Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Sterling has long been held in the highest regard at Anfield, but the cat was let out of the bag on Monday as the 16-year-old helped himself to five goals in the 9-0 demolition of Southend in the FA Youth Cup.

Facing Southend's kids is poles apart from a trip to Prague, but manager Kenny Dalglish clearly feels Sterling is ready for the step up to senior football.

Dalglish made it clear when he returned to the club that he wanted to invest time in the youth programme and he swiftly handed Sterling a spot in the A list of Liverpool's Europa League squad.

UEFA rules would normally prevent Sterling from travelling on account of it interfering with his education but he is on half term break and free to travel.

Wow, that bolded sentence really puts his age in perspective. Will he have to finish his homework after the match?

Surely there's enough time for the term break? Can't see how he can get down to it if he indeed gets to break the LFC record. 😛

Ha, and Sterling really had Lady Luck smiling upon him, didn't he? Seeing the half term break from school made it possible for him to travel.

The thing is, Suso was being asked to play a much more disciplined role than he shines in. He is best operating in a line along the centre of the pitch, rather than operating on the flanks. Absolutely right he learns to play in such positions, but he was never going to truly sparkle there.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

I'm pretty sure Kenny knows all about Suso and his time will come. I think this is more a PR exercise for the youth players in showing them the link to the first team. However, I would be amazed if this is anything other than just an opportunity to travel with the first team squad.

Suso doesn't yet count as a homegrown player so that is probably the reason he isn't in the squad.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

I hope he doesn't end up being stuck on the wing permanently. It's positively unreal how often that happens in English football to talented players who don't fit easily into some prearranged system.

Just checked we need to have 8 homegrown players in our squad so that would definitely seem to be the reason why these guys have been included especially if Cole and Stevie are still out. Who do we have in the first team squad that qualify as homegrown and are not injured? Gulacsi, Johnson, Pacheco, Carra, Kelly? Anyone else?

Was still probably named in the squad before the injury though.

Still pissed off that he's done for the season. 🙁

But I think we can fill the squad with youngsters in case of injuries but still have to fill the homegrown requirements?

Oh yeah forgot, was so intent on finding HG players that I somehow ignored the injured criteria.
Spearing is on his way back though.

Tom Ince.

Jones.

suso is going to find it difficult to break into the first team if he is truly an attacking midfielder (playing through the middle) or a second striker but he is certainly one of the most talented I've ever seen in the reserves so if anyone can make it happen it's him. think how difficult cesc would have found it to break into the first team if gerrard played for arsenal

Has been 3rd choice since returning from Asia cup.
I guess Dalglish thought that buying a new keeper was unnecessary. He'll probably be sold in the summer.

Yes, and Merieles and we nearly added Charlie Adam to that list. That said, he will make it. He's far too good not to.

If I were suso I would definately attempt to learn to play right across the line, if he has to come of the flank like a ljunburg/houghton to fill his boots through the middle then so be it because the competition through the middle will be fierce.

Great news if true.

Liverpool boy-wonder Raheem Sterling is being given a dream ticket to join Kenny Dalglish’s Europa League squad – at the tender age of 16.

The teenage sensation has been rewarded for a stunning five-goal display in the FA Youth Cup with a place on the plane for tomorrow’s tie at Sparta Prague.

Attacking midfielder Sterling could be on the bench, and if he came on he would become the youngest player to ever appear for Liverpool.

The record is held by defender Jack Robinson, who made his debut at 16 years and 250 days against Hull last May.
Sterling will be just 16 years and 79 days old tomorrow.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Youth team striker Raheem Sterling could become Liverpool's youngest first team player should he feature against Sparta Prague on Thursday.
Sterling, who turned 16 in December and is on half-term holidays from school, was a surprise inclusion in the Europa League squad for the last-32 tie.
Aged 16 years and 71 days, he would break the record set last May by under-18 team-mate Jack Robinson.
Sterling scored five goals in Monday's 9-0 FA Youth Cup victory over Southend.
The Jamaica-born England youth international, who attends Rainhill High School in Prescot, has made considerable progress at the Liverpool's Kirkby academy since joining the Anfield club last February from Championship side Queens Park Rangers.
He came off the bench in a pre-season friendly against Borussia Moenchengladbach, and last month was officially given a first-team squad number.
Sterling is one of a number of youngsters in the squad, with John Flanagan, Conor Coady, Robinson and Tom Ince all included.
Manager Kenny Dalglish told Liverpool's official website: "The lads were all going. Most of them were going anyway.
"There's nothing any of the boys did on Monday night [in the Youth Cup] that surprised us."
Captain Steven Gerrard and defender Daniel Agger have not travelled having not recovered from the injuries that kept them out of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Wigan.
Midfielders Joe Cole and Raul Meireles are included.
Liverpool's £35m club record-signing Andy Carroll has gone with the squad to Prague, but will only train as he is still recovering from a thigh problem.
"He won't be considered for the game but will travel just to get in and amongst the lads," added Dalglish. "It'll help him to feel a part of it."

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

If we're up 2-0 with 5 minutes left, I think it would do wonders for Sterling's confidence to be given a run out ... It would also signal loud and clear to the youngsters that if you perform and impress, chances will come.
