'Disgrace' in Lyon sparks £100m Reds rescue plan with Liverpool nearing Champions League exit
By John Edwards Last updated at 10:46 PM on 05th November 2009

Liverpool's hierarchy are piecing together a £100million rescue package to try to turn round a season that has been branded 'a disgrace' by one of their own players.

Anfield bosses hope to have the cash injection in place by January and will be eager to avoid any delays after keeper Pepe Reina turned on his own team-mates and berated their Champions League failings.

A 1-1 draw in Lyon has left Liverpool staring at a costly group stage elimination and Reina fumed: 'Disgracefully, it is not in our hands any more - we need Lyon to get something at Fiorentina.'
Co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have been courting potential investors in recent weeks and are now ready to press ahead with a rights issue of shares that would dilute their holding but, crucially, generate extra income of around £100m.

After being vilified by fans over alleged broken promises, the Americans view surrendering some of their power as a price worth paying for being able to kick-start their much-delayed stadium project and provide transfer funds for the January window.

It is understood managing director Christian Purslow has already had negotiations with interested parties and that Hicks and Gillett, while retaining a majority stake, are prepared to reduce their holding to around 35 per cent each to secure the necessary investment.
The rights issue has echoes of David Moores' appointment as chairman 18 years ago, when he bought over 50 per cent of the club for £12m, and heaps even more pressure on manager Rafa Benitez.

While building a new ground a stone's throw away at Stanley Park remains the priority for Hicks and Gillett, they are acutely aware of their squad's shortcomings and keen to release transfer funds in the New Year.

Whether Benitez will be trusted with them evidently depends on what happens between now and then. The promise of new investment could give Hicks and Gillett the financial muscle needed to dispense with their under-fire manager, even at a cost of £20m in compensation.
It is bound to be given serious consideration if Liverpool continue to falter and risk missing out on the Champions League altogether next season. They will forfeit up to £18m if they fail to overhaul Fiorentina in the next few weeks and face being out of pocket by almost twice as much if they finish outside the Barclays Premier League's top four next May.

As an added concern, such a nightmare scenario would also cast doubt over the futures of key players such as Fernando Torres, Reina, Javier Mascherano and even Steven Gerrard. Torres, Reina and Mascherano all see the Champions League as an essential showcase for their talents, while Gerrard would be just as dismayed, even if he is unlikely to turn his back on his home club, at this late stage, after twice pulling out of moves to Chelsea.

A return of one win from eight games has surely put paid to Liverpool's title hopes, but Reina was just as perturbed by the way they have been left lagging five points behind Fiorentina in Group E, with just two games to go.

But he argued: 'We can handle the pressure. We can trust in ourselves, and we will turn this situation around - I am sure of that.' Ronnie Whelan blamed Benitez's transfer dealings for Liverpool's plight.

'I don't doubt Benitez's passion for Liverpool or his hunger to win for the fans, but his judgement in the transfer market has been awful and that's why the Kop will be watching Europa Cup games before too long,' said the former Liverpool midfielder.

Ex-Liverpool skipper Graeme Souness said: 'If Rafa had been at any other big club - Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United - he would not still be manager, because their supporters are not like Liverpool's. Liverpool fans are a bit more patient.'

Two things

1) Souness is talking balls. How long has Wenger gone without winning a trophy? 6 years now? Longer than Rafa anyway. How long did Ferguson go before winning a trophy at the start of his tenure? 6 years was it.

2) Reina's 'spade a spade' attitude is fantastic.

Souey's ability to forget his own appalling record in the transfer market and his moans and groans about injury 'epidemics' AND his pleas for more time and patience is absolutely amazing. As for Whelan, well, yet again, the former Southend manager is making a strong bid to become the new Ian St John.

I'll believe it when I see it but a few things.

1) Why not do this over the summer, idiots. You withheld 20M only to now be worrying about losing a similar amount and far more on top of that. Penny wise pound foolish.
2) We have issues with 2 owners, we'd better not end up with 3.
3) If we are going to spend massive money, the priority should be a stadium, the rest being only whatever is necessary to fix our immediate issues.

strange - 100 million for 30% would mean they value the entire club at under 350 million.

Correct.

This is the solution I've been advocating for a long time now. It's the best thing for the club right now.

However I'd be amazed if much of the £100m ended up in a transfer kitty.

If it meant starting the stadium or being able to look at other managerial options in Janurary if we don't turn things around by then it would be a win win.

I'd like to think it would get the stadium up and running and at the same time sort out our balance sheet so we can borrow a bit to cover the rest of the stadium

Ideal world yes. But reality will probably be to just balance the books and see if we can get into the top 4 again next season.

I know this is fantasic coming from the man who ended 20 years of domination with signings such as Mark Walters, Julian Dicks, Paul Stewart and a record smashing fee for Dean fucking Saunders.

He should shut the fuck up he never brought in any players of the quality of Torres, Reina or Masherano in his days. Im struggling to think of a good Souness signing.

You give 100mil to Rafael and he will still say its not enough. Typical Rafael.

Something must have happened between you and Rafael because you used to love this man, and gush about him for 5 years. What did he do to you?

Glock lacks basic reading comprehension.

You give - no you don't, nothing has happened yet, it's a single story
100M to Rafael - there's no suggestion of that in the story you didn't read, that's the money that would be raised, which would go to the stadium as well, according to the story you didn't read.
Typical Glock.

Glock, I never get tired of this one, would you care to comment this time?

"Lucas has the potential to be a world class player. If given the chance consistently he could be a better player than Alonso because he has they eye to make killer passes to strikers."

If Lucas's biggest fan here (Ryan) didn't go that far ... Tell me Glock didn't REALLY say that ...

It'll end up in Tom and Georges back pocket mate. The cunts. Why do this now for fuck's sake ? If EVER there was a time to really invest in the team in was in the summer after last years performance but we didn't we weakened the squad. Gillette and Hicks have no interest in this club whatsoever other than securing profit from it. Rafa will see nothing of any new investment.

No, they know they fucked up big time in the summer , they took as big a gamble as big as Rafa did and it's all turning to poo.
They really can't afford not to put money in in January to save their investment going down the tubes. If we get bombed out of the CL, as is likely, and do not finish in the top four which is looking just as likely the value of the club is going to plummet.
Their real problem now is that even if they do make funds available, it could all still be too late and they are throwing good money away, but they will see there is no real option, they have to do it. I would not be surprised if they even funded from their own pockets if there were delays, such is the gravity of the situation.
The maths don't quite add up in the article either, it says that they would be prepared to give up 35% each which makes 70% to a new investor, if we are talking those figures, they will be looking at a sum bigger than £100m.
I hope Christian Purslow knows what he is doing as if you ask me he is going to be the key figure in all this.

regards

Yeah thats why you got far too long Graeme

VQ, it says they are willing to reduce their holdings to 35% each, so each selling off 15% of their shares. The potential investor will then own 30%. But under ownership rules (as we are seeing with Kronke at Arsenal), once you own 30% are you not obliged to attempt a take over and buy out the remaining shareholders?

I cannot understand why they would move to do this now instead of in the summer. Even the most wasteful of managers would struggle to spend £100 million in a January transfer window. The only players available are shite or have been stirring trouble.

More made up press speculation me thinks.
