face with a broken nose and a dodgy set of stats. Players need to earn the right to play for Liverpool. They shouldn't get people backing them because they're not someone else. This isn't Norwich.

I dont know why Mignolet was dropped. He was playing well.

Im sure Karius will be good (law of averages) but players used to have to earn their starting place through the ressies and the bench. I wish we were still that good.

I agree, can't really recall a single mistake he's done this season, but I guess the thought was, "let's not wait for him to make a mistake".

Yeah, the timing was a bit weird. Ming had been quite good in his last few games.
Klopp must have made up his mind before the season started.

He looks worse than Ming on crosses. Ming has become quite a good puncher of the ball, but Karius, thus far, looks rooted to his line. Yes Ming is not brilliant on crosses by any stretch but that was utterly grim fare yesterday. Obviously, he is better than Ming in terms of distribution (though he wasn't great yesterday) and this is why he's in. But when set piece goals are our particular achilles heel I wonder whether the improvement (incremental though it might be) of replacing Karius with Ming might be an idea.
